Well I wouldn't be interested in them but Neymar is 18 million followers, Selena Gomez has 17m, Beast has 9.3m, Shakira has 10m etc.

Brands? UFC has 5m, WWE 3.1m, Nike has 12.1m, Google 3m, BMW 5m, Louis Vuitton 7m etc.
Neymar last posted 7/2023, Selena 8/2023, MrBeast 7/2023

I’ll give you the brands things. We’ll see if that continues. Also prob not great for quality if brands are the top accounts.

One day Mosseri or Zuck is gonna pop out and be really excited about “rolling all the great features of threads into the IG and Facebook Blue apps.” If you can’t see this, you’re not really taking in history.

Let’s see em! And the follower counts should reflect the tens or hundreds of millions of active users allegedly on Threads.

There are many brand accounts on Threads that have millions of followers. Nike, for example, has 12.1 million followers on Threads compared to 10.2 million followers on Twitter/X. Marvel Entertainment has 9.0 million followers on Threads compared to 19.0 million on Twitter/X. BMW has 5.0 million followers on Threads compared to 2.6 million followers on Twitter/X. Usage and interest is going to vary from platform to platform.

A good first step

I mean there's no history for this, quite the opposite. They've practically broken out Messenger from from Facebook alltogther. Many people on Messenger have disabled their Facebook account.

Whatsapp has always remained totally separate too.

Threads isn't perfect, no social media is, but it's a hell of a lot more enjoyable than Twitter at the minute which is borderline unusable now. Give it another year of Elon self imploding and I think we'll see more on Threads, more and more actual good jouranlists and prominent accounts are joining. It helps that the fediverse is up and running now too - the sooner Blue Sky integrates with it too the better.

We keep hearing about the death of X/Twitter. Its only increased in popularity.

It hasn't though. The only person saying it has is Musk. It's an absolute cesspit of un-usability at the minute. I had a big account back in 2010 and lots of friends are still on as they've built up followings but they all hate it. I suppose if accounts are staying because they can't be bothered building another audience somewhere else then that's a good thing even if they hate your website. None of them have bought blue ticks though.

I would bet Elon sells Twitter to keep his Tesla shares before Threads starts seeing celebs use it the way Mosseri needs them to with his anti-news mission. I also wonder how plugging the Meta ad-network into Threads would go, probably not very popular.

The stats I have seen indicate a slight decrease in active users but those on it are spending more time on it. Both can be true.

In the UK Threads is increasing and Twitter is dropping off. Twitter still has a lead as you'd expect. Musk is doing his best at trying to make it unusable for people though. He'll keep his core group of people who like being able to say anything in the world and not getting banned whilst earning money by being as inflamatory as they can be to get replies for their blue tick nonsense. It's a horribly dull and toxic environment to be around though.

I sort of hope that Threads doesn't get that big, more people means it gets worse really. A decent level of quality would be better.

He is doing his best to allow people to have free speech. For some reason, this seems to offend a lot of people who evidently only want to listen like-think speech. I disagree with a lot of things I see on X (and other places) but have no issue with people thinking differently from me.

It's not just the free speech disaster, which has just turned into unfettered hate speech, conspiracy theory nonsense and the worst takes you've ever seen. It helped caused riots in the UK by the spread of disinformation that wasn't stopped and then idiots advising places and people to attack (Many of whom have no been jailed thankfully). He says it's free speech but whilst you can say the N word with no problem at all "cisgender" gets a notice saying the tweet will be suppressed because it falls foul of "X's hateful speech policy" you could make this stuff up.

It’s not just the free speech disaster, which has devolved into unfettered hate speech, conspiracy theories, and some of the worst takes imaginable. It helped incite riots in the UK by spreading disinformation, followed by idiots advising attacks on specific places and people (many of whom have thankfully been jailed). He claims it’s about free speech, yet while you can say the N-word without issue, using the term “cisgender” prompts a notice stating the tweet will be suppressed under “X’s hateful speech policy.” You couldn’t make it up.

But it's also the state of the site, the paying for blue badges, who are now all the worst people with the worst things to say at the top of the replies to any tweet...you have to scroll past them to find some semblance of normality.
The removal of third-party apps—which in my heyday made the site actually usable—has ruined the experience; without them, I wouldn’t have stayed. The rebranding is awful. The monetisation of antagonistic behaviour to farm engagement for profit has massively degraded the quality of content, reducing it to nonsense, engagement bait, and troll farming. The sidebar is cluttered with rubbish, including that Grok nonsense. The UX is hideous.

I also suspect he’ll fall foul of laws in many countries, especially within the EU. Free speech in the UK and Europe does not include hate speech or incitement to violence; you can’t just let things go unmoderated. In fact, the EU has already begun taking action through Ireland. Social media platforms were already struggling to keep up with regulations and prosecutions when they were moderated!

How do you know UK Threads is increasing and Twitter is dropping off? I'm not saying your claim is false, but it would be cool if you provided something to support said claim.

Twitter may be a wasteland but at least Musk is upfront with the hate. It’s much creepier and more dystopian that Facebook suppresses content from marginalized users on Threads.

An unfortunate side effect of allowing free speech is that people will post things that offend others, something that is becoming easier and easier as it seems people are looking for things to get offended about.

I am a casual user of X and maybe because my main interests on it are sports and tech, my feed isn't filled with this wasteland of hate speech and toxic crap that others seem to see. If I see anything I don't like, I ignore it, not cry about it (this does not mean I condone something like inciting riots).

Same here... Video Game Development, TTRPG's are all pretty good with great people. If I choose to follow far left and right folks, I'm going to get a cesspool of stuff.

With that, I do not want governmental agencies censoring people... As long as the post does not solicate physical violence, everything should be allowed. Tools should be in place for end-users to block people, mute, etc.

”I don’t see it therefore it doesn’t matter” is ironically a very Threads pov. Try being a marginalized person on Twitter, even in the supposed safe space of sports and tech. Abuse is like oxygen, especially since Musk took the guardrails off.

I never made any mention of it mattering or not. I simply said I don't see this supposed wasteland of toxicity in my feed.

Why do you see anything that would hurt your feelings or go against your political ideology if you have tools in place to mute/block people?

Same. I do see people disagree on a variety of subjects, but that's normal in a liberal democratic pluralist society.

Uhh... That graph is pretty flat to me and doesn't show anything dramatic except that X has SIX TIMES more users than Threads in the UK.

It will be interesting to see this graph in ten years though...

Well the actual figures show a 220% increase of Threads usage and a 11.5% decrease in Twitter usage. It doesn't include August which is when Musk started becoming obsessed with the UK and a lot of people left.

Having said that I got my account back and i'm still on there so i'm counting as an active user despite hating it - everyone from the UK I know that is still on there does it out of habit, having been there for so long and having so many connections but they absolutely despise the place now.

Why would you be on a platform while hating it? And it's kind of DUH for a new platform to have big percentage increases, especially coming from Meta.

After about 5 years, things should stabilize and we'll have a better picture.
