The past tells the future...

I've said it before, there are going to be some disappointed people on MR for a long time. There won't be a 4" iPhone, and there won't be a 7.85" iPad. Apple doesn't build the size they think is best and go with it, they build it in all kinds of sizes. Before we ever saw the iPad, I'm sure there were people testing out 7", 8", 9", 10", etc prototypes and the decision was made that a 3.5" screen on the iPhone and a 9.7" screen on the iPad were the optimal choices.

It amazes me how many people buy Apple these days but don't get the "Think Different" part. If you want the fastest processor and the fastest video card and fastest blah blah blah, Apple has never been shy about telling you to go else where. If you want different sized screens than Apple produces, feel free to buy something else. Those of us who have been with Apple prior to the iPhone, know they don't care about market share. its not their business model to compete with everything in the market. If you want to make a cheap tablet, great, more people will get into tablets, and then those people will eventually realize they have a lesser device and upgrade to the iPad. And they don't just give less options to frustrate those of you that are absolutely convinced that your iPad 2 is just too big and heavy (maybe we could fill it with helium and it could just float around), its to keep their production streamlined and their profits high.

You have to remember that the guy who founded this company when asked if he did any focus groups said that the customer doesn't know what they want until I give it to them. That should be very telling of the values of this company. Its also why people say Apple fans are drinking the kool aide, because we take what they give us and usually love it. What they don't realize is we still have free will, its just what we are being offered is an overall superior user experience (and a sexier one!).

So bottoms up Apple fans!

What bothers me the most is how many people decide not to be frugal consumers and fall into mindless loyalty or corpo-sycophancy.
I'm finding the tendency of hate-based purchasing even more alarming. Buying something because you hate the other.

There's also a problem with perception. Sure, I can look at the comments on the Steve Jobs biography on an Android store and see pages and pages of hate speech upon a recently deceased person, but I know that's a vocal minority. Also, some see the profit Apple is making and view those who buy those products as wasting money, when, in reality, the same person who buys Apple products can look overly frugal in other areas of their life. In fact, that's how they can afford it, sometimes.

It is still alarming to see people just knee-jerk react to stuff they know little to nothing about as if it's a sports game or something. Especially when it comes to the way they are spending their own money or politics or major ethical issues. Problem is that issues where there are disagreements make great sensational stories, and when you BOIL them down to sound bytes that people will pay attention to there is not much time given to understanding.

Less is less.

huh??? They've been selling an average of 1mm a week for the past few weeks... sure sounds like a massive disappointment to me:rolleyes:

Well as long as you have a few weeks of sales numbers to back it up, I'm sure its ok to call it a rousing success....

Exactly why the iPod, iPhone, iPad launched the way they did. But then refinement comes and there is a mix of the surprises with the user feedback and market reactions. That's what an 8" iPad would be if it were to launch that way.

I'm thinking these rumors of the screen size have been corroborated enough that there is _some_ device from Apple that is going to use it. I'm hoping Apple has an angle on it that is more interesting than just a smaller iPad, but I don't think anything said or done by Apple in the past precludes it.

How very refreshing. I must admit that I am very frugal in other areas except when it comes to computer hardware. I am heavily, unwillingly now invested in Apple's product feedback system but I do not want to succumb to it anymore and to be honest none of their new products interest me.

I do have a new found liking of Google just due to the platform agnostic nature of their products. All you really need is a web browser and an internet connection. I've mentioned this before but if I find a toaster with a decent web browser, I will be using my toaster. Still I have my usual wariness about Google, just like other corporations.

At this point while I do have a Samsung Gingerbread based phone I am strongly looking at the Windows Phone platform as well.

I am a fan of OS X but I am not so fond of Apple. To the point where they have even pushed me to look at Ubuntu/Mint. Google's services and DropBox work just as well regardless.

Id like to see bigger but dont think it will happen. A 13 or 14" model would be nice but i guess 9.7 is the one which fits the 'average user' best.

Its only been on sale for 10 weeks. Throughout that period, sales have good. What are you asking for really? Sales for a non-existing, non-unveiled device? Awesome. Question: How many iPhone 4S did Apple sell in June? 0!!? Oh my!

Microsoft were doing tablets. Pad follows from Weisers (and others) classification of devices. Also swings well with Pod. Not as clear-visioned as one may think at first sight in other words. Kudos, still.

By your logic the 4S is a flop b/c sales over weeks don't mean anything on a new product  . Kindle Fire will > the 7" range just like iPad's dominate in their range of 10" give or take. Another reason why Kindle Fires will continue selling well, not only is it a better all around product then others in it's range, Amazon's cloud system is fairly slick, all the Prime benefits like thousands of free streaming movies etc... but more importantly they have the backing of Amazon's excellent PR team. PR run's the show ;)

lol... it's ok, some just drink a bit too much of the Apple Koolaid.... I own plenty of Apple products, but I don't drink the koolaid. I like having an open mind lol

Every creative professional I know that has an iPad loves it, it's potential, but has at some point expressed the same thing. A full size iPad for drawing and design would be completely awesome to use in the office, and invite more and more serious design & illusation apps, changing the way industries work.

Sure would be great to have a consumer/consumption model for the punters, and a big boy model for creative pros.

I've often thought an 'iPad Pro' running proper OSX would be great for creative pros. It could replace an iMac if it came with a docking station and keyboard. I'd buy one!

With regard to a 7.85in (why not just say 200mm?) iPad, that would be too small for me. I'd rather see a slightly larger A4 screen that would be perfect for reading magazines on.

PS. tell me no one's sad enough to print out that PDF! :)

From the news report above:

"However he [SJ] does see potential to use small device to drive a TV as the presentation vehicle."

I call "iPad" [tablet device] !!:)

I read that, super neat. What's more amusing is some of the other posts in that thread, particularly the ones going on and on about how Apple would NEVER make a phone. Shows how much we know, and puts some things in perspective. We should all take things with a little grain of salt and a big dose of perspective. The tech world changes fast and you never know quite what a company is going to do next, even when you think you have them all figured out (as so many people think they do with Apple).

I've owned the first iPad and the iPad 2 and I've sold both a few weeks later. I want to like the device but it does seem a bit to big in my hands (i even have big hands). I think a smaller device would be perfect for me. I've been playing with smaller devices in stores (like the kindle fire) and they seem to be right around the ball park.

......that's actually exactly what they are doing, and it's been brought up in countless tech blogs before.
they are selling the hardware at a loss, to recoup the losses in sales of content, because amazon is at the end of the day, a content distributor not a hardware company.

nothing unsubstantiated about that.

that's a pretty biased/unsubstantiated comment considering that much of Amazon's music and book prices are below Apple's.

I'm just going to enjoy watching the many Apple fans who post again and again that Apple won't make a smaller tablet as Steve said so, gradually change their mind around (as per normal) if/when Apple does release a smaller model.

It's funny to watch it happen :D

Well, Apple already does sell an iPod Touch which could be considered a mini-tablet and nobody is sticking their fingers into a pencil sharpener to use it. I wouldn't mind seeing an iPod Touch with a 4.5 inch display to watch videos, but I don't quite expect that, either. I don't see why Apple wouldn't build a 7.85 inch tablet if there proves to be high demand for such a size, but it would somewhat muddle their product line as far as pricing is concerned.

you should perhaps quote the article, not me quoting the article, because it appears that *im* the idiot that is saying they need to compete with Amazon.

i was quoting the article.

Compete against a device that they've already far outclassed? We don't even know how many of these Amazon actually sold and what % share they have. The Kindle Fire has been a massive disappointment.

Anybody who thinks the iPad needs to compete with the Kindle Fire has probably never used either device.

Apples and Oranges. Pun intended.

Plus most of the reviews for the fire were terrible. I love the regular kindle. I think for what it does it is far wide better than every other option out there. E-ink is an incredible thing and I hope to see it featured more in the future. It is in my opinion, the best way to read a book for those of us who like to travel light and read in the dark.

The fire on the other hand is what is trying to compete with the iPad. And it didn't do a good job. I have nothing against amazon, in fact I buy stuff from them all the time. But the fire was a stupid idea and a failed attempt to catch up to the iPad. Amazon COULD build an iPad competitor, but they missed the mark with the fire.

I'm not against a 7 inch iPad- I would probably even buy one if the specs were as good or better than the iPad 2. If Apple launched one tomorrow it would do better than the fire simply because the fire kinda sucks. Just my two cents.

Someone will build an iPad killer some day but right now, there is no competition. Don't ask me how, but the competition against the iPhone somehow did not translate to the tablet market. Every tablet I have used has the same insanely crappy can't believe it made it to market style response to touch. You tap the screen and then have to guess whether or not it registered, you go to re-tap just as the first tap is registering. Kind of frustrating.
