Every iPhone I’ve bought since the 12 pro max has been dimmer out the box as compared to my existing device.
True, noticed this as well and thought it was a LG screen issue. Now the 17PM LG screen is brighter than the 17P Samsung screen. Definitely keeping this 17PM and returning the 17P. Gotta stop going down this rabbit hole at some point, now I can't stop seeing the pink tints on all my Samsung screens...

If you think your substandard faulty dull non-trendy LG GVC screen looks poor, install pixel control and do the coloured stripes. Looks fantastic and bright and colours look amazing. You’re welcome. Trust your eyes, not internet strangers.

Just ordered 2 pro maxes to test further. I’ll keep the best one. I currently have a LG screen with the green tilt. For the rest is quite good. White, uniform and bright but want to see if i can get one with those and no green shift.
One thing I didn’t like is I had to buy from a retailer instead of apple store like my first. Always preferred that for warranty reasons.
Anyway this is my first and last test. I’m not gonna keep doing it.

Noticed my launch day Air had pretty noticeable black crush during dark scenes in content, did the Lagom contrast test card (attached) and found it failed to display all but one of the top row and returned it.

New unit is great, no off-axis green tint and perfect grey scale displaying full detail in shadow areas.

Has anyone else noticed this issue?

My experiences:

16 Pro Max, GH3 panel: perfect screen, uniform, no off-axis tinting
1st 17 Pro Max, GVC panel: screen not great but ok, visibly worse than the 16PM, uniform, slight off-axis tinting
2nd 17 Pro Max, GVC panel: awful screen, bad off-axis tinting, much much worse than the 16PM

My conclusion from these statistically irrelevant samples:
(1) LG screens can be perfect (at least 2024)
(2) huge variations among GVC-panels

In addition to the display problems, the 1st 17PM has a back glass that is not aligned with the aluminium frame, you can easily feel it when holding the phone. So I am going to return both 17PM and keep using my 16PM. Not going to invest almost 2k€ for a phone with a screen that is inferior to the screen of my current 16PM. Maybe I try again in a couple of weeks.

Frustrated. Would have loved the new tele camera, among other things 🥺

When I bought my 16 Pro I knew about OLED lottery and different manufacturers but I didn’t want to try to see any tints or shifts of color or display panel code.

I’m getting 17 Pro Max soon and I don’t even want to think about all of that again. I’ve just checked my 16 Pro and of course it has green tint and the bottom of the screen when tilted top part of the phone towards me.

I think most of you haven’t seen really low-end OLED panels of cheap phones.
Here’s for example my old Google Pixel 6a which I used whole year and it has crazy rainbow disco-party 🕺 🪩 going on when looking at any angle.

With a perfect 16PM, might also consider skipping the 17PM altogether and wait for the 18PM in ~11 months.

I’m at Best Buy and holy ****, my screen on my 17 Pro (G9P) looks horrible compared to the 17 Pro units on the floor with True Tone and everything else turned off!

Currently in the process of exchanging it right now for a new 17 Pro 512GB unit, wish me luck.

Here is my story.
Purchased a pro max at launch from online apple store. After 2 days I noticed the typical green shift at the bottom when tilting towards you. For the rest it was quite good: uniform and bright.
However this green shift bothered me, especially as I still my 15pm and that screen was better so I felt I downgraded even though if I would have never read this post I probably would have thought all screens were like this or never noticed.

Anyway stock is very low atm, so 2 days ago I noticed a retailer here having them in stock. I prefer to buy from Apple, but they could only deliver in 2 more weeks and the return window of my first iPhone was nearly up. So i bought 2 PM from that retailer.
I opened the first one and quickly noticed no green shift. Also bright and uniform. Although I was already satisfied with this one I opened up the second one. Again a very nice screen.
Even maybe a tad bitter. In terms of color vibrance is was slightly better, bit very minimal. Same uniformity, no shift.
I did the panel check and both were samsung G9N, my first one with the green shift was LG GVC.

One thing the LG did better was having a cooler white which i personally prefer. The samsungs were bit warmer and much more when true tone was on. There was also a noticable difference between the 2 samsung screens with true tone enabled. One was warmer. Without it not much difference. This surprised me as it seems the signal the screen receives from the toggle is more severe, as I thought both would look the same like they did with true tone off.

In the end I decided to go with the last iPhone tested, but right as I was suppose to factory reset the first one I looked at all the other parts to see if it was ok. And then I noticed a tiny speck of dust below the camera lens. Kinda bummed. I had found the absolutely perfect screen and then this. Wasn’t noticable in photo’s. A google search showed this can happen and has no real effect on photo’s but I know myself, this would bother me.
So I kept the first one I opened as that screen was 95% the same as the camera dust one.

Below the 2 samsung screens. I kept the right one. In reality they looked the same except for a tiny amount of cooler white / vibrance. The black stripes is just on the photo.
