Pencil worked pretty well when I tried it at Apple store but being able to use it, latency and palm rejection vary per app. Issues I see are for $99 Apple should've made it metal to match the iPP instead of plastic, it's too long for many shoulder/messenger bags, short ~4 day battery life, lacks eraser end and functional button(s).

IMHO the quick charging makes the 4 day battery life less of an issue.

I'd rather have a longer charge time with longer life per charge. The Surface Pro 4 pen supposedly lasts up to a year but I'd be happy with at least a month. ~4 day is way too short.

I just tried the Apple Pencil today and I am STUNNED by how good it is. I am an amateur/hobbyist illustrator, comic artist and and animator and I've never truly had a stylus that I loved. I've had a Wacom Intuos 3, Intuos 4 and even a Cintiq 12" and nothing comes close to the lag-free feeling the Apple pencil has. Shading also feels so natural and my 4 year old son was nearly as wowed as I was. Drawing, sketching and note taking felt flawless. The only thing Apple did wrong: not making them available after months of anticipation. This is the KILLER drawing tool (and yes it feels much nicer to me than the Surface Pen...).

I'm curious, did you only try out the Apple Pencil within Apple's own Notes app, or did you try out other apps? The reason I ask is because the notes app has virtually no lag and feels very realistic, but if you use paper 53 or some other apps then you'll notice that there's more lag when using that app. While Apple's notes app works very well, I can't see myself using it very much since there aren't brush or color settings for much flexibility.

I've also noticed how little lag there is when using the notes app with even just a normal stylus. So I feel that the lag-freeness is attributed more to apple's screen improvements as well as the notes app itself.

Procreate seems to have similar latency to Notes, and it has an impressively powerful brush engine for a mobile app. I can't understand why this isn't on the demo machines unless Adobe is keeping it off (it kind of makes their paint apps look bad by comparison).

Nope for any backward compatibility. It's a blend of the Pencil and the screen (digitizer) technology that allows Pencil to work that way. I'm hoping for an Air 3 with Pencil support for that sweet spot of pressure sensitive fine-tipped stylus plus portability. :)
Ah..you should be able to use pencil with air 2...it's just that you won't be able to certain features for iPad pro.

Why would it? No previous iPad has any stylus technology. Available stylli simply mimic a fingertip.

Maybe someone who has received their pencil can give it a try so these rumors stop?

Read my previous post. I don't have air 2...just pro. move on.

If apple made it backwards compatible, how would they upsell people who want to have access to the pencil?

Let's just ignore the fact that it's technically impossible, right? This is like suggesting that N-trig pens should work on any capacitive touch digitizer. That's not how active capacitive systems work.

Yes, but in this case it is a device you have to pair using your lignting port. So guess who decides if the OS will allow it to pair?

Even if it paired or wouldn't work. The tip is too small for the old iPad display to detect.

You do not understand the technology. The capacitive digitizer -- the component of the screen stack which measures voltage changes in a capacitor grid -- of the older devices will not correctly read the signal from an active powered stylus because it is only designed for passive finger tracking. BT is used only to transmit the pressure and tilt data. Even if the Pencil were allowed to pair with older devices the digitizer would not be able to track its position.

I am saying EVEN IF IT WOULD WORK, apple wouldn't allow it to work on older devices because they would want to up sell the customer... This is one of the big selling feaures of the Pro.

I NEVER once said it would work on older devices... You are spending time pointing out something I already know...

Any estimate/guesses when iPad Air 3 will come out? I was guessing last Keynote but nope.

Let me peer into my magic 8 ball ;-) Seriously though, I bought the retina iPad 3 and six months later the 4 came out. Ugh! Almost seems like they're putting the iPad Airs on a two-year cycle now though, since it didn't get an update this year. I'd guess next fall Sept/Oct.

The big question is whether or not they'll hold the Pencil capability only on the "Pro" models or make it available for everyone. I'm pretty sure I'll keep my Pro through next year since the screen size is gorgeous for drawing at home, but I'd leap on next year's Air as well if it would also support the Pencil.
