So with the extra 1 Billion will they now be able to treat their retail employees a little better and not cut their hours, lay them off right after training? Maybe not have to make the Foxiconn employees work 16 hour days? Just asking.

They have already improved the working conditions vastly unlike Samsung, Microsoft and other workers in Foxconn ...

Well actually, a jury said, F Samsung :p.

Lmao...

Apple should donate that $1B to charity or research, they certainly dont need it

I don't trust those entities in how they handle money. It has to be something measurable. I would scream if it goes to management/exec fees.

Exactly. Apple does it by licensing from say.. Nuance for Siri. If they like it enough, they will try to buy the entire company. There is little need to reinvent the wheel, or use without paying.

Stealing is used metaphorically. Apple is a public company afterall. Everything has to be accountable.

Samsung can always put the prices of their CPUs up to pay for it, I am sure that their customers will understand, oh hang on,
I have never read so much dumb ass as here, lines such as apple should buy Samsung, yeah right you do realise just how big Samsung is, 1 billion is 25% of q4 profit,
Samsung are the world leaders at component manufacturing and apple have just pissed them of, If I was samsung I would slow up them production lines for CPUs for iPhone 5, sweet karma for a low move from apple. Not a popular opinion around here I know, but it needs to be said,
Also don't forget this also applies to only the US, there is the rest of the world where this ******** will not get a look in!!!

A jury found that Samsung had willfully infringed on both Apple's patents and trade dress for the iPhone and issued a verdict of over $1 billion in damages to be paid to Apple.

Isn't $1 billion dollar very low in this case? If I were Samsung I'd just pay the billion and then laugh all the way to the bank as they certainly have made far more than that from the copy theft...

And they will !

That's why Apple is spreading its risk to other manufacturers too. At the same time, other companies will also become wary of Samsung. LG, the Japanese, and the Taiwanese should be happy to step up their game.

Yes. But they will be forced to pay license fees to Apple for their future products too, unless they workaround the patents. At which point, they might as well also workaround MS's patents -- if they can.

This time round, Apple only highlighted a few patents. I'm sure there are more. So it's probably better for Samsung to pay up.

EDIT: btw, Apple design their own CPUs. Samsung only manufacture them.

I reckon this would be a massive win for SJ's family, who would have obviously known that one thing SJ really wanted was for Samsung to stop stealing Apple's idea's, and vowed to spend every cent of Apples to fight this. I'm sure SJ's family would be very happy for Steve and very proud of Tim and the crew for continuing to fight this.

Good on ya Apple, and great to see them acknowledge this is so much more than being about the money or patents.

Like apple was ever gonna lose this case. American company in an american court, arguing over patents that would be too general in any other country than the US. This whole case is a farce.

If this is the case, we have to wonder what Samsung management were thinking. Paid MS and let Apple sue them. Now they will be branded as thief forever. People don't forget these things, especially after they mocked their potential customers.

Apple need to do two things with that money:

1) Develop the next big new thing (not just another phone/ipad)
2) Pay the slave workers they lease like cattle in Asian factories a proper salary

Well said Timmy. Well said.

For those who wish to read Samsung's statement.

"Today’s verdict should not be viewed as a win for Apple, but as a loss for the American consumer. It will lead to fewer choices, less innovation, and potentially higher prices. It is unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners, or technology that is being improved every day by Samsung and other companies. Consumers have the right to choices, and they know what they are buying when they purchase Samsung products. This is not the final word in this case or in battles being waged in courts and tribunals around the world, some of which have already rejected many of Apple’s claims. Samsung will continue to innovate and offer choices for the consumer."

Thank You For Sharing. What A Joke Is The Samsung's statement S*ckers!

Here's a short excerpt about Apple from the awesome "Embrace the remix" video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1s_PybOuY0#t=05m22s If you liked it there's more (not about Apple, but music, movies etc) at http://www.everythingisaremix.info/watch-the-series/

What people aren't realizing is that it's not only a victory for Apple, it's a victory for Microsoft and Nokia.
With a handful of Samsung products out of the way, and other Android manufacturers thinking twice about what they put into their phones, people that want to avoid Apple because they're convinced Apple is 'Evil' will look at Nokia and WP7 (and soon Windows 8) as the better alternative.

Then hopefully those people finally realize that their old Samsung products were never really as innovative as they thought.

It's a victory for innovators. Android manufacturers who pay up, or innovate differently should be fine. This law suit doesn't mean Android is doomed. It just means you need to license the relevant technologies from Apple (and MS).

Go back to stealing from Android apple.

If there's something worth stealing, they probably will license, buy, or innovate differently.

Pathetic.

Apple is a fracking joke.

This is what kind of message Tim Cook is sending to "innovators everywhere":

Don't innovate.
We will find you.
We will get you.
We will sue you using our trivial patents.
You can't win with Apple.

I am truly and utterly disgusted with Apple. From now on I will never buy an Apple product.

I am also disgusted with the American patent law and jurisdictional system.

It's about time justice had been served. :apple:

Stop posting those naive images. Apple didn't invent ~30-pin connectors, it didn't invent icons grids.

Apple sued Samsung over a rectangle with rounded corners, a pitch to zoom patent (a gesture that was around for 40 years!) and other pathetic patents.
