Other This years screen lottery (17, 17 pro, 17 pro max and air)

Is it opening in Preview? My default was Readdle’s Documents app (why can’t we set the default text app yet?) You just need to tap share then save to files wherever the option is.
Maybe it’s not even doing the sysdiagnose right cause when I click all three buttons all I get is a screenshot or the prompt to turn iPhone off. Not sure if I’m doing something wrong when clicking all 3 buttons at the same time.

Posted in another thread but for the sake of this thread:

We just got two 17 base models to replace 15 Pros. My wife’s screen is perfect but I do have the green when tilting. I was at a carrier store completing a trade and an Apple Store yesterday picking up a watch band and a lot (maybe most?) the 17 models (Air, Pro, regular) exhibited this.

Given that it’s only prevalent when tilting top toward me and the other units I observed, not sure I have the patience to play the screen lottery game. I’ve already forgotten about it.

I am considering going without the screen protector. I installed one after I got the phone, but seeing the JerryRigEverything video and wanting to benefit more from the anti reflective, I don’t have a great reason to use one.

Really hope folks don’t get too hung up on this stuff. My 17 Pro is the “best” Samsung but the Air and 17 units I have are GVC and they’re perfectly nice — and I’ve been OCD about displays in the past if part of the panel seemed too warm, etc.

Is there a green tint on the bottom half of the GVC phones if I tilt that part away from me? Sure, but in what scenario would that ever matter in real-world use?

I agree, both screens can be good, the problem is difference, people will compare and have preferences, If apple want consistency in the future, the idea of having multiple manufacturers will never solve the issue.

What made me actually like and use my 15pro in the past was not using a screen protector, people get peaky about quality, just to end up ruin it with another glass layer on top. :)

My 17 Pro has G9N = Samsung. Purchased from Apple UK.

Currently no eye strain…..

Display shifts to what I think is a cool light blue (maybe a little green) when tilted. I’ve always seen colour shift on OLED devices when viewed outside of a normal angle.

I have an even white that’s a little yellow/red which I considered a normal warm colour for a OLED, and I’m coming from a cool blue LCD on my iPhone 11.

Not seeing any yellow splotches that I normally see when I struggle to focus on previous OLED iPhones - I’m PWM sensitive.

So I am aware that LG has had this history of having a green tint on your screen when you tilt the top towards you. I have the same issue with my base iPhone 17. While reading the posts here, I checked again. It seemed like I had very a bad case but it wasn't the case when I initially checked. I removed the screen protector and checked again - apparently my screen protector was really amplifying it.

I just noticed my GVC screen (17 pro max) is also, besides the green colour (not only when tilting), less sharp than my 13 pro max. Letters but also faces are less sharp and have softer / blurry lines.

Its ridiculous that my 4 year old iPhone 13 pro max with multiple 1000s of hours of screen time has a better screen.

Sending this one back and give it one more try. If the new one sucks too I'm switching back to my 13 pro max.

my screen on 17 pro max completely died, powered on phone and started setup process. Had to leave device and go do something. when i came back black screen. Didnt even activate the phone. Attempted dfu restore but nothing just black screen

Two iPhones here both GVC panels. Did white point measurements and they are both bang on ~6500k all around. That is only one metric of course, but still good to see they have calibrated it well

Do you get the slight green color at the bottom when tilting the top of the phone towards you?

Even though posted in '16pro brightness' thread I guess good to have a distinct thread for the 17 series

256gb Blue Air - GVC: LG. No Multi tint, no off axis green or red but not really brighter than my Samsung 16+ in any conditions bit underwhelmed there, and as is typical of LG panels the brightness was quite a bit dimmer viewing off to the side. Returned because I couldn't get on with the Air but the screen was pretty good compared to what's out there... Brightness concerns aside.

256gb Blue 17 Pro - G9N: Samsung. Beautiful, appreciably brighter than 16+ and crisper (as I hoped for / expected upfront), brightness retained off axis, and no off axis green or red either.
Makes my 16+ look red biased straight on by comparison and I was really happy with that panel.

Happy iPhone hunting!

I'm not sure why checking the screen manufacturer is important. All this creating, unpacking, reading diag files ...

If your screen looks good to you - great! If it looks faulty (green tint or whatever), return the phone.

Otherwise what - screen looks great but don't like the manufacturer so you'll swap it, or screen has a fault but you like the manufacturer so you'll keep it?

Without seeing them in person - no idea. Taking a video of a screen doesn't show colours accurately, as the phone taking the video keeps messing around with the white balance especially as the video camera kept moving around.

I mean if you had to pick one. I get your point but in case if you only had this video to pick one from.

These both look pretty decent from what I can see, but the video is pretty limiting.
Photos of them both straight on would be a much better indicator in this case.

Uniformly shifts tint on both models which is a relief.. instead of a green blob at the bottom.

Personally I wouldn't get too hung up on Samsung or LG specifically, there are definitely bad Samsung out there and good LG a well. It's truly a lottery in all directions.

That said, I prefer a good Samsung over a good LG but I don't work at the assembly line :p I've gotten on fine with my LG 13 mini that doesn't have green tint and you very well could be abandoning a good LG for an atrocious Samsung for example. From what I see very briefly at the straight on portion of the video, Pro looks cleaner and less tint biased.. I think?

If you really wanna know which is which just for science, run the diagnostics in OP and report back.

My bet is the PM is Samsung and Pro is LG: PM has a red bias looks like which is typical of Samsung and Pro has a dimmer off axis brightness which is typical of LG.

But also, perhaps more importantly, I would pick the phone you want and then look for a good one if you aren't happy rather than letting which display you got dictate which model you get. In the end, you'll be happier. Unless you're truly indifferent to Pro or Pro Max.

What are your initial thoughts?

Revisiting this since I had no idea there were variations in panels. Comparing my 15PM which has the Samsung and my 17PM which has the LG — the LG appears a little dimmer than the Samsung below 50% brightness. If I turn them all the way up, the LG is brighter and more vibrant than the Samsung. And if it’s around 50% and up, the brightness is almost equal.

I noticed this as well. My 15P is G9N and 17PM is G3H. Easier to adjust for use in the dark but I think PWM affects me more with the LG panel.
