There seems to be some variant of a memory leak with Tiger... i.e. something's slowly eating up HD space...

I think it's time for a restart and see if I get my HD space back...

Just logging out will fix the prob as well. I had similar issues in Panther. Not sure what it is though, somebody suggested it might be a font issue.

Dashboard Stickies seem to erase for no reason. Luckily I've found out that the widget stickie plist file stores these text stickies so opening it up and copy/pasting it into a new stickie works marvelously

OK, thanks... I didn't think of fonts, I was guessing something along the lines of overeager log files or some temp files that didn't quite know the meaning of temporary... ;)

Ok... just did a little test.

I had as mentioned above 6.04 GB left on my HD (and didn't understand where at least the last gigabyte had gone). Did a log out/log in, as suggested by munkle, and what do you know, suddenly Finder says it's 6.45 GB free, and after starting Stickies it even jumped to 6.79 :)confused:). Still not quite happy, I did a reboot, and upon logging back in Finder tells me it has 7.11 GB free!

Now, where did the Tiger hide my gigabyte...?

I have had this experience too.... But then again, I saw some fluctuations along these lines in Panther as well...I think they are bigger in Tiger, though. In addition to what has been suggested, I think that the virtual memory file is probably also a culprit?

OK - Tiger is great! I'd just like to say that first - now for the bugs I've found.

1. Try opening a pdf in Safari on a framed website (e.g. www.bmj.com articles) then right mouse/ctrl click over the pdf - bingo Safari crashes. Thought I might be able get a "Save pdf..." option.

2. iCal Widget doesn't seem to work - shows me the date, but clicking on a date doesn't give me any data. I have about 10 calendars, some of which spend most their time deselected - don't know if this affects things.

3. Can't seem get iCal to show Birthdays from Address Book and the help file for iCal is still the 1.5.4 help file (didn't UG to 1.5.5), not iCal 2.0

Few things there I'd like to be able to use there.

Generally, bloody impressed. Dictionary/Thesaurus Hover-over by pressing ctrl-?-D and holding ctrl-? as you mouse around is my newest favourite feature!

Confirm -- oddly, this works fine in pages without the frame. And in those cases, there *is* an open in preview option in that menu...hmmm..this could be very problematic for academic users, since many journals use the same format as bmj does.

2. iCal Widget doesn't seem to work - shows me the date, but clicking on a date doesn't give me any data. I have about 10 calendars, some of which spend most their time deselected - don't know if this affects things.

Confirm -- as far as I can tell, the calendar widget does nothing particularly useful.... I don't understand this. Hopefully the iCal widget is something different, which Apple has not yet released. :(

I haven't tried the birthdays, because I'd already manually programmed them all into iCal in the 1.x days. But I can confirm that my help file too (archive and install) is 1.5.5 and not 2.0. Interesting oversight! Interestingly, I very rarely use help in Apple applications. I use it all the time in MS Office, as well as in most of the stats software I use. But in Apple apps, things tend to be intuitively obvious or absolutely impossible. :D

Well, I just installed Tiger on my iMac and it's fantastic! Unfortunately, with any major OS release there are bound to be a few bugs that rear their ugly little heads. Rather than having a separate topic for each discovery, I decided it would be nice to have one topic devoted entirely to Tiger bugs.

So far, the only hiccup I've encountered is with the iTunes widget. When I tried to pause a song, it would switch to a different song instead. I tried relaunching iTunes and the widget began functioning as it should. Strange. Maybe it was a one time deal...I don't know.

the iTunes widget is hell! It won't pause music, and sometimes instead of pausing it will just completley stop playing - no play option. It is soo annoying!

Mail seems pretty unstable, and mouse clicking on buttons, folders, menus etc. can become totally unresponsive, I have to move the cursor off of what I'm clicking on and back over it to have it work when I click...very annoying.

More importantly I can no longer Preview in browser in Dreamweaver in Safari or Firefox, says page not found (includes path of the file) and the links in the DW Help menu no longer are working...gives this error message:

Hmm, mine is showing 1.5.5 and my Birthdays work. I turned the field on in Address Book and typed in the appropriate birthday.

Then in iCal's preferences, I told it to 'Show Birthdays Calendar'

Cue one slice of birthday cake with a candle in the Calendar sidebar. Interestingly, even if you put the year in, it doesn't tell you which birthday it is...

Widgets generally can be quite unresponsive (admittedly, my Mac is just a 800MHz G4, 768MB RAM). The iTunes widget can take 5 seconds or more to respond to clicks, and the Stickies widget rarely works.

From the top of my head (on a Windows PC at work, I'll confirm this when I get home in about an hour) all the menu extras are in /System/Library/Menu Extras/ or /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/

Purely out of habit, I always do a search for ".menu" files every time I install a new version of OSX, just to see if Apple has included some menu items but not installed them.

Actually, while editing this post, I thought of another bug, which seems to have been introduced with the latest versions of Safari - certainly in Tiger, not sure if it also occurs in Panther: the word-wrapping in text boxes in Safari (such as this one) has changed - most notably anywhere there's a "/" symbol Safari tends to break up the line, leaving lots of broken URLs and tags in my posts. I was going crazy - until I realised the change in behaviour.

No more Preview thumbnail drag

Yeah, so the Preview.app is more like a downgrade then an improvement. I read through all the complaints but didn't read this one:

No more dragging the thumbnail to the desktop.

I like to select a group of image files and toss 'em into Preview so that they open up, and I can see a bunch of thumbs. Normally what I would do now is look at these thumbs, and decide what ones I want to use for a project. Now the key for me is, is that I want to modify these images so I want to make a copy and modify that. What what easy for me was dragging the thumb to the desktop... 'cause that made a copy without having to go up to the export window. Or without having to dig in a folder and manually match name for name. I could select image files fast like a madman.

At least I have Automator. I hope that will do it.

problems starting Safari from Mail

1) System loses memory track segment when clicking on URL in Mail, and the Safari application then hangs, apparently in infinite recurse, though I didn't wait that long. Force Quit did not work to stop Safari, at first. I am not sure how I got it to Quit, but will try it some more to refine the information.

2) Had a similar problem when I did not want to register, the tuxedo clad helper would not quit, and I finally had to do a power down. No help from Force Quit, no help from force restart-- -

When you are renaming a file in the Finder by editing the name, the name (or maybe it's the border around it) flickers with each keystroke. It didn't used to happen under Panther. Now if feels jumpy when it used to feel smooth. What purpose does this strange change serve?

It seems, at least to me, that the cause is that the select tool (which is used for this purpose), along with all the other tools, are permanently disabled for some reason. If my theory is correct, once Apple gets this bug fixed, we'll have all our old Preview functionality back, and then some.

I also got a suspect in System Preferences -> Security -> Use secure virtual memory. I've now turned that off and will in the next day or so see if that was in fact the culprit...

I have now used my computer for several hours, and still have about the same HD space as when I turned the machine on...

Conclusion: Secure Virtual Memory was the HD space eating culprit, at least in my case... :)

I imported about 50 photos into iPhoto- Worked fine.

Opened it a second time

It said it had to upgrade them. So I clicked on OK

Then they all appeared square and I couldn't see them as anything other than thumbnails.

So I deleated them and now it won't re-import the originals, even though Preview will open them. WTF is that all about?

That's not a Tiger problem, unfortunately. The DVD region is tied to your DVD-ROM drive and not to your operating system. If you used up your four changes, you will have to use a different firmware for your drive.
