Why oh why did Samsung agree to pay Microsoft license fees for Android, and yet refuse to license iPhone technologies when Apple presented them with the opportunity ?

Apple invented today's smartphones, not Microsoft. They should know who to pay first. >_<

Now they have to pay more since they are found to violate the patents willfully.

Hurray for Joy!!!!!!!

we will now pay even more money for apple goodies because of Apple lawsuit victory.

^ This makes very little sense. Apple does NOT have a monopoly on the industry and even if they eventually did... there is a plateau of how much a consumer would be willing to spend on technology. If anything... this would open the market up a bit for Apple to drop a lower priced piece of tech and begin grabbing some of the consumers on the lower end of the market.

this victory against the biggest android handset company will push Google and other android one's to change a lot of things in their handsets and android it self :D
but i will call this the small war that pace big war (against Android).
:apple::apple::apple:

Well said Tim!
Lots of bitter minds today I'm sure.

Were Apple fans. I love all my Apple products, but I am now done with this company that is trying to sue there way into a monopoly. I will keep what I have, but will not be purchasing anything new from them. I know I will get negative comments since I didn't give Apple praise, and the faithful do not look past the :apple: symbol.

Please go away to support thieves as much as you'd like.

This verdict will inspire SO MUCH innovation in the long run and THAT will be healthy for the market, the industry as a whole but most importantly... US. The people who embrace and love new, exciting and innovative technology.

Interesting enough, some other phone manufatures decided not to go Samsung's route and not infringe on Apples patents. They now have quite a few new innovative ways for things such as unlocking the screen and some such.

Samsung will have to pay Apple license fees moving forward. With the additional income from Android imitations, Apple should not need to raise iPhone price.

On Android side, they can't raise their price because people will buy Apple.

The net effect will be Android manufacturers earning less profit. These hardware companies don't invest majorly in the software anyway. Google did so, without ensuring that Android is "clean". So it's natural that someone has to pay the software guys $$$, like Microsoft and Apple.

Who can remind me, What company said good artists copy and great artists steal. Hmmm food for thought. Isn't fun when the tables are turned.

The tables may have been turned, but Apple flipped it.......on Samsungs head.

This is what you call a Royal ars whoopin.

I think LL Cool J can appreciate what Apple did here.

Dam Thieves!!!

This isnt all that new for the company. I remember when Apple sued MS in 95 for having a GUI. Bill's response was great.

"Their meeting was in Jobs’s conference room, where Gates found himself surrounded by ten Apple employees who were eager to watch their boss assail him. Jobs didn’t disappoint his troops. “You’re ripping us off!” he shouted. “I trusted you, and now you’re stealing from us!” Gates just sat there coolly, looking Steve in the eye, before hurling back, in his squeaky voice, what became a classic zinger. “Well, Steve, I think there’s more than one way of looking at it. I think it’s more like we both had this rich neighbor named Xerox and I broke into his house to steal the TV set and found out that you had already stolen it.”

Yap, except that this time round, Microsoft decided to license the relevant technologies from Apple. That should already be a strong hint to Samsung that they are on the wrong track.

Basically, Samsung and Google got played out by Microsoft. Apple fought to win their share while MS played soft to coax Samsung to pay up.

Google didn't really lose much since they acquired Android cheaply. They hoped to sidestep the whole licensing issue by just open sourcing the software and let the hardware guys take the blunt. Samsung is the cannon fodder here.

One BILLION it is petty cash for SAMSUNG...
SAMSUN was founded in 1938 by now the company total assets is $ 384.3 billions that includes all subsidiaries
- SAMSUNG ELECTRONIC
- SAMSUNG LIFE INSURANCE
- SAMSUNG HEAVY INDUSTRIES
- SAMSUNG C&T
- SAMSUNG SDS etc...
If SAMSUNG got the ignorance to copy Apple so blindly at this level imagine what they copy for the other SAMSUNG subsidiaries.:-/ Nothing APPLE can do to shake SAMSUNG...sad that APPLE got only one Billion. :(

I wonder who is next now...GOOGLE:D

Samsung ship a lot of phones. Apple can't cover the entire world anyway. It's good that Samsung now need to pay license fees to Apple for selling phones to segments that Apple don't or can't cover.

If they can't use Motorola patents against Apple then they lost (their money) dearly but that is another matter.

Well, that's because they went ahead to throw their money at meaningless patents, plus Motorola. Android itself is pretty cheap.

If Google had saved those money, and focus on innovating their own service business, they may already have something much more amazing than today. Right now, they are out of the China search market too.

OTOH, Samsung p*ssed off their biggest semiconductor customer, going to lose US$1+ billion, suffer a damage in reputation, continue to pay Microsoft and Apple royalties.

But they are a big boy in Korea (cornering quite a few local markets). So they should be alright.

Tim: "The jury has now spoken. We applaud them for finding Samsung’s behavior willful and for sending a loud and clear message that stealing isn’t right."

Apple has often "stolen" other developers' ideas (the Xerox graphic interface used in the Macintosh computer).

Remember, "good artists copy, great artists steal". Pablo Picasso

Pretty much how I am feeling, Apple is out of Ideas and if they knew they had new products that were going to blow away the competition they wouldn't be worrying about knock off's of their iPhone. This is the same reason they are changing screen size because they need to change something to call it a 5 and sell it.

I used a Xerox SmallTalk machine back in the labs.

The Mac UI is very different from the Xerox UI. It's different from Apple's Lisa UI too. My Computer Science lecturer had one, and I played with it for a while.

Yeah, but the analogy should have been more like: they both had this rich neighbour who Apple paid to borrow his TV set, then MS broke into Apple's house and stole it!

Hopefully not icecream sandwiches, though.

There are many reasons to sue Samsung for copying their technologies.

First and foremost, if Apple don't sue, these people will do it again next time.

While Apple may yet innovate again, it doesn't mean they should let these companies feast on their lunch. Companies like Samsung don't just steal the technologies, in their marketing, they will pretend that they invented these technologies from scratch. They will also market their products aggressively, calling consumers idiots for not buying their products (since it's cheaper, has no R&D cost).

If Samsung agreed to pay Microsoft for Android's infringement, there is zero reason why they can't pay Apple their dues. It just doesn't make sense. If Samsung truly believe that they are right, they should have fought BOTH Microsoft and Apple. For some unknown reason, they decided to pay MS and sue their best customer. What a blunder !

Did anyone bother to check the jury, and wether they owned apple or Samsung products, bet that swayed the vote lol

Yes it was mentioned. One of them had an apple product and if I remember a couple ha Samsung but not smart phone. I may be wrong but that info is widely available actually ;)
