It's part of the cycle. I actually do not mind being forced to buy the latest hardware to get the latest software. It makes sense to me since it is a decision that the consumer still gets to make yet the cycle is there to feed the company to continue innovating.

But doesn't the iPod Touch 2G still work? Doesn't it still play music, hold photos, run apps, get mail, etc?

Do you seriously expect new software features to work on all versions of the hardware even if the hardware lacks the capability of using some features?

Out of curiosity, what major new features which actually involved CPU horsepower were added between 4.2.x and 4.3.x?

I think the general sentiment is simply the desire to understand why the 2nd generation iPod touch was worthy of 4.0.x, 4.1.x, and 4.2.x, but for some reason it wasn't worthy of 4.3.x.

On the other hand, what security vulnerabilities were announced as fixed in 4.3.x, which are now known to malicious hackers to potentially attack any devices which are still on 4.2.x?

From a security perspective, it could easily be argued that the 2nd generation iPod touch has, indeed, lost some of its functionality, due to the fact that iOS 4.3.x is available. Because now, there are well-known security flaws, publicized due to the announcement of iOS 4.3, which would make it unsafe for iOS 4.2.x users to continue doing the things they used to do, for fear of accidentally triggering one of those vulnerabilities.

[edit]
For the record, I do not own a 2nd generation iPod touch, and my 3rd generation iPod touch is supposed to continue being supported into at least the first few versions of iOS 5, so I don't have a horse in this race. But I completely sympathize with their situation.

Here's what it couldn't support in 4.3 and why:

AirPrint: The 2G can't support it becausing when in the middle of printing, the Print Center icon goes into the multitasking ray which can't be used on the 2G.

Safari Performance (Javascript Nitro engine): The processor in the 2G probably can't handle the performance boost in Safari.

There was a slew of fixes for the iPod touch 4 such as ways of giving a contact a picture by taking one with thge camera, a different facetime icon, etc. There was personal hotspot for iPhone 4. There were also some bug fixes, but most of them were tiny system tweaks rather than fixes.

AirPlay for 3rd party apps: The 2G was never given AirPlay support on the first place so adding it to 3rd party apps would be pointless.

Those were the main features in 4.3 and none of them could be supported by 4.3. It'd be stupid to just put out a bug fixes update as none of them were important enough. In addition, a small bug fix update to 4.3.x for the iPod touch 2g, would throw things off as all devices that could support the software wouldn't be on the same version. (4.2.x for 4.3.1 for 2G owners and plain old 4.3 for the other devices that could support every feature). I had a 2g before my 4g and I thought it was all dumb but if you think about it, you probably wouldn't want features that either A) can't be used (reasons given above) or B) would make the system laggy. All iPhone 3G owners know that feeling.

Thanks.

Technology Progresses

Folks, things progress. We evolve and so does technology.

Most things in life are not upgradable.

A new TV set, other than a minor firmware update stays the same. Your 2010 Lexus remains the same forever. Your washing machine? No updates there.

Nearly everything we buy does not contain free updates, especially if it is a consumable item or a durable good. You can buy after market parts for your car, you can upgrade your kitchen in your house, but those are not free nor included by the manufacturer.

A software system like an OS does release updates. In nearly all cases Apple does this as bug fixes andrefiniements. Rarely do new features get added along the way.

Apple does release new OS systems. These are either built into the original cost of the machine with 2 year deferred earnings or a purchased update. An OS update is paid. Be it Windows or Mac. Think every OS release for the Mac, all paid (yes, one was free but that was early on). iOS updates are free but it is clearly stated they are deferrered revenue, so they can legally account for this.

In addition, no company should limit itself to hurting its future capabilities in the name of updating past sales. That is a dead end way to conduct business.

My old iPod still does exactly what it was billed to due when purchased. If iOS 5 comes along and it cannot update I have lost nothing. I have a fully functional piece of hardware that does exactly what I paid for it to do.If by chance the last generation hardware can accept the new iOS, then its a nice bonus. Not every feature will be supported as it should be.

Consumer electronics is a cut throat business. The latest technology and specs are critical. I cannot imagine Apple holding off on a video camera just so the old 3G would not feel left out when the 3GS came out. It just doesn't work that way.

In technology terms, your second generation touch is ancient. Yet it still plays music and can still run many apps.

My 2009 car is not as feature rich as the 2012 model. Yet my car still does everything it did when I puchased it. I would not expect my car company to upgarde it free of charge. I can in fact trade it in and buy a new one if I fel the extar dollars are wisely spent. The same is true of your iPod. Sell it and upgrade or use it like an iPod and stop whining that it is not as fast, sleek, modern, etc. as the device around the corner.

All companies selling products must make improvements and make you want to upgrade else they would fail. If it doesn't wear out then all they have to entice you is new features and the sex appeal of new technologies.

Specifically to your generation device a lot of changed under the hood. I have a 3G that runs 4.2.x. It is dog slow comapred to my iPhone 4. The CPU capabilities are vast. technical specs between the 2 easily explain the difference. I would rather have a device that functions than a device that is maxed and pushed to near unusable.

You always have a choice. You can choose to stay the same, upgrade, not upgarde, buy a new one or not. But Apple owes you nothing for you past purchase other than what tehy state in warranty terms and initial product marketing.

Exactly. ^ It's not just Apple that does this with their products. Every company that is in the technology industry does it. Technology would be boring if we all still had, for example, the 1st iPhone, or the very first car. Seriously guys, get over it and stop complaining. Either deal with what you have or upgrade.

Agreed. There wouldn't be an iPhone or an iPod Touch without progress and innovation. We'd still be using Motorola StarTac's and Sony Walkmen/Discmen...

Although I might be a little angered at how my device is already outdated, think how happy you'll be when you have a brand new (at that time) device that can outperform your old one by ten fold.

Quit your whining OP. Own an Android phone then try and tell me Apple's not being fair.

Sorry to be blunt, but gosh. You really don't seem to know much. The fact that Apple updates the 3 latest generations of iDevices for iOS x is pretty freakin' amazing.

Get ready because even 4th generation iPod touch owners are about to be outdated in a month.

...

And enjoy all your iPad 2's because those two* will be outdated next year. *Pun intended

And have fun with all your fancy Macs because they'll be outdated next year.

And watch lots of that Apple TV because-yes, that will be outdated soon.

Treasure all those calls on those iPhone 4! Because they'll be less fun once its outdated in a month or so!

And... and... those iPods! They'll be outdated soon! Careful! Time is out to outdate all your fancy tech toys! No one is safe! Dont attempt to stop time! Because it is impossible!

Guess what! Your own skin and hair is becoming outdated slowly! Time is out to get us all! Everybody get inside a DeLorean! DX

NOOOOOOOOOO i like just got a ipt 4g

didnt even realize that my ipod was that old until i looked to see what gen it was today. but it doesn't bother me as mine spends %99 of the time in my glove compartment. i havent used it for anything else but that since i bought it.

Maybe I'm alone here, but I feel like the iPad 1 is already quite laggy, meaning, when I'm switching between full open apps with the screen gestures, the thing freezes for a half-second, when a highly detailed app is open, like the huffingtonpost, it takes a while to move within it. I doubt the iPad 1 will updated for much longer.

And in my view, that's insane. It speaks to apple underpowered hardware. The iPad 1 has had 256MB of ram since it was released much like the iPhone 3GS. I'm guessing that when iPhone 3GS is no longer updated, the iPad 1 will follow suit.

Not to mention half-assed updates. Jailbroken iPad 1 can do screen mirroring. However, the feature is only supported and promoted on iPad 2. Any iPhone 2G owners here who are still out of picture messages, video recording, etc?

Might wanna try a restore. the iPod touch 4g has the same amount of RAM and the same A4 chip and mine runs fast, no lagginess at all.

Half-assed updates? If you knew one tidbit about Apple, you'd know they would never add in a feature / software feature to a product if they didn't like the performance it provided. That's why the iPod touch 2g and iPhone 3g didn't get wallpapers or multitasking in 4.0 and believe them because my jailbroken iPod touch 2g had very laggy and slow animations when just exiting to the homescreen, etc. I know Apple would never want anyone to have that experience.

In addition, they want to give consumers reasons to buy the newer product and you proved it with that post. Maybe they feel screen mirroring will appeal to people with iPad 1's so it'll make them want the feature enough to get a newer iPad.

You're acting just like the OP did, andrewlgm. Just be thankful Apple is even providing iOS 5 to the original iPad. Either

Deal with it!

or buy a new product. Seriously.

The buyer of the iPhone 2G should be thankful that their relatively modern iPhone does not to this day record video when it is fully capable of doing so?

I am not per say an unhappy costumer. I love the iPad I own. But I find it "weird," "unexpected," "unsatisfactory," that a piece of tech I bought last year for an expensive price, $650, is already lagging when it comes to reading news. If you own an iPad 1, download the huffingtonpost app and give it a try.

And, no. I won't be buying another iOS device altogether. Buying an iOS device now means you'll be using it as is for the coming 1.5 year without any major software revision. And if there is one, you can bet the newest and best features will not be added to it. Either due its underpowered hardware or simply due to the company not choosing to add it.

They should be thankful it's not running laggy software that it really can't support. They should be aware that technology progresses very fast and that businesses need to make money to keep on going.

Are you saying you didn't think that Apple would release another iPad? Or that technology progresses to the point where older hardware will be improved via a product refresh cycle? What's so abnormal about that?

I must say that Huffington Post app is not the best example of lagginess as the application itself is not made very well. On the iPhone, it barely has three stars so I wouldn't use that as an example of hardware lagginess.

Apple will not include a major feature because either A) the hardware can't support it or B) they are saving it for a new piece of hardware / device. Take Photobooth as an example. I'd say that was a major software addition for the iPad. It wasn't added to the iPhone 4 or iPod touch 4. The hardware can't support all those live camera feeds on the screen at once. It requires a faster processor, such as the A5 chip whereas the two aforementioned products only have the A4, singlecore processor.

..

Haha feel free guys to keep posting but I'm past this now, I just got an iPad 2 and its amazing!! So fast!!

Right....

Covering up your anger with a fabricated ipad2

You don't have to be ashamed, we know that you are "pissed" but you don't have to act like a keyboard warrior and pretend that everything is fine.

I'm pissed my iPod touch 4g is outdated, but I just got my iPadphonenanotouch 4 and it has a hexacore processor which is blazing fast!@$@%*& Woot

I have an ipod touch second gen... Am i pissed that this ipod is now outdated... No... Technology changes for the better and software gets better. However i am dissapointed that with the last and final update that the second gen would still not support multitasking... I can see why, because of battery life, but it would have been a nice option to have... Personally, i can't wait for the 5g ipod touch because my 2g crashes in safari constantly... So annoying.
