I know most apple fans will do almost everything to protect whatever comes out of the apple brand.
Just face that for example samsung and nokia have major plants in their homelands and suceed to beat apple when it comes to quality.
For example my nokia n9 is made in Finland and has superior quality compared to iphone. Samsung make big profits without sending their production to china.

it is possible to stay in america, apple just want to maximise their profit.

Sad but true story, especially with the current economy.

That would be great for US workers (assuming Apple could find tens of thousands of workers who'd be willing to do that work); but terrible for the tens of thousands of Chinese who needed those jobs.

Would that be better, or worse than the current situation?

If these companies are making superior quality for the price, then how would it be profit-maximizing for Apple? They would be forced to move their factories.

Some amusing comments on here - let me enlighten a few folks about the reality of Foxconn and the working conditions in China (particularly on Apple lines).

Firstly, Shenzhen, they work 12 hour shifts with 2 breaks, there is food places around all the factory areas. I've often walked down the line and seen workers half a sleep hand on cheek waiting for the next item come down the line. Then other times they are a hive of activity, however there is no supervisors beating people or forcing them to work. Manufacturing shop floors conditions I've seen in other manufacturers in both in China and outside are not much different.

Foxconn in particular recruits 18-30 year old, yes they put up the suicide nets at the Shenzhen site. One thing people really need to understand is that the Apple production lines are run differently to the other company lines (Sony, Microsoft, Dell etc) that are built there. The majority of the suicides were from non-Apple production floors. As has been widely reported the level of suicides in the amount of 18-30 population at the site is lower than the national average.

Chengdu, they changed the 2 x 12 hours shifts to 3 x 8 hour shifts because the local population refuse to do 12 hour shifts. The vast majority of the production staff live local and bus services are provided for staff (packed they may well be but at bus they are). The iPad should by now be exclusively built here after moving from the Shenzhen, Long Hua plant.

Zhengzhou, the place has been operational for best part of a year already. However it's not running at full capacity the target capacity for the place is 1 million (yes 1 million) iPhone per day - staggering figures but target figures only. However the size of the factory and accommodation areas are quite literally the size of a small city.

Foxconn are focusing to move all the production of iPhones away from Shenzhen, Guan Lan plant to the Zhengzhou plant - tax reason and large proportion of the employees in Shenzhen are from the Hunan region (Zhengzhou) anyway.

In the meantime Foxconn Brazil will be producing both iPhones and iPads for the local market . .. .

Dude knows his stuff

Apple made their choice, im not saying that they will earn more by moving back.

Upsetting

I've been an Apple supporter since 1995 and I'm a stockholder.

I'm actually appalled that in the last two days the stock has gone up, after those horrible reports this past weekend.

I love my Apple products and I also love the profits, but I certainly don't want to gain anything or enjoy anything on anyone elses suffering.

I find this all very disturbing and Apple needs to sever itself from Foxconn. Foxconn should be sued or disbanded, or something.

So, if things are this bad, why are thousands lining up for jobs? Maybe there is more to the story than meets the eye?

And, are you in favor of putting all those people already working their out of work?

Dear Apple:

Ignore people saying you should build factories in the U.S. unless American workers and Anerica itself earns that privilege by being competitive.

Sincerely,

Capitalism

That way they can't make it to the roof and embarrass Apple hipsters
with their inconsiderate freefalls to the ground. Splat.

It's because it's one of only a few products that supply cannot meet demand with and Apple makes LUXURY items - no matter how you spin it, we can all live without iWhatevers.

Are human lives worth you having a white iPhone 4S? You tell me, then live with your conscience.

so I take it then that you don't have a cellphone, or a computer, or a tv, or sneakers, or...

please stop being a hypocrite. buying an iPhone does no more damage than any other product from china. it is virtually impossible to not buy products that are made in china...you can reduce it as much as possible, and if you do, then my hat is off to you. But you still buy chinese products, and nobody suffered to make my white iPhone 4S any more than they did for whatever cellphone you have.

To be honest, Apple products are the only things I purchase that are Chinese made. I go out of my way not to purchase anything made in China. Sometimes it's difficult, but it is possible.

I don't trust them. There have been too many instances where either animals or people have suffered due to their lack of morals.

My first choice is to buy American made, then I will look to other countries for the product I need.
