About the magsafe connector

Slightly off topic, but I'm interested in buying one (or maybe two) of the new displays when they appear, and you guys might be able to quickly answer something that I can't seem to find an obvious answer for.

If you don't need the magsafe connector (no notebooks using the display) can the lead be removed or are they integral to the monitor? I have a bad feeling the latter is the case or else it would have been easy to update the magsafe connector with a new cable?

The latter. There are two cords plugged in to the back of the display. One is the power cord and the second is the TB/Magsafe in one cord. That cord extends about three feet then splits in two to one thinner TB cord and a thin Magsafe cord. I suppose there is nothing stopping Apple from completely replacing the second cord plugged in the the display.

But to your point, if you plug the TB cable in to another machine and do not use the Magsafe, it will be left there dangling.

MagSafe 2 only would keep me from buying one. My wife uses a cMBP.

I really don't need USB 3 so I am considering buying the current version. I'd just hate to spend a grand with a slimmer higher res version right around the corner.

If you need the original Magsafe size, I would just buy the current display. The new one will almost certainly have Magsafe 2 since the current lineup of laptops uses it. Of course, they might come out with a Magsafe 2 to 1 adapter, in which case the newer model would work just fine.

If they don't include the adapter you can always use the power adapter that came with your laptop.

True but I want a permanent adapter at my 'docking station'. Crawling under my desk to plug in my MagSafe I keep in my travel bag would be a pain.

Has anyone heard any new news?

......waiting patiently...come on Apple the current Thunderbolt displays are ancient.

Have been waiting a year as well... $$$$ ready to go.

I don't mind if the even keep the current 1440 27". Just update it with minimum USB3.0.

slimmer would be nice - Can see it happening
Cheaper would be awesome - never with apple right?

It's probably going to happen in December around the time when the new Mac Pro goes up for order (notice I didn't say ship). Apple may silently update the store and product pages. I'm sure we will know within ~4 weeks. :) Just my guess though..

I completely agree with you...it doesn't have to be a major upgrade, just take care of all the old tech and give us Thunderbolt 2, USB 3, Magsafe 2 etc.
Yes, an iMac (thinner) style would be lovely too....

I think the new Mac Pro will be shipping the moment it becomes up for order in December. It doesn't make much sense for Apple to actually open orders before the thing ships, since this is not really a big in demand product anyway. They will have enough manufacturing capability to ship all orders even on day 1.

Why not cheaper? They made both iMacs, rMBP and MBA cheaper..

That might be true for the MBP-line but what's the excuse for lowering the prices of the iMac and the MBA? They didn't have a "classic" line for those.

Not sure what you are even arguing.

I don't fallow the prices but from what I remember they bumped the prices on iMac's last year so... did they "lower" the prices? or bring them back to where they were?

Macbook air has not changed design in a few years so besides funds involved with new processors they are way in the profit with that line.

Displays are expensive. Storage is cheap. We all know apple hasn't budged on storage prices, why would apple lower their prices on an expensive display?

Thunderbolt display v.2 wouldn't have a new design either, it would basically just have the same design as the new iMac so besides funds involved with the new circuits for TB2 and USB3, they are way in the profit for that too.

Funny you mention displays are expensive since iMacs, MBA and rMBP has built-in displays and in addition to the display, they also have a computer in them. Thunderbolt display is.. erh.. well.. only the display part.

Why would they lower the prices on expensive retina display, expensive All-in-one computer with display and arguably the most portable laptop of its kind?

I'm not saying they WILL lower the prices, I'm just saying that we're seeing a trend here where almost their whole lineup has had lowered priced so I wouldn't be surprised if they lowered the prices of their TBD as well.

I'll touch on some things and let you run wild in researching them more.

What costs more?
Computer internals Or Display panel?
Large display or small display panel?

After that, you say thunderbolt display (new) will have same design as iMac.

Ok.. Apple still needs to R&D a new shell case for the display to sit in to have the "same" design as the current iMac. Then purchase a mold or however they machine the material.

Cost? = volume. Apple sells many more "all-in-one" computers. Thus making larger purchases from supplies. Thus... receiving lower cost per unit. I'm sure you are thinking hey.. iMac and thunderbolt share that same display panel. Maybe they do, but i'll let you answer this one after doing your research as to why the thunderbolt display will be the same price as the current model.

Simple manufacturing. Something I dabble with daily. ;)

Oh, I'm sorry. Of course you must be correct then if you dabble with it daily, especially since it's just simple manufacturing.

Apple will not lower the prices of their TBD. I'll hold you to your word since you dabble with it daily ;)

Just ordered a Thunderbolt monitor.

I have been waiting over a year to purchase one, since some kind of upgrade has seemed overdue forever. I could not wait anymore and bought a current TBD. You can all thank me when a new one is released tomorrow!

I can understand your decision.
It's painful to wait, especially if you need it for work.
(I had a hard time waiting for the new macbook pro this year, but I'm glad I did)

I'm waiting to see what happens when they introduce the new MacPro (which comes with the new Thunderbolt 2)....

you'd think they would upgrade then....surely?

I find the part about TB2 4K (Sharp) displays more interesting. I think it is a placeholder for Apples own, TB2 IGZO 4K display.

It would certainly seem that Apple will release a 4k display at some point. 3840x2160 would be a pixel doubled resolution of 1920x1080. If the 5120x2880 wallpapers included in Mavericks are any indication, then perhaps Apple intend to offer a 'More Space' option of up to 2560x1440 rendered at 5120x2880, then scaled down to the 4K panel resolution, similar to the way the rMBP handles this.

Does anybody think that Thunderbolt Display shown on Apple's Thunderbolt page http://www.apple.com/thunderbolt/ appears to have a slightly lower stand than the current generation?

I agree with you, the one on the left looks like it has a shorter stand than the one on the right :)
