Well, it means now you have double the amount of space to write on.
You actually don't since the sheets are together and you just have the front of one and the back of the other. However, that's fairly moot when it comes to what that was in relation to.

That's really not much bigger than my first smartphone. Although that had a full slide out keyboard and a tilting screen. Still, it's not an unreasonable size.

We wouldn’t be having this discussion if smartphones began using removable batteries where you can swap out a dead battery with a fully charged spare.

Began?
You mean go back to using removable batteries. Apart from Apple, removable batteries were the norm.

Not much of a phone. You might as well grab a brick, paint it blue and and duct tape a phone to it. Then you will be able to recreate this beta designed phone and save yourself $682 dollars. Said device is good for protection as well. Should you be the victim of an attempted robbery etc., slam the perp in the head with your trusty phone brick., until the logo of the phone is imprinted on his forehead.

I bet ya it will sell more than those ridiculous $2000 foldable plastic screen abominations from Samsung and Huawei.

It’s too early for April Fools! Lol. This thing is ridiculous! Seriously? Who would actually buy this? A regular phone with a battery case is thinner than this. Kinda silly really. It’s not even waterproof or shockproof, so you’d still have to get a case for it which would make it even thicker. I don’t think this is what people meant when they said that iphones are getting too thin. Plus with a lithium battery this big, I feel sorry for the person that has one of these explode in their pocket. Yikes.

I see a use case in the data acquisition industry with remote field operations.
Battery pack and cable are just things to lose.

I can't see this for everyday use.

It's so amusing when companies design products and then leave out critical features that would actually make it a viable product. Maybe there is something we don't know about this phone that makes it a product someone would actually want (like, is is bundled with a ruggedized case?) If it was ruggedized then it would make perfect sense for backpackers, adventure enthusiasts, extreme skiers, etc. But as it stands, this serves no real-world purpose I can imagine (Maybe people who just don't want to get up out of their chair to charge their phone more than once a week?)

Is this device geared towards people in service? (ups delivery guy, warehouse/backhouse, military, waitress)
