If I pay for an expensive Mac I expect it to last a long time, i.e. not to become obsolete in a short time because technology moves on.

But it does... didn't you mention that you are still using System 8.6 on your Mac...When did you get that Mac ... 96-97?? If you are happy with your machine and OS no one force you the upgrade... If you want the latest and greatest then you have to and it comes with a price tag.

Weather it's an employee at the plant copying, or some one in shipping, or some realtor.
So according to you, elements within the real estate industry are out to sabotage Apple.

But on the positive side, 10 days is a good time to discover bugs. By the time I get my copy, I'd have read about all the 10.4.0 bugs discovered in the wild and I'd be far more informed of what compatibility issues I would face. It may very well hold me off and wait for 10.4.1.

For my conspiracy theory, it kind of makes sense for Apple to secretly leak these releases to better protect their paying customers. If there really was a big big boo boo that wasn't discovered through the beta testing program, Apple will know early and without any liabilities to those pirates. In a way, thank you you pirates out there. Send in your bug reports! :D
If Apple needed to expand their beta testing program they would do it. What you suggest is far too risky.

As for MrSmith's contention that Apple's OS upgrades should always be free since we pay for the Apple hardware anyhow, which come with an OS installed: the implications are that OS development would slow down greatly or updates would (logically) be limited to running ONLY on the latest and greatest, current hardware. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

OS development would slow down because there'd be that much less incentive for Apple to improve. Developing the OS isn't cheap and it isn't free. You don't get the OS for free with your hardware purchase. The software cost is built into the harware.

Since a few people here claim Apple makes its money on hardware and pirating the OS doesn't hurt, well by that way of thinking the latest OS upgrades should only run on the latest hardware.

You paid for the OS that came installed when you bought your Mac. You didn't pay for future upgrades, unless you bought a maintenance contract.

I'm surprised that Apple legal hasn't closed down something so blatantly illegal. I personally would download an illegal copy. Will admit that when Napster first came out, curiosity caused me to take a look. Only looked once because it seemed that it took more programing knowledge than I had to negotiate the site. I'm sure that something illegal is made increasingly difficult so that many users can't without knowledge of work arounds.

what do you think apple can really do about it? they don't have a magical "stop" button on all illegal apple downloads. honestly, i think it would take months for them to legally do something about it.

Are you trying to say that Tiger comes free with Apple Care?? I wasn't aware of that. Confirmation anyone?

You are forced to upgrade though because the software becomes obsolete. Try using the internet on OS 7, 8 or 9. It just doesn't work anymore, as in many pages will not load and apple doesn't offer fixes for problems with an old OS = obsolete.
This is a huge problem when schools can't afford to upgrade computers or software, they are left with rooms full of working computers that are essentially useless junk (and most of them are Macs).

i'm surprised people are still poking along with torrent or limewire or some crap like that? please... go learn how to usenet.

here's some info on newsgroups/usenet

Heavens! Usenet is almost as old as the internet. It's one of the earliest "feature" implementation. BT and Limewire are very very new in comparison.

That's why I said that was a conspiracy theory.

How does one go about accessing Usenet?

Easy

Easy! Download a client or use a built-in client that's already in one of your apps (eg. Entourage). Good clients include MT-Newswatcher, Thoth (discontinued and some would object), Unison, OSXnews. Just go and search for Usenet on Macupdate.com.

Then it's a matter of entering the correct of news server address, create an ID, various other application preferences and your pretty much ready to go. Most likely you'll access your ISP's usenet server.

Or just read the other thread.

where the torrent is being downloaded they have the official list of software that doesnt work in Tiger already....

here is the list so far..

Littlesnitch
Stuffit (reinstall required to fix it)
Freeway Pro
The Official Bittorrent Client 4.0.1
Carbon Copy Cloner
Brickhouse

Come on now... don't tell me that you want Apple to keep up to date technology of the beginning or mid 90s to work in 2005. Have you tried to run anything with 286 or 386 or even a Pentium with Windows 3.1? I don't even know if there is IE :D

As for school budget stuff it's another story. At my son school it's that PTA that paid for a brand new computer lab with eMac by doing fund raising year round. While other school in the same district have like you said room full of junk.

But the Majors nor the Film industry cannot know what you are downloading. :D

what a load of horse****.

it's no different anywhere. productivity software is expensive. i'm in the US, but ms office is expensive here too. it doesn't justify piracy. i know it happens, but -i'm- not complacent about it. and i don't do it.

and as has been pointed out, this will be out in a few days now. i already pre-ordered it at a discount from amazon, i couldn't imagine wanting to use a pirated OS of all things. seems stupid.
No, it's not alot of horse****!
Let me compare some prices to you:

Office 2004 for Mac - Professional Edition
USA - $449
Norway - $1008

Dual G5
USA - $2999
Norway - $4333

The normal sallery for a man in Norway is $50'000 before tax. After tax all you got is $36'166.

How on earth is that fair? I can see why a G5 is more expencive.. you have to get it to norway, but downloading 500MB of software should be the same price nomather where you are!

I downloaded the GM at work yesterday.... I didn't care to wait! We will buy it anyway.

OS 9 aint that old! Windows 2000 kicks OS 9's ass!! and it still work like a charm! Sometimes even better than XP

Just got done downloading Tiger via torrent file found on some German website. It's late now, (download took ~18 hours) so I'll install onto my 667 PB G4 as a test tomorrow. In case you're wondering, I've already ordered Tiger for my G5 and am installing the pirated version strictly on my laptop (the "just for fun" computer) as an experiment. Why? Cuz I'm a jackass, and I like doing this kind of stuff.

I'll let you all know if it works. Apparently it must be a good copy, there were 55 peers at my peak downloading time - I can't imagine a bad copy would have that many people near me continuing to allow the file to be distributed (torrent folks are usually pretty good about that kind of stuff)

Good night!

that holds for me

The funny part is that most of the downloaders are people who already pre-ordered Tiger and just can't Wait 10 days to get there copy, at least thats what have been told by quite a few...

I've ordered a family pack, but I can't wait to start using tiger, so one if I can get a hold on the GM before that...

Yep, that's the kicker. And I just read that comcast has released names and addresses to the RIAA of their biggest offenders... not usenet users though ;)

But, if you want to get off BT or Limewire, the best thing is to go to easynews and signup for their commercial servers. they take the outdated-ness (nice word huh?) out of usenet with their global search, par viewer (grabs all the needed file parts for you) and the auto file builder, which actually builds the file for you to download... very cool

no waiting for enough people to share one file and looking for more sources.. just download. took me all of about an hour to download -- even less time than it actually took to install! -- why is that? tiger was a very slow install!

good luck

18 hours!?! ouch!

A friend of mine downloaded Tiger off one of those torrent sites and noticed it didn't come with Xcode2, which is a huge problem because he does development work. It has all the Xcode2 SDKs included, but not the actual program or compilers. We had a good chuckle abou it.

Did he run the Xcode 2 installer from the folder on the DVD...? It's there.

Proves Think Secret is not a fansite (which I consider Macrumors).

They will publish anything to peak curiousityand therefore hurting Apple in any way possible - hiding behind 1st ammendment whining and lawyers that openly hate Apple.

Yea, I saw the file there on the disc he showed me. He had said that it was just an installer for the extra SDKs, not the program itself. Maybe he was wrong, I don't know. Have you installed it? That would give us even more of a reason to make fun!

Peak curiousity? Is that like, when your curiousity is at a really high level? :D

I'd go on, but I don't wanna pique too soon.
