The PPI is only 2560 x 1440 on the Thunderbolt Display, which was great in 2011.

But now that I've seen what's coming out this year (thank you CES 2014) I'm getting very excited about the possibilities of Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 IPS panels.

If Apple was smart, they would announce something very soon, because people can only wait for so long. But I don't think anything is going to happen.

Of course you're right.
Just saying as someone who thought exactly the same, I'm sold to the actual quality that the TB display offers today! It will be a while before apple supports a proper UI scaling method for UHD displays I suppose. And when that's the case and 60hz 28" UHD displays pop up, I'll be the first who sells his TB displays.

I want to apologise for my reply to your post.

It seems after doing some research that my computer (current MacBook Pro Retina Late 2013 Maxed Out Version) does not support Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) at an acceptable refresh rate of 60Hz via the . (PLEASE CORRECT ME ANYONE IF I'M INCORRECT).
With what I've read it's something to do with the MST ( Multi-Stream Transport) being disabled in Mavericks (which is enabled for Mac Pro's only).

Perhaps this will change with Thunderbolt 2 support, but I don't think anyone knows.

It looks like 60Hz support should be technically possible for your rMBP, it's just a matter of Apple enabling it in a future Mavericks update. http://9to5mac.com/2013/12/23/new-retina-macbook-pros-can-drive-4k-displays-at-60hz-when-running-windows-mac-os-needs-new-drivers/

I can't wait until we start to see 4k support in Beta builds for Mavericks as I would hope that is a sign a display update is coming.

Of course you're right.

I agree - the current TB display looks amazing. I've looked at it in store a few times recently and it is fine without a 4K update. Congrats on the pickup.

I unfortunately just can't bring myself to spend $1k on the display due to lack of TB2, USB3, etc. If Apple was selling it for $600 I would buy one immediately and wait for 4K to mature.

Seriously considering this: Planar PXL2790MW. It's going for ~500 in most stores. The downsides are no USB hub and obviously none of the conveniences of a thunderbolt display (charging etc), what it does provide is enough price difference that you can buy an external thunderbolt dock if it matters a lot to you.

WHat's most surprising to me is that Planar is obviously able to build a monitor with the screen fused to the glass and put it in mass production, something that we assumed apple had difficulty doing which is why they never released a TB2 display. They wanted to save all their yields for the iMacs. I guess that's not true.

I'm considering this display as well, it gets good reviews, and people seem to like it. Ultimately I'd like to see one in person before I drop the hammer, but I may go ahead anyway.

It does lack the 'Docking station/macbook charging' of the TBD, which isn't an issue for me, but it is also much thinner.

Hey guys, just thinking about purchasing 2 thunderbolt displays via the refurbished area on apple and noticed something interesting today...they are still $799 but instead of saying 20% off, they say 15% off. However, retail is still $999 on the regular apple site. Think it means anything, or something just messed up because it did say 20% off yesterday?

Wow, tomshardware.com gave this monitor extremely positive feedback, impressive.

What a shame I can't find it available anywhere in Australia?

Well, my waiting is almost over. I'm holding out until the first week of February. After that, I have to buy a Thunderbolt Display. I also need a Wacom tablet. You have me over a barrel, Apple. I might as well get ready cause it's going to hurt.

I'm in the same position as you.

I'm really upset with me, because I've sold my ADC 30" last year expecting for a new thin Apple thunderbolt display to be release at the end of the year (2013).

And now I miss my ADC 30" :(

Although I feel the same about the not released update of a a potential Thunderbolt Display refresh, I will rather buy a cheaper 4k display from Dell or Acer than waiting another year for Apple to update an super old monitor.

What would be really nice is if Apple came out and said it expects the new monitor to be released within a certain time frame. I'm thinking that if Dell, Asus, Acer and others have mastered 4K Apple certainly has the technology in hand. I'm holding out for a retina iMac.

Retina does not mean it's 4k. Retina is individually determined. For me, I find it hard to count the individual pixels in the current iMacs.

I'm sticking with current TB displays for the nMP.
Apple first needs to update osx with resolution independent UI scaling of some sort, then we can talk about 4k again.

Retina does not mean it's 4k.

True, but so long as the screen picture is as clear and crisp or better than my rMBP I'll be really happy. I don't expect to see a new display or an iMac with a new display until WDC 14.

I went into the Apple store today, the Thunderbolt Display is a nice looking monitor, such a shame it's so old.
The Apple representative laughed and agreed with me.

A lot to pay for old tech.

Well, as I see it you got three options here:

1. You buy the Thunderbolt Display,
2. You buy a cheaper, current generation monitor from Asus, Acer, Dell or someone else
3. You wait

I agree with you. It's a waiting game now unfortunately.

I don't mind waiting for a couple of months and see if Apple comes out with a new Thunderbolt display.
Otherwise I may be tempted to purchase something like the new ($799) ASUS PB287Q 4K 28" 60Hz 1ms monitor (depending on Thunderbolt 2/Display Port 1.2 OS X Mavericks software updates).

Time will tell.

Link to confirmation that is has 60hz please.

Can't they release it this quarter please...m
I just need a second display for my nMP to the TB display.

If I could only see somewhere how small 4k on a 28" really looks like to make a decision..

But we'll I guess probably in the end it will be better to wait until Apple has things figures out.

The only thunderbolt 2 displays that are likely to be released this year with be the LG ultrawides, one of which will be a cinema "real" 4k screen.

i can't believe people are saying we will have to wait until June for a new display!

by June it will be 20 months since the new iMac slim design was released! that's insane my friends!
