Mail completely destroyed

After upgrading 3 of my 4 Macs I've come to the horrible realization that Tiger has completely deleted all my email and email accounts. (I have back ups, thank God.) Not only that but after setting up my accounts all over again, I can only send mail. I won't get new mail. It won't even show the main window at start up, I have to go in manually and have it show. To quit I have to force quit the app.

These are my 3 Macs with the same problem:

-iMac 800mhz G4
-iBook 700mhz G3 12"
-PowerMac cube 450mhz G4

I did a regular upgrade on all. I have a PowerBook 1.5ghz G4 15" that I have not upgraded since its my main computer and I cannot afford to be with email at all.

What do you guys recommend? Is there a fix to this? Clean install on all of them? Is it possible to downgrade to Panther? Nothing in Tiger has much benefit for me. Not until Photoshop incorporates core image into its features.

Thnx in advanced.

Permissions

Has anybody had any problems with permissions? I've had to repair mine several times. I guess it could have to do with loading all of my software back on the system but I don't remember having any problems when I did the same for Panther. So far, it's not a big problem but just wanted to know if I was alone. Otherwise I', happy with the new OS :) Safari really seems alot faster also.

G5 1.8 single (original)

Yeah they are nice, just pisses me off they take such a powerful processor to run smoothly. My 933 iBook G4 can't handle them very well and neither can my roommate's 1.5+ ghz Powerbook.

the nature of this type of compression requires extensive processing.

I am having the same problem, I cannot get any email. It does not see my accounts a major pain. I have just got a new 17" machine and did the transfer from my 15". I am going to reinstall 10.4 then reimport all my data.

A couple of things...

1# Installation was a mess due to the fact that my DVD drive seems to skip a lot, doesn't regularly recognize DVD at all, and choked on repeated install atempts. My solution was to run to the store and by a CD claner but that had no effect. After a few long hours I decided to borrow my friends iBook anf connect to it in Target Disk Mode, it found the volume and installed no problem.

2# Mail is horrible looking the icons at the top seem so freaking out of place

3# Not sure if my imac g4 700 is choking on 802.11 but my iChat and iSight is totaly gagging on something, it was very fluid before with Panther but it is stuttering badly.

4# WON'T SHUTDOWN or RESTART!! I am serious. Everytime I try to reboot or shutdown it just hangs there with just the desktop photo and the mouse pointer! I left it for two hours tonight when I went out, and still had to manually shut it down.

5# Mail is so ugly!!

another one

well after spending all day fixing a "wont shut down" issue another has now reared its ugly head. now my popcorn wont work! i was trying to burn a dvd tonight and it loads but immediately crashes when trying to load movie to burn to a dvd. this totally sucks. popcorn may be my favorite application, anyone else have this problem?

Tiger does not work the a BT Voyager 2100 wireless router. and im not the only one, another person has mentioned this on my blog. Apple; FIX IT! its panther for me until it works.

I am majorly pissed!

My PowerMac worked perfectly with 10.3.9. .... but not with 10.4.

I wanted to install 10.4 so I inserted the DVD to my drive. Then there was that well-known message that you have to restart the machine in order to boot from the DVD...

The Apple Logo shows and a few seconds later... POOF! Kernel panic!!! I tried like 5 times in a row, always the same result. Since the computer worked fine under 10.3.9 there wasn't a lot of things that could have caused that problem. So first thing I did was to remove all the PCI cards I installed.

And see... the Installer DVD booted correctly! I installed the system and booted from HardDrive... worked fine. So I reinstalled my PCI-Cards. Booting the system... the Apple Logo... and again... POOF! Kernel Panic!!!

I switched the slots for the cards. And (praise the Lord!) the machine booted correctly! I worked for a few minutes and checked all the settings/drivers... then I did a reboot and POOF!!! Kernel panic again!!! ARRRRGH!!!

I am SO MAD! It took me like 4 hours to find out which card is causing in what sitiuation that stupid kernel panic! And it is my Adaptec SCSI controller which worked always fine until now!!!

I removed it for now...

HELLO APPLE? A PCI card shouldn't cause a kernel panic when booting (even from the intsaller DVD), no matter if the card is supported or not!!!

Other than that the weather widget in Dashboard crashed several times on me now. Some widgets don't keep their settings as well...

Other than that I can't say a lot, was busy fixing that stupid PCI problem...

Not really a big deal, still... anyone else's dashboard not showing ripple effect when launching a new widget? I sure would like show this off!
if you have a mac mini, it doesnt support core image, atleast thats what the guy at the store told me when I asked the same question (while using a mini). I could be wrong though.

Here's some

Overall, I am enjoyng the Tiger experience :D. There are some little things that get to me and hopefully be fixed with the next update. They are as follows:

Mail - When sending a Message, there is no percentage status of how much of the Email has been sent.

Dashboard - Widgets that I install do not appear in the Widjet bar.

Automator - When you are compiling an Automator workflow, dragging new workflow actions into your sequence can take forever. You can drag the action into the workflow section but it takes time for it to drop into position. I get the spinning beachball on my G5!! Automator can be a bit savage so I suggest not making complex workflows. Make a few smaller ones and just link them together so you can see the output of each step. During one of mine I ended up renaming on my desktop "001, 002" etc..

Safari / Stuffit - After downloading a .sit, stuffit expander does not automatically expand the item.

well that's about it...

Encrypted Sparse images are near broken - copying large files then remounting causes the contents of the files to disappear.

Also, backing up from my FW hard drive to my Internal Hard Drive causes hard and soft lockups which seem like kernel trouble.

A small but irritating problem: deleting the default rule in Mail 2 to highlight mail from Apple mailing lists doesn't actually turn off the highlighting...

i ve only had some problems with the iTunes remote in Dashboard, it doesn't always pause and when you mange to unpause it, it goes to a completely different playlist. Also the search in finder feels a bit slow compared to spotlight in the 'menubar'. Apart from tht, works like a charm...boots faster, runs faster, shutdown faster :D

I cant send mail with OSX Tiger.

I use .mac.

Write the email and press send button.
The mail dissapears, but is not sent and not stored in the "send" folder.

Thanks Apple :)

WOW...Tiger is really buggy.

I have spent the past 7 hours playing around with it, and there are an unbelievable number of rough edges.

I haven't found anything critical yet--although mail came close with it's odd bugs--but in general there is a lot of polish still left to do.

Don't get me wrong, I am impressed with Tiger and happy about the work Apple has done. I am also happy I did not put Tiger on my work desktop yet. I bet it will be at least 10.4.2 before that happens, which bums me out.

I now understand why .1 is so close around the corner. It's gotta be a huge download when it comes.

I wonder with Quartz 2D turned off and all of the bugs I have seen tonigh what Apple's plans are. Which iteration of Tiger is the true shipping version? Let's hope it is sooner than later.

It's posts like this that will also stay my hand. I've got it preordered from Amazon and I'll prob. put it on a spare partition straight away just to have a play, but it's not going near my main partitions at work or at home until it's been put through its paces with various apps. And I'll also ensure that my main partition is cloned, just in case.

For me, Panther didn't feel quite right until 10.3.3... besides I have some other hardware upgrades I need to do first.

I suspect that the imperative may have been to get the release out in a timely fashion and that the scheduling of this may also have had a marketing purpose as well.

Well, I'll more precise and say it's Finder that's the buggiest. Otherwise, every other program seems to be functioning quite well. In the time that I've been using Spotlight, it's works extremely well. Dashboard is cool too, although I was able to bring several widgets onto the main screen. This is either a bug or a hidden feature. It's hard to tell at this point. BTW, will the Blob™ make a return appearance?

Now on to Finder. The first day using it, I noticed several in-your-face bugs. So many in fact, I'll just list them.

  1. First time mounting a shared volume, I was unable to unmount it for the life of me. It was stuck in Finder like the home partition. Only a reboot removed it. Weird.
  2. In column view, sometimes the horizontal scroller would have difficulty scrolling leftwards, back to the parent folders. It would get stuck.
  3. I've been able to do this once, but it weirded me out. I was able to resize the finder AT THE SAME TIME as I am moving it? Does that make any sense?
  4. Ars Technica did a test with Smart Folders where the Finder would not remember the state that it was last in. I think this is the biggest problem with Finder currently. It is difficult to predict how Finder shows new windows once changes have been made.

Well, after 5 hours I've finally got my environment almost back to where I want it and all my apps reinstalled.

So far, I've only seen two bugs that register:

1) I used the spiffy auto-user-import after a completely clean install (for the first time), but for some reason one of my users had absolutely nothing imported--ended up with a home containing nothing but an empty desktop and minimal library, not even an empty Documents folder. The other two (non admin users with way less files) were fine, but I did have to reimport everything manually (ah, what the heck, I was sort of planning on doing that anyway to muck out useless junk).

2) DVD Player seems to be half-broken; when I first insert a DVD, DVD Player launches but it does not mount in the finder and DVD Player doesn't recognize it. If I eject and re-insert with DVD Player open, it'll work fine. VLC, however, will play it even when it's not showing up. G5 with a factory 106.

So far, pretty good--feels smooth.

Yes, I thought the same, but I was so antsy for Tiger that I had to have it NOW!!! :(

Actually, mine runs fine. Its the language Translator tool that's giving me fits, as it doesn't work at all. I can't input or anything.

And I find it funny how there are so many developers who had Tiger and had so much time to play with it, and yet here we are with the retail version, and people are even having simple errors. Shouldn't developers have caught the easily noticeable bugs?

Widgets

I get that one as well.. frustrating isnt it :)

Even after you have placed them into the Widget's folder? That works OK for me.

Yes - having the same problem. Really annoying. As soon as you try to open a VIDEO_TS folder, disk image or DVD disc it just suddenly terminates. Will probably have to wait for an update from Roxio.

Phew!!!

Now that one did scare me after upgrading but, I just did a test and found it works fine for me. I went through some of the issues others have mentioned but, I seem to be running fine on 2 out of 3 macs (a G5 PM and the wife's 12" PB). The third is on loan to another family member but I think I will keep that one on Panther for VPC to run stuff otherwise, I gotta dust off the damned Dell again.

My wife is very impressed with the pics to iPhoto functionality and the widget for the weather. If we could get a widget going for whitepages.com.au she would be amazed and well impressed.

help please!

I got tiger yesterday, all installed and everything... fine, spotlight did it's indexing thing no problem.
Today, I imported all my mail from gmail to mail.app over pop3, and now spotlight can't find any of it... Bizarre.
Anyone know how to force spotlight to re-index? because it doesn't seem to be indexing by itself on the fly.
