Fall 2024 becomes a mandate...

Sorry, it is in Japanese. Best to get someone who is fluent in Japanese to translate. Google etc. still not good for Japanese (though is good for basic things).

Not technically a mandate now, but will start in fall 2024.
It’s a proposal to merge the health insurance card into the My Number Card.

BUT (big but, lol): It’s not finalized as you can tell from the less-than-specific “fall 2024” estimate.

AND (big and, lol): There is little chance (in my opinion, at least) that it’ll happen by fall 2024 anyway. I am going on my second decade here in Japan. Time in Japan definitely doesn’t make my an expert on Japanese politics or anything like that (I want to make that perfectly clear). However, I have been here long enough to see things get delayed over and over and over again, lol.

Sometimes that’s a good thing like back a few years ago when that second sales tax increase (from 8% to 10%) got delayed (twice — it was finalized into law years before and it ended up getting delayed twice). But often changes that might be good take far longer than they should to actually become law (and actually implemented when they do become law).

I noticed it too..it is a shame as Amazon and Netflix is on the move, but still has a way to go. I am another who likes to walk the isles in search of something to watch instead of having to wait for streaming download etc. Easy to just pop a disk into a player and hit play.

but..actually things are available still, not on the isles. There is a computer that if you punch in what you are looking for (have to know the title in Japanese - they always change the name as is their movie tradition) it might be in the back, or they will order it for you and it will arrive in a few days.

They reduced the isles for spacing, but many videos are still able to still rent. for 99 to 350 yen a movie, can't beat it. :)
Thanks for letting me know that! Had no idea.
Happy New Year!! あけましておめでとうございます!

just a side note from the topic thread:

Last week I paid 1.25 yen to rent John Carter and can rent it for a week. The benefits of still going to a DVD/Blu-ray shop, so I hope Tsutaya hangs on. :)

Actually to my surprise (after hearing negative reviews about the movie) it was a good movie. Found out that internal politics and other executives at Disney had 'other reasons' for purposely not promoting it, etc. Too bad. It was planned for a trilogy, but went to the axe even before offical release. Even Tom Cruise for many years wanted to play John Carter, but when it finally came out, he was too old (and probably cost too much anyway) for the part. The actor who played John Carter (forgot his name) was the perfect John Carter (as I would have imagined) when I read the books as a kid.

Anyway, some still like physical media, especially outside the U.S.

Yeah that was actually quite a fun movie. It had great potential for the future, and is (in my opinion) much better than a lot of the Marvel stuff that came later. My understanding is that the film simply cost them too much, and so they couldn't turn a profit on it. Movies these days seem to keep getting more and more expensive, but the storylines don't really improve much. I wish they would go back to better story telling.

Sideloading a toxic app could easily compromise wallet security.
While I tend to agree to some extent, I do think that the main focus should be to make the wallet (and iOS in general) intrinsically secure enough that a toxic app cannot compromise it, rather than defend an insecure wallet simply by excluding all apps that they can't control.

a) There is never a single layer of security that works 100%.
b) 2 layers of security are better than 1 (see a) )

SW is so complex that there will always be issues, so making it harder to get to the point where one could exploit one is a smart move.

Agreed. So implement several layers, to ensure that the chances of rogue apps compromising the wallet are as slim as possible. Locking down the app store just in case some rogue apps might slip in is like closing down all the roads to avoid car accidents.
