....so basically....if anyone buys a MacPro or MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt 2 capabilities, bad luck! ....no monitor to take advantage of that?

I just don't get it??

Come on Apple, don't drop the ball on this one.

I don't expect new thunderbolt displays at the same time as the mac pro. Just like with the mac pro apple will take its time tell it can make and release what it wants at the price point they want.

What I do think we will see is two thunderbolt display models. One that is the current resolution at a price point a bit lower than the current displays and then a 4K display close to twice as much. It won't be cheep but it will be nice.

This is just my own speculation as a consumer.

4K Ultra HD is 3840 x 2160, four times the resolution of Full HD. released and available today. MSRP is $1400 but use promocode T2LLG$98G7$F19 for a 16.5% discount. Once you go 4K, nothing looks the same.
Buy.
Specs.

* Disclaimer: I'm a sucker for DPI
$1169 24" 4k monitor. :p

Fantastic, I agree with you.....

4K would be nice, but I'm not in a position to buy a $2000 + monitor.
BUT, I am interested in an updated model.
The current Thunderbolt display doesn't even have USB 3.0, it's an absolute (2011) dinosaur.... why would any one buy it?

I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens in the new year?

Merry Christmas everyone.

I said the exact same thing..... Then i bought one.

Compared to my 15R the resolution stinks. I can't see apple updating it at this point as most of their computers now support 4k.

For what it is worth, the current one works well and is capable. I wanted an updated one so that I could plug in my quick usb3.0 HDD but instead I will be picking up a Thunderbolt external, possibly SSD. This works even better.

my iPhone 5s is still usb 2.0 so no loss there.. My DAC doesn't need speed so for ME, this model tb worked out perfect.

it should NOT have a 1k price tag. I paid 600 for my basically brand new unit.

Sigh, I ordered one for work. I was looking for a high resolution monitor for my 2012 rMBP. It was ordered from work so I had to make the purchase before the end of the year. Hoping it comes out within the next two weeks so I can return/exchange for the newer model, but it's looking like that's less and less likely.

Disappointing..

I always thought Apple prided themselves on full control and look (stylistically) of the user experience.

Sharp monitors? Is this the best solution you can offer Apple?

Have you seen this? They have OLD (2011) Thunderbolt monitors alongside an ugly Sharp monitor? on the final cut pro home page.

What the??

http://www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/

If you’re going to build a powerful computer, that the new MacPro is, you need to follow through and build a new monitor to compliment it.
Otherwise it’s a half hearted effort.

Don’t drop the ball on this one Apple!

:(

I hear you, but I don't see Apple coming out with a Thunderbolt 2 display??

....umm Apple, hello? anyone there?

Oh I know, and LG DOES have a 4K display out too. But it's easy to read the thing quickly and think they have a 4K ultra wide, which would be really awesome. Although I wouldn't be able to have a two monitor setup on my desk, even if one was normal 16:9

A 4k "ultra wide"? Isn't that non-sensical? a 4K monitor is by definition (about) 4,000 pixels wide. So to make a "wide" 4K screen you start with a normal one and then remove some vertical resolution.

Rememeber "4K means 4K across the long edge. So a wide 4K is still 4K

Not quite true. Thunderbolt 2 is backwards compatible with 1 so the old Thunderbolt Display from Apple still works, as do other TB devices. Thunderbolt 2 also brings us DisplayPort 1.2 which is a bit more interesting when it comes to displays. Dell has quite a collection of such displays. Thanks to DisplayPort 1.2 you can daisy chain them (like firewire and Thunderbolt, DisplayPort 1.2 supports daisy chaining). Lastly it also supports 4k displays.

When it comes to displays there are quite a lot that can actually take advantage of Thunderbolt 2. The only problem is that they can't fully take advantage of Thunderbolt 2. However, if we are very realistic about it that won't be a problem. The Thunderbolt Display doesn't need Thunderbolt 2 to function; it would if it were 4k. You can also put the Thunderbolt Display at the end of the chain, just like with any non-Thunderbolt display (for example: Dells DP 1.2 displays). Also, currently there aren't that many Thunderbolt 2 devices around, but they are coming. 4k displays are also in its infancy (look at price and refreshrate) but they are available and usable. If you want such display and need to put it at the end of the chain there will be a problem. However, both the MBP Retina and the Mac Pro have more than 1 Thunderbolt 2 port.

Currently the biggest problem is not the displays but your Mac: it has to support Thunderbolt 2 and not all of them do...yet. We just need to wait a bit longer I suppose.

My (current) guess would be that the new display will be launched close to when the new Mac Pro becomes available in December

After reading all the reports of stores seemingly trying to sell out their existing inventories of the Apple Thunderbolt Display in anticipation of an Apple Thunderbolt Display 2013, it is surprising to me that we are still left speculating. What do you folks think will happen now.

Man I wish I knew. But if CES brings any interesting TB 2 monitors apart from LG and in light of radio silence from Apple, I'll look at picking something else up. Would love to support Apple but can't just sit around waitin'. A

So here's a thought. I have an early 2013 rMBP with 2xThunderbolt 1. I'm on the tipping edge to get a 2011 thunderbolt display but I want to wait for the thin iMac style 1440p or 4k screens to appear (hoping Jan/Feb)... To me it seems that it won't drive a 4k screen because the thunderbolt 10gb bandwidth isn't sufficient which seems crazy... But I had a thought.

So. Remember the 30" cinema displays needing dual-DVI to power both half of the screen? If 2 TB1's in a rMBP can run 2x1440p thunderbolt displays then what's the chances of a dual-tb1 style Y cable to power two parts of a 4k screen? And just include thunderbolt pass throughs and USB 3 on the back (they'll probably skip firewire 800)?

Great reply, sounds like you know what you're talking about!
Thanks for taking the time to go over it in detail.

...I guess I'll just have to be patient and see what 2014 brings us.

Merry Christmas everyone!

:)

I would be happy with TB1 display from Apple. But I just can't get past the price. I would've thought the price would be cheaper by now. :(. I can hold out until mid January. After that, I need to order a new monitor.

I'm on the same boat as you.

I'd love to see a redesign (new iMac) Apple Thunderbolt display with USB3.0 and TB1 or TB2

To everyone that wants a TB but is waiting for a refresh, if it doesn't come, what monitor will you go with?

I agree there are too many TB1 Apple Laptops and MacMinis out there to not have a TB1 display offering. I do hope they update the line soon, and offer a cosmetically improved TB1 Display (with USB3) and perhaps resurrect the 32 inch size in a 4k Rez, with USB3 ports, aimed at the nMP. I think they will see how well the nMP sells longitudinally before committing to a monitor that work work well with only a few of its computers.

My nMP 'shipping in February', I will be sticking with my old DisplayPort Display for now, and see how things settle out in 2014. Not sure a premium for 4k will really be of benefit to me in the 27-32 inch monitor size.

Just bought a TBD from Amazon. No regrets. I am downgrading my laptop in screen size and wanted an external monitor. I don't want or need 4K and there is no other monitor I would settle on in terms of aesthetics and quality. TBD is whats available. Not a very hard decision.

I still can't understand why people who think they need something choose to wait forever when they could just buy for their needs today. There's always a resale market.

Congrats :). Don't get me wrong, it's still a great screen and I'd give in but on principle I won't pay full price for a 2 year old screen. Plus I'm not desperately in need of a new screen.

And I hate the hassle of resale, I'm too lazy to pack up and sort out delivery for something that size!

A better panel with less glare and USB3 would be enough for me to part with my cash, it doesn't need to be 4K. It wouldn't hurt for them to refresh the look of it though.
