I am just grateful Apple is allowing the upgrade from Tiger to Leopard, regardless of the "Tiger users need to spend $169" line that I was hearing to date.

"Grateful Apple is allowing the upgrade from Tiger to Leopard"???

They aren't doing any such thing. Read the the license agreement. It says you can upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard with the low-cost "upgrade" packs. Tiger users must buy the more expensive "full version" packs (with basically free extra software).

Why should some people pay for Leopard and then Snow Leopard, while the selfish greedy scum skip paying for Leopard? In reality these selfish and greedy scum will as usual use the "upgrade" disc to install from Tiger to Snow Leopard and / or install on multiple Macs simply because the discs don't specifically stop them from doing so. It's called piracy. And then these same greedy morons will later wonder why Apple either doesn't bother to make Mac OS X 10.7 at all, or charges $1,500 for it, or makes you jump through convulted "authentication" loops to legally install it.

You can go out a steal a brand new car for free, rob a bank at gun point, kick small children and animals, etc., etc. ... doesn't mean you actually should do it. Use your brains for a change rather than selfishness!

Common sense and common decency - two things that are extremely uncommon and virtually extinct in the human race, especially on the Internet. :(

Calm down there tough guy, as long as YOU do the right thing, that should be all that matters to you, don't worry about what other people are doing, by the looks of it, if you do, you may have a heart attack. So just relax.

I don't understand why people are complaining about paying $179 (now $149.99). iWork & iLife both retail for $79 each right? I know some will say they don't need those but some folks still on Tiger would like to see the newer iLife apps.
I bought iWork at the beginning of the year. I don't want iLife 09 as I am satisfied with iPhoto 06, which I still use and have no reason to upgrade. Why should I be happy about paying an additional $140 for things that make no difference. The box set is an alright deal if you need more than one item in the box; only one = total waste of money.

Apple, you rock!

I guess Apple's willing to accept the piracy in order to keep on everyone's good side. It's not that costly, really, if you assume that most of the people interested in upgrading from Tiger in the first place have already upgraded to Leopard anyway.

The only people who can take advantage of this are very patient pirates.

Meanwhile, this is a nice convenience for the rest of us.

You should not be happy and probably is a waste of money for folks in the same position as yourself. I'm guessing that not many are in the same boat as yourself. I guess it I never thought iWork or iLife were offered at attractive pricing to purchase alone.

So, what are you going to do? Buy the $29 "upgrade" version or the box version? Just curious.

Cheers,
Mike

The Snow Leopard Reviews Begin Rolling Out news story made the same point.
One of the most interesting tidbits comes from Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal, who reports that the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade advertised by Apple as being only for current Leopard users will in fact install on systems currently running Tiger. Apple's official policy is that Tiger users are required to purchase the Mac Box Set, which includes iLife '09 and iWork '09 in addition to Snow Leopard, for $169.

See the review quote in the message above, see Apple's website, see the license agreement in the box, ... pretending ignorance is no defence. You meant to read these details before installing the software. If you can't agree, don't install it.

Again, why should those who paid for Leopard lose out to greedy scum who can't be bothered?? If you want Leopard or Snow Leopard, you should pay properly like they did, not circumvent the system for your own purely selfish greed.

Continued piracy hurts everyone. Greedy scum who continue to avoid this because they simply selfish leads us to the no software, higher priced software, cumbersome "authentication" systems, etc.

I think that if Apple had offered a full upgrade from Tiger at a fair price, everyone you're mad at here would have gladly paid it. The problem is, those who already own the two "extras" included in the box set resent being asked to pay for them again, and frankly I understand their frustration. It's borderline unethical for Apple to structure their prices in this way.

In essence, your argument appears to be: Snow Leopard is based off Leopard, so all users should have to pay for Leopard AND Snow Leopard. By this logic, users who skipped Tiger should have been made to pay for Tiger AND Leopard (an OS based off Tiger) when the upgraded from Panther to Leopard.

A little off topic, but is it true that you can buy the single user and use it on as many computers as you want?

Thanks for the help!

There's one thing I don't think people understand. You can't upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard. You can go into disk utility and format your main drive and install Snow Leopard that way. But then you are going to have to redo your entire computer. The only way to install Snow Leopard from Tiger is to do a fresh install.

Yes, technically you can. It just goes against the EULA, and it's morally wrong.

So, what are you going to do? Buy the $29 "upgrade" version or the box version? Just curious.
Yes, I am going to purchase the standalone upgrade. It's not really about the price, - had it been CHF 139 again, I still would have purchased it for general app compatibility - rather more about me not wanting to spend money on something which I already own. I still have a copy of 10.5 on my G5, so if anyone wants to get all technical I guess that I could revert that back to 10.3 or 10.4, but I am not going to throw CHF 180 more at something that I don't need nor want.

Only if you are dishonest. And if you are dishonest, you could always get any MacOS X version for less than $29. If you are honest, you can get iLife, iWork and Snow Leopard for not much more than Leopard.

I can't understand your thinking. So you are basically saying that by relying on the honesty of its customers "Apple is screwing you all over". Here is what Apple has done: Honest Leopard users can get Snow Leopard at an excellent price. Honest Leopard users can do a "fresh install" which many want, and they can install Snow Leopard on a brand new hard drive if their old drive crashes or when they replace their hard drive with a bigger one. Honest Tiger users can get Leopard + Snow Leopard Upgrade + iWork + iLife for $169, which is just $40 for than Leopard and just $11 more than Leopard + Snow Leopard Upgrade. Dishonest users can be dishonest. So you are saying this is "screwing you all over", and if Apple prevented dishonest users from being dishonest, it wouldn't?

Jesus, this has to be a record for one word appearing repeatedly in one post. Obsessed with honesty? :) What I'm saying is that people seem to be mad at Tiger users for not paying $169 to upgrade when they don't have to. And the reason they don't have to is that Apple is allowing them to upgrade for the same price as everyone else - $29. The "outrage" shouldn't be with Tiger users who are going to pay $29 to skip over Leopard and go straight to Snow Leopard - it should be with the company that allows them to do so. And who can blame them? I sure as hell wouldn't pay $169, or $129 + another $29 just so some anonymous Leopard users will think I'm "honest". Apple's allowing them to move to SL for a mere $29, and they'd be a fool to spend a dime more than that just to uphold some abstract code of honor.

Damn, all this over an operating system?

Exactly what are you "losing out" to? It's not like Tiger users are coming to snatch $129 from your pocket on their way to upgrading their systems. And circumvent what system? Apple is ALLOWING this to happen. If they were so concerned about Tiger users, they would have put something in place that required a copy of Leopard before installing Snow Leopard. Not to mention them telling Mossberg explicitly that Tiger users could upgrade directly to Snow Leopard. Obviously, you care far more about this issue than the company that actually has a financial take in all of this, which doesn't make a lot of sense. You're vigorously defending a position that Apple themselves apparently have no interest in taking.

Personally I'm not mad that I paid $129 for Leopard in October 2007. I think using it for almost 2 years was worth it.

whos stealing anything? are you saying some people shouldnt be ableto walk in and buy a stand alone product as that's exactly what they are doing

do you realize how silly your post is?

yes, youre right, common sense and decency are in need as theyre missing from your post

If you don't like their policy the remedy is not to steal it.
