I definitely remember something about developers getting GM releases for free. I just wasn't sure if they seed it on the ADC site or send out DVD's.
That makes sense - of course 🙄 they're going to have to start writing software for it after all. I'm just so caught up in my selfish obsession to get my grubby mitts on a copy that i can't see past my local Micro Anvika....

Interesting. Another Wikipedia article claims the IBM AS/400 was the first 64 process and operating system. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AS400 I guess it comes down to definitions. The DEC CPU certainly predates the AS/400 one (1995). But then the AS/400 and System/38 before it have had 128 bit pointers since around 1981 or so.

Actually, the System/38 and AS/400, iSeries, etc. have 16 byte pointers.

Thinking back, the original System/38 virtual hardware was a 256-bit machine and by the time the AS/400 was making the switch to RISC hardware, they were on a 448-bit virtual machine.

The AS/400 was the first commercial machine to make full use of a 64-bit processor, due to the nature of the operating system's hardware ignorance. (Ignorance can be a good thing.)

I believe a more accurate term is "hardware-agnostic". Anyway, what you mention is interesting. I'm 2 steps away from being convinced that Apple will release Tiger on April 15th. Those two steps are an acknowledgement on the Apple front page and a countdown on Apple's Mac OS X page. I just checked the Apple site - there's nothing yet.

I agree. If Apple doesn't post by 9AM, there won't be anything for that day.

It's already been officially announced--APRIL 15th!!!

Along with Tiger Woods being named an offical Mac OS X Tiger spokesperson:

http://macdailynews.com/index.php/w...ods_signs_long_term_deal_with_apple_computer/

"Mac OS X version 10.4 "Tiger" will be available on Friday, April 15, 2005 beginning at 8:00 p.m. through the Apple Store®, at Apple’s retail stores and through Apple Authorized Resellers for a suggested retail price of $129 (US). Users with a .Mac membership can take full advantage of all the innovative new features in Tiger to synchronize their information between multiple Macs. More information on Tiger can be found at http://www.apple.com/macosx/tiger/"

Mac Friends,

This is awful. We waited and wasited, and then nothing. 🙁 It reminds me of the two or three Tuesdays I waited for the new Powerbooks, and they ended up coming on a Monday. haha.

I had wanted to see big news on Tiger today.

This is just a joke. When I first came across this article, they forgot to change date from the real press release they used to create this fake press release. It was dated January 14, 2004.

NOTHING!!!

I am so bummed. I keep checking this and Apple every 15 min or so, still clinging to the hope that the page will change.....ho hum. 🙁

I do believe that when Panther was launched, we waited until 6pm EST before the web site changed and it was announced. But it is torture. I'm 36 years old and I haven't been this excited since I was waiting for my Atari 2600.

I could see Apple delaying announcement until tomorrow just to prove the rumor-folks wrong. Afterall, Apple seems to be having less-than-perfect relationships with rumormongers lately....

Maybe...

...Apple will release it at 10:40 PM? That would be funny! Maybe? OK, I am taking a shot in the dark in hopes that I can tell everyone they can finally order Macs! Well, I probably will tell them to continue waiting for the updated models rumored to be coming out soon... LOL! I am still waiting for better PowerBooks! -JB

I read the report that Tiger had gone Gold Master. Maybe Apple is pulling an April Fool on us. All this buildup again, and now the let down. 🙁

Well, honestly, it doesn't matter to me when they announce it. It's when it's going to be available that matters. Maybe they're gonna announce it Tuesday.

One thing seems to be for sure: Tiger has gone gold, now it's just a matter of when it's announced and in stores. I've been saying all along the end of April, and I still think that's when we'll see it.

In my particular case the release needs to occur before April 26th or after June 11th. I want to be able to enjoy the release party. A great time was had by all at the release party with Panther on the 24h.

What about 10.4 Server?

I really doubt that Apple is letting the rumor sites drive their decisions. There are far more important reasons for choosing or adjusting the release date. For instance, even if 10.4 gold master exists, would they announce it without having 10.4 Server ready to go as well?

Send it in to http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/. They do listen. 🙂

I have a feeling you will be enjoying Tiger before April 26. At least, let's hope.

Internal GMs have been pulled before by Apple. Thus, we can't be absolutely certain that OS X 10.4 is actually done. In fact, even if they have declared Tiger GM (internally) they may wait until they've started the disc duplication stage before they make any announcement concerning a ship date (i.e. they'll still be testing and potentially finding new bugs).

Since it now seems too late for an announcement from Apple, I'd say that either the April 1st rumors were wrong or Apple is having second thoughts about their GM (which, in itself is only a rumor). In any case, it's still just rumors about rumors, and we won't really know until the Tiger retail boxes are in our hot little hands.

I think we'll have Tiger in our hands by April 15. I imagine they will tell us this, by some time next week. Of course, I'm only *hoping*, but my gut makes me want to believe!

I agree-as I predict Apple might announce the release date next week (for better coverage by the press).
