Threads, Meta's social network that's meant to rival X, today announced several new features that are available or coming soon. For creators, Threads is launching analytics for performance measurement.

Users can see view numbers, replies, reposts, and quotes, along with follower count over time and follower demographics like age, location, and gender.

Threads on the web is gaining support for writing and saving multiple drafts of posts before sharing them with an audience. Up to 100 ideas can be saved in the new Drafts section. To go along with drafts, Threads plans to add scheduling, so Threads can be created and scheduled to go up at a later date and time. Multiple posts can be scheduled per day, multiple days in advance.

While these features are available only on the web at the current time, Threads plans to bring them to the mobile versions of the app in the future. Insights and multiple drafts are rolling out now, and scheduling posts will be coming soon.

It has now been just over a year since Threads launched, and it has over 28 million daily active users. Meta has been regularly adding new features to the social network to put it on par with X (formerly Twitter).

The allegedly freestanding legitimate social network that doesn’t do news and yet not a single celebrity with a massive following on real platforms will post on it…

But I guess if they burned that much money on their Second Life knock-off, they can keep this going infinitely.

Maybe they can get thirsty wannabe influencers to pay to promote their “viral“ stories they steal from Tiktok and Reddit.

As much as “it all happens on X” is a hilarious Linda Yaccarino meme for the ages…nothing happens on Threads

Threads is a lot more interesting to me because of all the smaller tech personalities that left Twitter the same time I did. Twitter became super toxic IMO, I don't really see any of that on threads on my feed. It has a lot of daily and monthly active users now, it's just a different platform than Twitter (all in a good way for how I use it).

Post some examples?

I‘ve had a similar experience with certain non-tech writers decamping to Bluesky and I love it there.

I used to use Twitter and stopped using it back in 2016. Honestly, I was an addict who opened my Twitter client of choice for my next hit all too often. Getting off of Twitter was one of the best choices I’ve ever made. Threads seems to offer up all the same addictive elements that Twitter did. If people want to leave Twitter/X, I’d rather see them go sober than just trade their addiction to a new service. (It would be better for the country, too, as it’s obvious that every newsroom in the US is hopelessly addicted to Twitter or one of its various microblogging competitors. So it still impacts me, kinda like the social media equivalent of second-hand smoke.)

All the ATP guys, Mike Hurley, Gruber etc are all pretty active on Threads/Mastodon. Now that it's federated it's hard to tell the difference. I don't use social media like most probably, I just want a little tech news and a little local news from where I live, and I don't want any political or social nonsense.

Yeah see I was gonna say I moved with all them to Mastodon before Threads was an idea in Zuckerberg’s colonial island compound.

So my original question, if it’s indistinguishable from Mastodon and only old people use it, what is the point? Facebook badly needs to be gaining new young users.

I wouldnt say it's indistinguishable from Mastodon. If I use the for you section, I get a TON of sports news, political stuff, commentary etc from all sorts of names I recognize as famous people or influencers. Threads has the one thing mastodon doesn't, about 20 million daily users. It knows roughly where I live so I get local weather, restaurants, teams, etc and none of that was on Mastodon. The ability to swipe posts you don't like away and alter the algorithm helps a lot.

Can you share some famous people that are on Threads not Mastodon? I’d just like to see what it looks like

28m DAUs, 200m MAUs. Pretty good numbers for a year old social network.

And has left Twitter so desperate for money they are having to sue brands for not advertising.
X didn’t sue the brands for not advertising, but for their alleged collusion in organizing an advertising boycott. This is anticompetitive behavior, and would violate antitrust law. I wouldn't characterize this as desperation, rather operating in X's best interest. I'm sure there's some ideological slant in there somewhere.

Threads is exploding right now.. so many new users.. everyone fed up with how bad X has become.. lots of celebrities if that’s what you want? Simon pegg just did a ask me anything session today..

Simon Pegg has a quarter million followers, is old as dirt, and this was his first Threads post since fall 2023. I think this, along with Taylor Swift’s sudden appearance and disappearance on the platform, is pretty telling.
