Just to end the speculation regarding Tiger's pricing.

Mac OS X version 10.4 “Tiger” will be available in the first half of 2005 through the Apple Store®, at Apple’s retail stores and through Apple Authorized Resellers for a suggested retail price of $129 (US).

From Apple's own initial post-WWDC press release.

Good to see, but that statement was made almost a year before the shipping of Tiger. Given the increase in iLife 06, could they just say "opps, Tiger is so great and took much more to develope that we have to charge $149"?

Version numbers in the latest screenshots:

iSync 2.0 (56)
Network Dianostics 1.0 (23)
Preview 3.0 (330)
QuickTime Player 7.0 (7.0)
QuickTime 7.0.0
Safari 2.0 (178)
Stickies 5.0.0 (5.0.0)
TextEdit 1.4 (217)
VoiceOver Utility 1.0 (1.0)

I noticed that QuickTime Player 7 shows the word PRO next to menu choices that work only if you pay for a QuickTime Pro upgrade. Those little labels staring you in the face are likely to inform AND annoy people who use the player and don't know what QuickTime Pro gets you. And they might help Apple sell a few more upgrades, which seems likely to be the reason Apple added them.

I wonder if Apple will put a preference in that hides all the QuickTime Pro-related stuff...or if they're too upsell-oriented to do that...

I mentioned/noticed that in my last post. :p Read more carefully ;)

Damn. Unless Pro has some really neat new features I dont think I will bother this time round to upgrade. $30US iirc it will be for one year of few benefits for me...

I think that getting the QuickTime Pro is well worth the price of $29.95. Enjoy being to download and save the movies.

I'm with wdlove here. I like QuickTime Pro very much. Unfortunately, I've misplaced the printout of my software key...but I can simply retrieve it from Apple's order page, so all hope is not lost.

Yes, sorry, I see it now.

You seem to think it is a good feature. I'm not sure I like it. I pay for QuckTime Pro on my main Mac at home, but not on my Mac at work. Either way, I expect that the PRO labels will feel like clutter in my menus.

See this is my problem, $30USD for which downloading movies (only some mind you not streaming ones like the last few keynotes still are as well as various Apple help files) is allot of money for not much for me.

I tend to watch movie previews once anyway, so no need to keep them.

I use iMovie for editing, so no need for pro for that...

Why did this guy try and hide his identity? He sent a timestamped bug report to Apple in the screenshots. All they have to do is look for that particular error with that timestap and he's busted.

Hell, you didn't even need to know that. l.masi@mac.com ...Luigi Masi...

Check .Mac Sysprefs screenshots for more info. :D

I thought iSync was being eliminated in favour of the new Sync engine? But now it's jumped to version 2? I never really was too big a fan of iSync - it feels clunky and sharewareish, but I guess if it gets a bit of an overhaul before release, I can understand its convenience.
Stickies has also jumped to version 5 with no new features visible (everything shown is in Stickies 4). I thought the Dashboard stickies would take over, but apparently not. Nice to know you still have the option, but why the new version number? Hints of more to come?

Secure VM

The screenshot of System Preferences for Security reveals that Apple has now added an option, "Use secure virtual memory." I found this interesting because many people complained that while Apple added the ability to encrypt one's home directory and whatnot, it was (And remains) possible for someone with root access to simply grep the virtual memory files for a person's password.

This is definitely good news for paranoid business and persons everywhere.

This build (8A351) indicates that Tiger is still in Alpha, so I don't think we can say anything for sure yet. It's been suggested that this is probably the last and the next external release will be in the Beta cycle, but no one knows for sure.

No it doesn't. The build numbers work like this:

8 - Major version
A - Branch
351 - Minor version

8 corresponds to Tiger (Darwin 8.0).
A is the first branch of Darwin 8.0. Forthcoming branches will be called B, C, D, etc.
351 is the current build number (minor version) in branch 8A. New builds get higher numbers. When the branch or major version changes, the minor version (build number) is reset to 1.

What does the screenshot for TextEdit look like now? I couldn't downloa the screenshots on my dialup connection.

To boil this down, we are still on track for June WWDC? Does it show any indication of being ready earlier?

It appears that we're on track for a release of Tiger no later than WWDC 2005 - that's pretty much all that is known at this point.

Does the Spotlight blue color remind anyone else of windows XP?
It just looks like a start button in the corner of the menu bar.

No, it doesn't. Aqua blue is lickable. Windows XP blue is Fisher-Price.

I am currently a windows user, so i was able to look at the color of XP versus the color of the spotlight screenshot...the two colors look very similar to me, and even more similar when i look at my LCD at a weird angle ;) . But i also agree with dotmike, because everything on apple's interface is beautiful and i know im not the only one to think that :D .

I am waiting for Tiger to come out and then i plan on buying an apple computer to replace my toshiba piece of junk.

Is an iBook G4 a good choice?

i have a new 12 inch ibook from my school its great for everything except gaming but even then MoHAA and UT2004 run good but a hard core gamer would hate it
photoshop is quick and so if macromedia studio mx2004
so depending on your needs its a nice machine

A lot depends on what you plan on doing with the iBook. Your budget also needs to be considered. What type of budget are your working with, try to get the best that you can afford?

If i wait long enough eventually i can save enough to buy something more expensive than an iBook, but so far the iBook is looking good to me. When you say that it depends on what im doing with it, what sorts of things wouldnt u reccomend it for?

What interests do you have? The things that can be done on a Mac is almost limitless. Are you into music, photo's, or movies? If an iBook is all that you can afford, then it's a great place to start.
