Influential in making a large tech company run efficiently and build obscene profits, yes. Influential in progressing the development of technology... no.
so true.
He's 'influential' because for the time being, Apple remains an economic giant in the tech world. It's all about the financial position of power they hold,
and nothing to do with the acual tech they've released in the past few years.

Apple has moved the iPhone on from the 4S. It has moved iPad on from iPad 2. It has moved the Mac on from the MacBook Air refresh in 2011.

Dual cameras, Touch ID, Apple Pay, the fastest chip put in an smartphone... how can you say this is coasting?

What about the billions Apple has spent on R&D? It has increased relative to their earnings, something which would not happen if the current team just wanted to milk existing products.

If anything, I think a few of the staff are on the same page as the blind haters.

Agreed. I've seen one of the moderators is defend the position that Apple creates fake demand during Iphone releases. Creating fake hype to increase demand. Really?

It makes me wonder where the quality control of this place has gone!

Buy the rumor, sell the news/facts. That's what the CEO's are doing.
So the shareholders are really happy while the customer base is increasingly dissatisfied with the incremental upgrades to a phone that costs as much as a computer. And the other products have been allowed to turn into dip-crap. Looking ahead the next phone launch is looking like a major headache from the customer point of view. Most influential...sure whatever

So the Classic Watch companies like Rolex working on smart watches is a coincidence? Or because of how successful Android Wear has been? Or is it because Apple is now the #2 Watch brand in the world if measured by revenue?

And are we going to ignore Touch ID and pretend every flagship phone doesn't have a fingerprint scanner because of iPhone?

Watches (and even smart watches) existed before Apple released the Apple Watch. Just as computers existed before the Mac, MP3 players before the iPod, smart phones before the iPhone and 'tablePCs' before the iPad. The Mac,iPod, iPhone, iPad were all influential products because they set the bar and other companies mimicked them. How many smart watches, which have been released since the Apple Watch announcement, try to be like the Apple Watch?

Yes, Apple probably has the marketshare & profits (within a niche), but "influence" involves culture/taste. The original Mac was not a marketshare/profits leader, yet it had more influence than the watch. IMHO

most influential in running apple into the ground. The wolrd just doesn't know it yet.
Lol, you don't read much about numbers relating to Apple huh?

"Cook ranked fourth for his "nearly unmatched influence over the technology world" as head of the world's most valuable company." Nearly? Apparently not if he ranked 4th

I'm not sure how Tim Cook is influential apart from being the CEO of the world's most valuable company. Steve Jobs was influential. Tim Cook is just a numbers guy. If anything, he's holding the company back from its true potential.

Below Elon Musk as he deserves. Musk is the closest thing to Jobs in the current industry

Elon is the closest person to Jobs alive today. He WILL change the world. Tim Cook will not, he's just a very rich man who gets even richer every time somebody buys one of his company's shamefully overpriced sub par products.

If by influential they mean neglecting a product line for 5 years & coasting on the legacy built by his predecessor then yes, I would agree.
Sounds like this Time honor is more of an acknowledgement of Tim's SJW efforts rather than an endorsement of his 'great technological sphere of influence'. Not saying the latter is non-existent, but rather that lately it might seem to be somewhat overrated.

Elon has his well-deserved top spot.

yes, cook is very good at generating short time profits thats why the company is still growing. But he is doing it at the expense of long term growth

You mean he's like Jobs in that there's a big RDF around him. How has he changed the world so far? IMO Tesla is more hype than anything.

Who is Jeff Williams?

Guess you missed this in the original post...

Cook may be the public face and chief decision maker at Apple, but Jeff Williams is second in command. An Apple veteran who's been with the company for nearly 20 years, Williams is often referred to as "Tim Cook's Tim Cook." He was named chief operating officer in late 2015, a post previously held by Cook, and has been overseeing Apple's entire supply chain since 2010, no small task given the complexity of the company's hardware operations. Williams also oversaw development of the Apple Watch, the company's first new product category during the Cook era and a sign he's closely involved with new projects.

Apple is heading towards no mans Sony land. Sony once an electronics giant (TVs, PCs, Laptops, Digital Cameras, DSLRs, you name it), now only driven by TV (barely) and Playstation. One day Apple will only be a cell phone and laptop manufacturer when it comes to building new products if Tim Cook doesn't write the wrong of the past few years.
