@Wololo

Mexicans immigrate to the US and not Europe because:
- one "just" means hopping over a fence and then walking through a desert, while the other pretty much means buying a plane ticket and going through customs
- there allready is a large Mexican /Latinamerican community in the US.

People from Africa, Asia or the middle east on the other are more likely to try getting to Turkey or Lybia from where they will have to buy into a very dangerous boattrip at best ending them at the buttend of the EU (read Greece or southern Italy)

Numbers might be lower, but thats more about the fact that it is very hard&dangerous for those people to get, plus it's near impossible to make a decent living as an illegal in the more desirable parts of Europe.

If I were Samsung I would quote this in marketing material in Europe.

The "a name somebody came up with for Americans" part is gold.

Exactly. Cook made a complete idiot of himself (and his company). After this derogatory stuff, even fewer Europeans will purchase Apple products.

I know most Europeans are well enough off, but if the iphone is revered, why is there such low market share in Europe?

We simply have more choices. EU-wide regulations prevent carrier lock in. MNP (mobile number portability) is mandatory. There are no hidden costs to premature contract termination (if you are on a contract).

Given multitude of choices, even if "revered" by some, iPhone is still only one of the dozen actual smartphones available. Relatively high price helps only to maintain the prestigious status: it doesn't help when pragmatic buying decision is made.

Otherwise, as far as I can tell, things mobile are simply cheaper here. I went with cheap Android device (280€ new), because it fits well with the prepaid tariff I have bought: 10€/month. (It has puny quotas, but they are sufficient to me. I pay around 3-5€/month extra for SMS and voice.) My friend in Raleigh, NC has "cheap" contract too and pays something like $45/month. I pay per year, rounding up, 15*12=180€. He - $660. If I were looking at recurring costs of $660/year, then I might have also decided to buy a higher end device like iPhone. Because $600 for a phone wouldn't look that bad then.

Cook is becoming a bit of a liability. He is starting to embarrass himself. Less talk and more compelling new products would be nice, Tim.

Um, Tim Cook doesn't really talk to the media that much. I want new products when they're ready. I don't want Apple releasing stuff just to satisfy people with short attention spans and tech geeks constantly wanting new, new, new.

I once had a conversation with a woman who was very rude to me about my English, when I explained to her that I spoke English as I was from England she would not believe that America had not invented English.

Again I have met many intelligent Americans on my many visits.

Sadly though saying that Europe was named to help Americans is possibly a slight on the general geographical knowledge of Americans?

I live in the US and haven't met very many intelligent Americans.

How is this wrong or a slight at Android?

It's true when you figure that Android is not Android; Android is a bunch of different skins and looks under the name Android.

The fact that you think it is some sort of slight or Tim Cook "slamming" Google just shows that your fanboy is showing.

Cook is becoming a bit of a liability. He is starting to embarrass himself. Less talk and more compelling new products would be nice, Tim.

Huh? He's becoming a liability because he answered a question that he was asked? Okayyyyy.

He's not even in charge of developing the products, he's a CEO.

So we know Apple hates Android…..thinks its stolen product……so what do they think of Europe then? Tim compared Android to Europe.
Android has many varieties ……some very good….some very bad. But as a whole if Android was horrible….it would not dominate marketshare like it does. Even if you say if has the lowed devices…there are also high end devices that dominate sales. The many varieties and diversity is what makes Android so special. It can be customized and tweaked to perfection by a vendor or a end user……..
But lets not put one platform down to justify another. They are both great platforms and mobile OSes. I use both and love them both…...

Why do Apple apologist always insult if anyone disagrees with Apple? Do you really think Apple the most profitable company worldwide with billions to spend cannot figure out how to make a larger iPhone without compromising quality? Or to release and iPhone twice a year? They can….they don't want to…..they are perfectly happy with their present release cycle.
As for the short attention spans of all of us nerdy geeky types……must be like reading and debating on a rumors site huh?

By the way, this may change soon.

The fact that Google's current Nexus and Google Play UI's for Android 4.4.x versions are very well-regarded mean we could see the slow phaseout of manufacturer-designed UI's for Android itself. That means the Balkanization of Android Tim Cook referred to may soon come to an end, and we could see possibly even the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S 5 offered with the Google Play UI as an option in addition to Samsung's own TouchWiz UI.

I'm not sure if I understand Cook fully in that statement. Is his message a positive one towards Android and Europe or a negative one? I could say Birdseye fish-fingers are like the Atlantic Ocean and everybody would just as confused. His statement needs expansion and clarification rather than just a vague comparison.

Has he previously said anything positive about Android?

Perhaps but the GP editions and the Nexus phones also aren't popular, except with the uber phone geeks.

I do not care what you say. just make a good products and provide proper service.

thats stupid, because what happened with PS4 and their abuse? Xbox from Microsoft Thats a joke. Every single company is here to make a money. And I say Apple is doing great job and you make benefit from a single app, for many hardware generations to come. Say that about PS4,xbox :D
You are just a user, so put blue ray in your DVD player and cry. WHY WHY WHY :D

Wtf?

"Europe was a name that somebody came up with for Americans who didn't understand that Europe was a lot of countries that weren't like U.S. states''
he screwed it up

How far off is this, really? The word has existed for 2,500 years. But for almost all that entire time, it would have been of little interest to anyone except scholars and aspiring emperors. Does anyone imagine the average citizen of Savoy, Franconia, the various Galicias, Flanders or Moravia was aware he was living in Europe? At most, he may have been vaguely aware of residing in Christendom, and being at odds with various Saracens and Turks. And to those few then using the esoteric term "Europe", the term actually changed meaning radically over the centuries. The term "Europe" has not been applied to Nordic countries nor Russia, for most of its life.

The term "Europe", as meaning a specific geographical region, probably only came into everyday use by common people as something to distinguish the old country from the geographically specific term "America". Outside of very rarified usage, it really had no useful purpose before that.

I live in the US and haven't met very many intelligent Americans.

Have you considered the (somewhat obvious) fact that intelligent people tend to prefer to associate with their peers?

Bad analogies

That would be good. Another thing that would be good would be if it becomes possible to maintain some level of privacy while using an Android phone.

The analogies just keep coming. For some reason, nobody can have a short conversation about anything involving some level of analysis or judgement without dragging in an analogy. I don't know why people are jumping on Tim
Cook-- everybody does it all the time.

And you have 50 little states.
317 million americans vs 739 million europeans...yeah we are small..
Moron.

He said "28 countries". The population of the EU is 500M, not 739M. Someone who does not understand the difference between a country, a continent, and a loose federation, would be well advised not to denigrate the intelligence of others.

Er, source?

According to the US Census, there are about 5M Americans who were born in Europe. Since Europe is not just a bunch of different things, you should be able to get the same kind of information easily. Perhaps from the European Census? I wouldn't know where to find this out, as I'm not European; but I'm sure, based on this thread, that Europeans would be able to find this information fairly easily, correct?

----------

I am actually truly offended by this.
First off

EU = European Union
USA = United States of America

Both is more or less alot of things under one flag.

And I am pretty sure my next phone will be a Windows phone when hearing stuff like this and my next computer will be a Mint/Windows one, as I have not been very happy with either Mavericks or iOS 7.

LOL. You would be close if you were comparing the USA as invented in 1789 with the EU today. The USA actually fought a moderately significant civil war in the mid-nineteenth century that eradicated that messy "alot of things" business. Possibly news of that conflagration never made it to your part of the world, as your folk may have been busy helping some Archduke grab real estate from some Prince or something.

The acquis communautaire gets rid of those other things in Europe, too, and goes a lot further besides.
