• I cannot quantify this, but Exposé feels choppier in Tiger than Panther. While it could be an effect of my upgrade as opposed to a clean install, it fits in with other accounts I've read of what similar machines to mine are experiencing. My GPU is not Core Image compliant, but this surely shouldn't affect it.

Agree. I did a clean install on a G5/NVidia 6800, and still it is noticeably choppier. Part of it's beauty was the smoothness, so this is a shame.

Why does iPhoto searching REALLY matter? If you're searching for a photo in iPhoto, the odds are you want to see that picture when you find it. If Spotlight found the pic it would have to open iPhoto. So what is the difference if you open up iPhoto and use its indexed search engine?

Because you're not looking for a photo to begin wih, you're looking for a keyword.

help please!

I got tiger yesterday, all installed and everything... fine, spotlight did it's indexing thing no problem.
Today, I imported all my mail from gmail to mail.app over pop3, and now spotlight can't find any of it... Bizarre.
Anyone know how to force spotlight to re-index? because it doesn't seem to be indexing by itself on the fly.

From the terminal:

cd /
sudo rm -r .Spotlight-V100

..and reboot

Worked for me when Spotlight decided to refuse finding anything.

I haven't managed to get Automator to actually do anything yet. The instructions are pretty thin, it seems.

But I did see that Preview, for all its glaring faults, does now operate my Epson scanner through the Import... command. Maybe it could do this before, but I certainly never noticed.

The Address widget is no different from a minimized Address Book. And the Stickies widget is no different from Stickies. Since you can only get ONE widget at a time to stay on the screen, what is the point of that?

Preview: The option to play animated GIFs has been removed. The Play button is no longer in the toolbar customization set. Why the downgrade???!

Ouch. I thought the three things I said about Preview were damning enough, but this is nothing short of ridiculous. As far as Preview goes, it feels like Tiger's version is a downgrade from Panther, not an upgrade.

Seriously unimpressive.

just installed Tiger, the first thing i noticed when i opened the Finder:

the top line of the buttons get cut off -.-

also, everytime i type something into the Spotlight bar, it briefly diaplys results then goes back to indexing

Did you order online? Watch the free 'seminar' thing - it explains Automator quite well :)

I meant when Dadhboard is "off". Strangely enough, I can now get several widgets to stay on screen, including a maximum of two Stickies, which I couldn't do before. It doesn't work with many of them, though. And of course you can't minimize the Dashboard Stickies.

Bugs I've noticed so far:

1. Hard drive icons on desktop seem to loose their place, I did report this as a bug with Panther - never was fixed, I had to turn of showing hard drive icons because of this!

2. If you click the 'hide' option in System Preferences > Accounts > Log in items - it makes no difference, I have Mail and iChat launching on log in, both no longer hide themselves like they did in Panther.

3. Dashboard widges move between boots, ie. several weather widets were all lined up, on reboot they are not lined up any more.

4. Type startup disk in System Preferences, and it listed twice - Startup Disk and Startup disk, I think a typo!

Silly cosmetic bugs surpise me, not very good for 18 months + of development.

Toast doesn't work properly anymore. You can't do a copy or disk image of a volume anymore because Toast can't unmount it properly...

Intriguing and slightly alarming. Toast 6.x, right?

I dont even have Tiger but I noticed this:

H.264 Codec only works on high end macs. 1.8 or 2.0 GHz Dual PowerMacs just to have it smoothly!?

I bet that 10.4.1 will have an update for this. H.264 was advertised as a higher quality video file which just replaces the current QT movie engine and therefore should be the same speed and play perfectly. Nope. QT for Windows may play this well, I suspect its a problem with Tiger.

Oh, great! I'm glad I held off upgrading my other Macs.

Sorry people, but here's another one. Tiger now can't display the full information for the remaining space of a large hard drive on the desktop.

I'm starting to think that someone should make a "200 features which make Tiger less useful than Panther" parody page to make a point to Apple. It seems quite clear that this OS has been released far far far too early.

4 of my buddies are experiencing a lot of what you all have said so it must be a global thing then. I'm gonna buy Tiger next weekend or maybe next month. I hope they will have the major glitches worked out by then... maybe???

Yes my friend who uses Toast is PO'ed that it doesn't work properly anymore but that is a 3rd party deal. Also OnyX does not work with 10.4 yet.

Shoulda waited till 10.4.1 to install if you were that worried.
The number of really stupid little bugs is just too much... Apple rushed on getting the realease out it seems and QA went down the drain.

So far this OS release is a desaster! Most of us are tech savvy people, but did you think about all the people who are just "dumb users"? They bought a mac because it was supposed to be easy to use... What do you think they will do when this and that doesn't work anymore? This is really embarassing for Apple...
