Cook's statement was unfortunate. I doubt his intent was to offend but he apparently offended many people. Perhaps the best course is for Cook to apologize in very genuine terms.

Moving forward Apple execs need to concentrate on Apple's work. Do better if they think it's indicated. Android has the larger market share. Dealing with facts will be better than making dismissive remarks about the competition.

Cook's performance as COO was brilliant. He may be the best operations manager on the planet. Being the face of Apple may not be his forte. Hopefully he will be able to get some coaching on public speaking.

Did you see him when he testified before the Senate committee on Homeland security? He was amazing! The committee was there to nail Cook to a cross. By the end the senators were eating from of his hand.

They loved Cook. He had a command of the subject matter and he was very impressive. His knowledge of tax code and it's proper application is second nature to him. He was very comfortable and it showed.

He does very well on topics he knows. Maybe products are just not his thing. He can recover from this but future mistakes like this must be avoided.

Maybe Tim is pissed off that Apple isn't doing better in Europe.

His point was that Europe is a blanket term referring to many different cultures, which takes away the individual cultures/beliefs...etc. For example 'we declare war on Europe' wouldn't just be war on one country, in the same way that a war on 'Android' isn't just war on one manufacturer.

Android means Samsung, HTC, Sony, Motorola...etc so isn't just 1 'country' that you can declare war on. It's a bunch of individual handset makers all with different goals/target audiences who happen to use the same currency.

I'm no fan of cook but this has been blown out of proportion. Some people have taken what he said out of context.

Perhaps but the GP editions and the Nexus phones also aren't popular, except with the uber phone geeks.

That's because the Google Play edition phones (and for the most part) the Nexus 5 are mostly sold "unlocked"--and the unlocked cost of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S 4 Google Play edition is US$649 for the 16 GB version--very high indeed.

What I'm referring to with the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S 5 is that you can get the Google Play edition as part of your subsidized phone contract, not just in unlocked form.

....and this is why we like Apple,,, not a bloat of things we don't want, and not to mention bloatware (unless you opt for Google experience, (when available)

All I know is that Apple's Maps sucks in my part of Scotland, and Siri has fewer features here than in the US. Meanwhile, instead of putting resources into improving Apple's services outside the US, Apple is buying back stock.

Fragmentation indeed.

You certainly have a valid complaint but to say, "instead of putting resources into improving Apple's services outside the US, Apple is buying back stock" is just silly.

Bad analogies

Apple CEO Tim Cook compared Android to Europe in his wide-ranging interview with The Wall Street Journal yesterday,

Not exactly.

I'm no fan of cook but this has been blown out of proportion. Some people have taken what he said out of context.

Her vocabulary was as bad as, like, whatever. (Unknown)

From Linguistic humor, Worst analogies (taken from high school papers)

http://www.ling.upenn.edu/~beatrice/humor/worst-analogies.html

Perhaps we need two categories of bad analogies:

Category 1: Android is like [...]

Category 2: [...] is like Europe. (Or is that EU? ;) )

More stupid comments, android apps unlike IOS dont need to be specially optimized for tablet use, the eco system goes beyond brand and apple is loosing that0...

And then this "Europe was a name that somebody came up with for Americans who didn’t understand " ?

Please get another ceo this one is braindead, hurry before the stock tanks another 10% in a day .

I don't think he was saying Android/Europe is crappy, so much as it's not truly one cohesive platform. Rather a bunch of autonomous platforms that are loosely tied together under one umbrella of services.

Or in Europe's case, a bunch of self autonomous countries that are tied together under a common set of laws and trade agreements.

Though the quote itself isn't exactly the swooftest thing I've ever heard ole Cook say.

LOL! at everyone getting bent out of shape over nothing.

The android tablet apps are phone apps. They aren't designed and engineered for the space they live in. It's just a blown up phone app. Google could've avoided tis by fully embracing HTML5 like Mozilla has done.

Only two hype phrases in that sentence. I think you can go for more than that.

Europe is a great place, so is Tim telling us Android is a great place as well? Weird comment for him to make.

It was a bad analogy.

But, all the same, it is obvious that Tim was trying to say that there isn't one Android. And, I can attest to that-- we have three different Android cell phone models in our extended household, and, even with two from the same company, all three are different. The two Samsungs are closest. Tim was trying to say that there is one iOS. The latest Samsung probably can be upgraded to the latest Android, although it is out of my immediate control. But, there sure are a lot of Androids, and, between the carrier and the manufacturer, it is well nigh impossible to keep them up to date.

(Talk about beating a dead horse.)

In the meantime, there is actually one main manufacturer to think about right now -- Samsung, and if Samsung can work with the carriers to get upgrades working well, obviously, Apple's big advantage in that department will disappear. Maybe Apple will respond with a mid-priced iPhone. That would be nice. I like iOS better than Android, but, I can't afford iPhones all around.

Europeans are so sensitive.

According to the US Census, there are about 5M Americans who were born in Europe. Since Europe is not just a bunch of different things, you should be able to get the same kind of information easily. Perhaps from the European Census? I wouldn't know where to find this out, as I'm not European; but I'm sure, based on this thread, that Europeans would be able to find this information fairly easily, correct?

That doesn't answer the question. Plenty of them could have moved to the US a long time ago. That doesn't describe the migration situation now.

Can you tell me how I can remove Safari, Apple Maps and Newstand from my iPad? I don't want them and certainly do not use them, they are for all intents and purposes, bloat that you claim Apple does not have.

Well, we work harder. So it's expected.

Ahh yes! The American dream... work hard to make someone else a lot of money!

Yeah the CEO of apple says some very stupid things, thank god he doesnt have to make any important decisions.

You simply dont get it, ios and android act different, ios works with resolution so every app has to have a different set for every resolution, android doesnt. Most apps just scale. The only reason you would want differences is to use extra screen estate of larger tablets.

But plenty of apps dont need that and lets not forget with phones up to 6" the difference isnt that big .

Not really as most european countries dont track citizens that way.

What purpose does it serve to know where all the citizens came from?

Btw a large part of that migration is from long time ago.

As I see around 5-6 million USA citizens live outside USA, a large part of the 20-30% in europa.

Visited large parts of europa and I can say that for western/northen europe there is little to no difference for the average person. Wether its better depends more on personal "taste" .

Germany is an export driven economy. Without the freeloading parts of the EU to export to their economy would have fallen apart.

----------

Well done, you share a land border with Mexico. Go team USA.

Germany sell many more cars to other countries than the EU, ya'know.

The EU is full of freeloading, corrupt countries. Spain, Greece to name but a couple, They have all squandered their money & now spread like a virus to neighbouring countries to suck up more income - the UK being one of the places being hammered in this way.

Still; bigger fool our government, eh?

The alternative version goes a little bit like

They squandered German money lent by German banks to spend on German goods. Things kinda became tricky when they were going to default so Germany lent them more money so they could pay back the Germans.

Not exactly altruistic.

Some people prefer the freeloading version but since they are both true you can believe whichever you prefer.
