The only thing I was hoping was an update in iChat. The only thing I don't like about it is the look. Too boxy and not the customizable. I've been using Adium, but I can't transfer files through it.

I really can't wait until the new Mail -- the current one sucks big time.

do you remember steve showing off dictionary at MWSF? dictionary support is now built in.

I thought it was a Dashboard widget. The screenshot shows a standalone app.

When I saw the webcast of the Keynote, I was surprised by the speed of all this searching. (I implicitly assumed it was consulting a dictionary server on the web, just like OmniDictionary.app. ) Now I suppose the widget uses the same engine for the Dictionary.app.

As for me Japanese struggling to speak English, I use Eijiro Mini a lot.

Edit:
I found Apple's Dashboard Page says now the thesaurus and dict are now built in. Umm... Did Steve demo the standalone Dictionary.app ? I didn't notice that !

In March

If I were to guess,
I would say Tiger will be released on March 18.
This is just a guess but I might be right ya never know.

It's interesting that the copyright notices say 2004, not 2005. The iChat AV copyright notice is even stranger. It says 2002-2003 (for Version 3.0), when the current version 2.1 has copyright 2002-2004.

I noticed the same thing. It made me wonder if the shots were fake - don't see any reason for them to be or if it is just one of the last things that will be changed?

Anyway I am excited for Tiger. Mostly for Quicktime 7 and H.264 which should pave the way for a start to finish solution of HD video. Here is to hoping that by the end of the year we will have a Powermac with a Blue Laser something drive in it. I also hope that Tiger has a lot of optimization for the G5 chip.

All those moaning about the original server being offline (509 Bandwidth Limit Exceeded) you might care to notice that someone has already kindly provided a mirror.

As for the screenshots - A little bit dull if you ask me, nothing new to see. Here are some things that would get me excited if Apple announced they were to put them in 10.4:

* Further improved speed and responsiveness. Try as you might you cannot load the system so much that opening a menu or clicking an icon takes forever. (Apple demo's this by opening 50 Applications simultaneously, whilst encoding HD video in the background - Menu's and all UI actions are INSTANT)

* Safari has a new browse mode "Pure". Using this mode there are no buttens or tools visible when browsing. A floating window (like the volume up down one) appears with the Page Status during loading. A very minimalist way of viewing the web but highly enjoyable.

I could probably think of a zillion others interesting things Apple could do.

Does the new iChat feature a profile, tabs, a log viewer, or the ability to set the refresh time of your buddy list?

Dictionary.app

Several points I noticed:

  • What's Dictionary.app ? Has any rumor site mentioned this ?

  • I saw the dictionary.app on the tiger systems at macworld. The apple rep told me that a simple dictionary is one of their most requested features, so they included it built into the system. I think it is websters dictionary if I remembered correctly. Looks a lot like omnidictionary, except I think the dictionary is local, not from the internet. There wasn't much to it when the rep showed it to me.

Looks nice.

It looks like the original indexing process for Spotlight takes a good bit of time.

I assume the OS automatically indexes files as they are added after that.
