Were Apple fans. I love all my Apple products, but I am now done with this company that is trying to sue there way into a monopoly. I will keep what I have, but will not be purchasing anything new from them. I know I will get negative comments since I didn't give Apple praise, and the faithful do not look past the :apple: symbol.

Apple is suing, not to become a monopoly (which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing and certainly not illegal to be one) but because they were wronged. As someone who went from iPhone to Android, I can tell you that I was shocked at the similarities between the two platforms so it came as no surprise that Apple started suing these companies.

I can tell you one thing... by supporting the copycats, you're only inviting stagnancy in the tech industry. You only need to look at the PC landscape to see where the Android OEMs are headed. That's why I switched back to iPhone when the 4S was released; Android didn't offer a significantly different experience and the UX wasn't as good. Oh yeah, and I got screwed and never got an update for my Desire... and this was considered to be like the Nexus, only better.

A lack of diplomatic language there from Tim. He's right, but the tone is rather aggressive. Suggests there is more to come from Apple on this.

Wonder if Tim also thinks Apple was "willful" when it sold the new iPad as 4G but knew it actually wasn't 4G in most of the countries it was selling it in.

Still gets me that 1 Apple store and 1 Apple reseller both assured me that the iPad 4G would be compatible with 4G in the UK.

It's about "values", eh, Tim?

Tell me one thing: you were "shocked by the similarities", but how on Earth did you come with the conclusion that Android stole from iPhone? Isn't that naive?

There are many things which were introduced on the Android platform and then introduced in iOS. There are many things that existed before the realse of iPhone and Android phones, and both platforms use those elements.

Apple is suing to achieve monopoly. They are using a "pitch to zoom" patent for crying out loud! There is no excuse. Don't believe their marketing talk.

I hope there are more people like you and fewer blind Apple followers.

It's a victory for innovators. Android manufacturers who pay up, or innovate differently should be fine. This law suit doesn't mean Android is doomed. It just means you need to license the relevant technologies from Apple (and MS).

That's exactly my point. Some manufacturers will be safe. To me it's just common courtesy to ask before copying something. Apple even licensed some of the patents involved in this case to Microsoft for their upcoming tablet... If Samsung had just asked nicely, I doubt any of this would have happened.

Samsung can always put the prices of their CPUs up to pay for it, I am sure that their customers will understand, oh hang on,
I have never read so much dumb ass as here, lines such as apple should buy Samsung, yeah right you do realise just how big Samsung is, 1 billion is 25% of q4 profit,
Samsung are the world leaders at component manufacturing and apple have just pissed them of, If I was samsung I would slow up them production lines for CPUs for iPhone 5, sweet karma for a low move from apple. Not a popular opinion around here I know, but it needs to be said,
Also don't forget this also applies to only the US, there is the rest of the world where this ******** will not get a look in!!!
Precisely. Apple now needs to make sure that LG is capable of producing good retina screens for their iPads now that Samsung will probably not do that for them (cause, you know, Samsung were the ones who "invented" iPad's retina screens), but judging from the multiple negative comments about MacBook's retina screen problems, they now need to think twice.

Apple sued Samsung over a rectangle with rounded corners, a pitch to zoom patent (a gesture that was around for 40 years!) and other pathetic patents.

That's what Samsung wanted people to believe, but they weren't able to convince the jurors.

Apparently, it's more than that (e.g., How Apple prevent the touchscreen from misfiring when our face come in contact with the screen when answering phone calls). It's not just the shape.

If the pinch to zoom gesture were around for 40 years, then why didn't other companies use it ? There were probably mass production gaps and issues to solve to fit into a small form factor. Apple has to put together the entire consumer system, and package the software. The pinch to zoom gesture fits into the overall user experience.

Samsung came along and put Android in without much thought. They thought they only needed to shoo MS away even though the latter didn't really contribute directly to multi-touch smartphones then. Should have paid Apple and fight MS for example.

Its pretty sad reading how people are flipping out over Apple becoming the next monopoly.

Samsung have the largest market share
Apple has had to graft almost exactly the same licensing deals with Nokia... Did that stifle innovation???

In short, get over yourselves.

It's a LOSS for innovators.

This just proves that if you innovate and cause a threat to Apple, they will find some stupid patent (like "pinch to zoom") and get you. Sue you. Crush you.

If there's something worth stealing, they probably will license, buy, or innovate differently.
Give me a break. Not that "Android steals, Apple innovates" bullcrap again.

It's always good to have multiple suppliers. Even if Apple and Samsung are on good terms, it's best practice to multi-source your components to avoid getting screwed. The technical challenges can always be worked around. How ? LG can hire the people away.

I hope there are less people like you and more people who believe in the patent system and protecting the integrity of innovation in the US.

What's there to "believe"? It's a fact. This gesture was around for 40 years, it's basic, it's simple, it's trivial, it's natural, Apple patented it.

Apparently, it's more than that (e.g., How Apple prevent the touchscreen from misfiring when our face come in contact with the screen when answering phone calls). It's not just the shape.
That's another trivial patent. Samsung did not use the same technique as Apple did to prevent "misfiring".

There were companies using it. In fact, most multi-touch screens used it.

Haha, say what again?

You mean the insanely flawed and corrupt patent system? Yeah that sounds like something worth protecting.

Too bad someone didn't patent round wheels and force everyone else to either pay billions or make square wheels. Cause thats in the essence what apple is doing here, but I guess it's too hard to see that for certain individuals.

They didn't sue Microsoft since the latter came up with the Metro UI and Lumia looks different from iPhone. They also licensed the relevant tech from Apple.

They didn't sue Sony since Xperia tablet S has a distinctive wedge shape, P is foldable, Xperia phones try to build their own visual cues in different ways. Vita also has a completely different OS.

Give me a break. Not that "Android steals, Apple innovates" bullcrap again.

Android is just an open source software. The manufacturers put everything together. They should make sure their parts are "clean", and the final product is unique. That is all.

The US patent system is flawed and I'm not the only person to think that, it is not protecting any innovation but supports patent trolls like Apple. The US patent system, regarding software, is widely criticized by software companies.

And it's "fewer people", work on the integrity of your grammar.

No, it's more of a win. Like I said, there are other methods of running a smartphone or a tablet. Look at WP7 and WebOS. Granted, neither of those have been very successful. The fact of the matter is that they did their own thing and played the game by the rules. And I say this again: If Samsung had just asked nicely, none of this would have happened. Apple isn't above licensing their patents out.

Oh, sorry. Did I add too many "and"s in one sentence for you? Did that turn on the nazi grammar switch? Nothing else to add to argue so time to switch to the good ol' grammar topic, eh? Oops, I did it again.

Edit "Fewer people". Got it. I'll remember that next time, sir. I truly hope there are less people like you in the world.

You mean those paraded in the courtroom ? They were deemed different enough, or sufficient work needed to be done.

Well, I simply disagree.

Just looking at the patents you can tell that they are trivial, and many of them shouldn't have been granted in the first place. Apple is telling innovators that "we have enough money to patent simple things, so you better watch out if your phone has 'swipe to unlock' pal".

The only patent that I can vaguely agree on is the "rubber band" patent, although I still find it trivial, and it has not been infringed in all the latest Samsung smartphones.

You mean they haven't used an icon grid layout that has been around for decades?

If Samsung also thinks Metro is just an icon grid, and iPhone is just a rounded rectangle, then no wonder they got into so much legal troubles, and ended up paying the wrong guy.

Well, Samsung also fling their patents around like every one else. It's a system they willingly participate in. So they shouldn't be surprised if they got hit in the face.

I'm simply correcting you, I'm not using this as an argument.

I hope that you will respond to my actual argument instead of using the "American innovation!" bollocks again.

For some they could be tired of Apples attitude even when they are right to a degree. My issue with their attitude is in part with issues like these, now with You Tube, Google, Adobe Flash, Blu-ray, living too far in the future etc... they also have many strong points of where they have taken tech today. Just feels that we are often reading about an issue Apple has with another company all too often.

YouTube.com works just fine for me. And I'm sure Google will have an app in the AppStore that will be loads better than what's on the iPhone now. :)

Name me a patent used by Samsung in a winning case that was so trivial that it shouldn't have been granted in the first place.

In Apple's case, I can point at most of them.
