Re: Thunderbolt 3 Ports on Right Side of 13-Inch MacBook Pro Have Reduced PCI Express Bandwidth

I find it interesting to compare Apple's approach to one of it's main competitors in the "pro" ultrabook market.

Microsoft chose to stick with two USB 3.0 ports and a Mini Display port on it's new Surface Book:

The advantages of backwards compatability with USB 3.0 have certainly been raised many times in the discussion of the new MBP's lack of them, however I think on a "pro" machine that bandwidth restrictions of strictly USB 3.0 could mean a big slow down in workflow.

Also, Microsoft's approach will require more and more dongles as the years go by.

What the hell is SurfaceConnect? Talk about wasting space with proprietary BS ...

I was expecting a block diagram of the PCIe lanes and not just text.
About once a month my right-side ports fail altogether. It takes a hardware reset to re-enable the 2 ports. Not even a power supply or a card reader will work when the ports or down. Actually, the MacBook Pro is two months old and this has happened twice now.

Apple uses USBC, everyone gets upset. Microsoft uses proprietary charging/dock port + mini displayport (needs a dongle most of the time), no one cares. Also no TB3.

Yep, Microsoft is going all-in on old school USB 3.0 and mini displayport, including their new Surface Laptop and rumored Surface Pro 4.

It's funny.

People won't buy Microsoft's new computers because they don't have USB-C

And people won't buy Apple's new computers because they DO have USB-C

^ That is the sign that the transition between the two standards is well underway. All that is left is for buyers to decide whether they prefer forward or backward compatible ports.

oversimplification

People won't buy Microsoft's new computer because they don't have ANY new USB-C

and

People won't buy Apple's new computers because they have ONLY USB-C

both of these companies could have both shut up any detractors by compromising with ONE, just ONE of the ports they omitted. If Apple went 3x USB-C and 1x USB-A, nobody says anything because they have a fall back legacy option.
if Microsoft included just ONE USB-C, they've provided the option to bridge the next few years till USB-C is prolific enough to really be in use.

but both companies decided to perform some form of consumer hostile maneuver here for their own interests, and not ours.

Seriously, right now if you want an Apple quality computer, running windows, with the right mix of features, Razer is the only guys trying to deliver on that.
