System Requirements

Does anybody know what the system requirements for Tiger are?

I'm guessing G3 256 MB RAM....correct?

I agree-as I predict Apple might announce the release date next week (for better coverage by the press).

Yes, I think this announce date they always had the ability to play with. Overall, the announce date shouldn't hurt our ship date :)

Free to OSX users

now that tiger is ready would the mac Mini 80GB spec be ok for it to work i find it at 256 ram not the quickist little box to react. will Mac OS X Tiger Be free to panter users or do we but it

Your Mac mini should run Tiger just fine. You will definitely need to purchase Tiger - the only reason Mac OS X 10.1 was free was because version 10.0 wasn't really ready for the world to use. Mac OS X 10.1 was ready, although it lacked the polish 10.2, 10.3, and now 10.4 have.

First, does anyone know how much space Tiger will take up? I have a 600 iBook G3 with 384 MB of RAM, but i only have 1.5 GB of hard drive space left. If Tiger won't work, is there some way to kind of "clean up" my mac? :)

Second, I think Thinksecret had their dates right, just what goes on on them wrong. On the first of April, Tiger goes GM, 15th, Apple anounces Tiger, and then, maybe on the 24th Tiger comes out.

When you install Tiger, you can remove the old OS so you will have enough space. That being said, there are lots of things you can do to free up space. Most of us have apps on our computers that are never used and can be trashed. You can remove all the language localization files are free up space there. Try using this:

I still think we'll hear some important news as early as next Tuesday April 5th when Apple shows their wares at next weeks' Washington D.C. FOSE
convention.

My gut feeling tells me that all Apple displays will be pre-loaded with
Tiger.

I will be very interested to see how Apple answers to keynotes by
Intel and Dell and major competition from Red Hat Linux.

I can also easily imagine a " special government issue " software bundle including optional iLife'05, iWork (pro?) and Microsoft Office, thus promoting large scale deployments of Mac mini and education style iMacs.
XServe & Tiger licensing should also play a major role in overall cost considerations.

Those IT buyers wil be forced to make tough decisions betting on
Microsoft Longhorn and Microsoft Server 2003 or going with something that works NOW!

The MotherShip could be heading for an iceburg.

Does Apple have anything official scheduled at NAB? Will they be making a large presence?

I recommend everyone do this if you only use one language. I freed up almost 2 gigs by just having english.

I just used it, of course I saved the Icelandic localization resources because you just never know about that, better safe then sorry, I saved786MB.

Evidence to Support April 14th Release Date

Just another thing I've noticed which would tend to support an April 14th Release Date. I work with an Indirect Reseller (i.e. we have to buy everything from a distributor rather than directly from Apple) and anything that isnt in stock at the distributor's just now (which is basically, iBooks and PowerBooks only) is on backorder until..... April 15th.

This is significantly longer than the usual 3-4 day backlog we see which would imply there's some reason Apple are holding out on shipping these machines until the 15th? perhaps they're going to be pre-installed with 10.4 (that's the current best speculation), or they'll have "drop-ins" but there's no decent reason otherwise for why it might take so long to get a box of iBooks... also, it's a remarkable coincidence that it's the date that's been rumored for so long now.

Just my 0.02

They seem to have two "special events" planned for NAB. One on the 17th for "new Apple technology" and a second one later on for developers.

Well, your 2 cents sounds more credible than some of the straws people have been clutching at for the past week... we'll just have to wait and see.

Nice post. :)

i noticed that the 12" pb ship dates have gone from 24h to 6 days on the apple website - its my specualtion that these machines will have their videocards upgraded from fx5200 (to 9700 like the others?) , and that the ibooks will all receive the fx5200. Of course the ibooks are all 24h dispatch still.....so i could be (probably ) very wrong

If I do this, could I reinstall them if I needed them? Could I just stick the OS X Installer CD and re install them if I needed them? (I don't think I'll need them really)

Oh ya... in the DeLocalizer app thing, what are the languages like sk, ru, zh_TW, and all the others?????? Should I delete those? And Do I really need to keep the GB English and the Australian English?
Sorry for all the questions.. :)

This doesn't make a lot of sense to me. This Powerbook came out just two months ago. Surely, Apple would have known what they had planned for the iBooks at that time. I can't see them changing the Powerbook this quickly, but your speculation is still interesting. Wow. If they do this, I will sell my brand-new Pbook, for the new one. haha.

I can't remember where I read it but I read somewhere that the 12"PB delays were to do with Apple acknowledging a problem with the new scrolling trackpads. The article claimed this problem affects the 12" model more than the 15" or 17"

Yeah, just do a select all and it will erase everything except English if that is what you want to be left with. That's what I always do.

Welcome to the Mac.

G3, Built in FireWire, 128 MB of RAM.
Now, if you don't want to die waiting for anything to do anything...
G3 800 MHz with 512 MB of RAM of a G4 600 MHz with 512 MB of RAM

The recommendations are my guesses, BTW. The minimum I'm pretty sure is correct.

Do you think every 12-inch Powerbook had this problem and it only bothers some people, or are some ok? I've had mine, for seven weeks now, and it is perfect. :)

Oddly enough, some 12 inch PowerBook owners are reporting no trouble at all, like you. You're not the only one without problems.
