I'd like to see a larger screens well, but not at the expense of a bigger phone. Im thinking apple may keep the size, but expand the screen, as one handed usability has always been high on their list. :apple:

Tim Cook seems much more dedicated to the Chinese market than to the rest of the world which filled Apple's pockets so far

[...]Apple won't have to pay the carriers the high margins they demand [...]

Just correcting myths as I see them: carriers do NOT make a fortune from selling iPhones. In fact, they make a lot less than most other consumer phones.

Apple however, IS making a fortune:
1) They force carriers who wish to carry the iPhone to first commit to selling very large amounts. This means they require the carrier to first spend top dollar before any profits are made.

2) iPhone profit margins are very low for carriers - do some research.

3) In less-developed countries, Apple actually screws carriers even harder by selling them the iPhone at a considerably higher price.

Mr. Cook posting on Twitter in China ? Well I thought it is blocked... Seems like he is crossing the Great Chinese Firewall :)

I have no wish to use something the size of those Notes, but I think the Galaxy S4 is a good size. I have an iPad Mini and like it better than the iPad for size. But I don't want my phone that big.

I also think that with a slightly larger phone, not only do you get the opportunity for a larger battery, but also a slightly thinner device.

I have no desire to use something that's smaller than a Galaxy Note. I actually think that the Galaxy Note is still too small. The Galaxy Mega is more like it. If the Nexus 7 could also be used to make phone calls, it would be the perfect match for me.

Owning a phone AND a tablet just doesn't make any sense. 9"/10" tablets are too large and no substitute for a notebook - they're useless toys. 7"/8" tablets have the right size, but the high end models like the Nexus 7 or the iPad Mini can't make phone calls, and it doesn't make any sense to carry around two mobile gadgets for the same purpose.

For me, the Android manufacturers are on the right track with their high-end, big smartphones like the Galaxy Mega/Note or HTC One Max series. Big phones that still fit into my pocket, that can also serve as an eBook reader and "surf board". For me, that's just perfect.

I still wouldn't buy a "phablet" from Apple, though. iOS is only a highly restricted front end for Apple's AppStore, and I never had the feeling that I actually "owned" an iOS. Those products always felt as if they were only rented from Apple and came with a lot of rules that I had to obey in order to use them. I never had that feeling with an Android or Windows device.

(OS X is a different story. It's entirely unusable on servers, but it's a very good desktop/notebook OS and Apple hasn't closed it yet as they have closed iOS.)

1. A carrier retails an iPhone for $1800 - $2100 including wireless service. AT&T for example charges over $2500 for the 16GB iPhone 5c. http://www.att.com/wireless/iphone/index.m.html

Compare a carrier or MVNO's cheapest text and data plans.

2. Compare with iPad margins:
16GB iPad mini LTE is $429.
24 months AT&T data = $360 for 250MB or $720 for 2GB.

Apple needs to trim the top and bottom bezels on a 5" iPhone... or else it will be bigger than the Galaxy S4

Unfortunately... the home button and TouchID are very important.

Let's hope Apple continues to offer the flagship iPhone in both 4" and 5" to satisfy more people.

I think I'd rather go with the Moto X form factor -- I think it's the perfect size after having handled it in person.

You don't sound like you ever "owned an ios". What rules do you speak of??
I honestly can't think of one rule I have to follow when using my iPhone or ipad.

This year there will be a 5-5.5" iPad with LTE. Unlike other iPads, it will have an earpiece and a vibrate motor.

Like other iPads, out of the box it will not be able to make cellular audio calls or send SMS. This enables Apple to offer it at a much lower price than the iPhone because:
- Apple won't have to pay the carriers the high margins they demand
- Apple won't to pay Qualcomm for the voice features to be enabled on their chipset, which makes it cheaper to produce.
(See the difference between the iPad and iPhone for the scale of these costs)

Even if it cost as much as the iPad mini 7.9" (which it won't), it's half the price of an iPhone. iPads are available in much wider distribution channels than iPhones, and they are not locked to a carrier.

FaceTime Audio and iMessage are Apple's solution to phone calls and SMS. And their are plenty of solutions in the App Store that give you a regular phone number and SMS.

Even carriers don't see a future for traditional voice - it isn't part of the LTE standard as there are a plethora of existing VoIP standards - almost all of which work today as apps on iOS! Carriers have been terrified of this impending moment - they become a "dumb pipe" - truly commoditized.

The new iPad's 1356 x 1024 resolution is exactly half the new 12.9" iPad Pro (2712 x 2048) Only one new layout is required to support both the iPad Pro and iPad 5"

Legacy iPad and iPhone Apps Run Letterboxed with minimal border:
iPad Non-retina = 1024 x 768 = 166 pix top and bottom
iPhone 4” retina = 1136 x 640 = 110 pix top and bottom

The new iPad isn't the solution for everyone yet, but its amazing price (16GB ~US$399) for something that isn't last year's model, sold through retail channels, not carriers, and larger screen will drive phenomenal sales.

In less than 4 years the iPhone and iPod touch will be discontinued. The iPad 4" LTE will replace the iPhone. The iPad 4" WiFi will replace the iPod touch.

iPad is what Steve Jobs intended the iPhone to be named in the first place.

We weren't really ready for that as they had to be named relative to things we already knew - a phone (iPhone) and and iPod (iPod touch).

You are one crazy fellow.
Having your device in hand for a minute would show you that iPad apps are not meant to run on a 5" screen.

Maybe it seems ridiculous but I do love 3:2 display ratio, instead of 16:9 even with bigger screens & hope a little that Apple think about that for future iPhones.

I'm not interested in a larger screen in any way whatsoever. I hope Apple does not abandon me the way that other companies did.

I want to be happier now! :D

What is it with all this one hand operation crap?! I previewed Steve's iPhone intro in 2007 and I consistently saw two handed operation. One hand held the device. The second hand flicked, pressed, pinch to zoom, typed, etc.

Longer screen, same width.

A longer, but slightly wider, iPhone would give a 1" increase without infringing use for smaller hands. It means that landscape mode give internet browsing much better readability while portrait gives more length.

That's the ticket to success.

iPhone screen is now 16:9, I highly doubt that they will make even more panoramic. And a longer and slightly wider screen will worsen one handed use, it is just a question of measures

So Tim Cook was asked about a larger iPhone and not surprisingly wouldn't comment. Wow color me surprised.

And yet more carriers than ever are selling iPhone. Excuse me if I'm unable to create tears for the telcos.

I think what most people don't even mention when they talked about larger screen is the RESOLUTION issue. This should be the focus of ANY serious discussion about screen size. Figure out this riddle and you'll have your answer.

The reason why App developers have an easier time with developing for iOS is its restricted screen size. For every upgrade in resolution (sans iPhone 5), they've double the dimension.

Even with the iPad mini w/ retina, they did what I thought would be very difficult to do (which was to double resolution into the iPad Air category). I thought that they may go 1.5X from the iPad 2 resolution. But again, I was wrong, and Apple stuck with the 2x resolution deal they've been doing all along.

So, I think they won't pick any other resolution besides a potential doubling of the current one. My guess is that this will be a doubling of 640×1136 to 1280 x 2349.

When you see a device floating around / supply issue with a screen resolution of 1280 x 2342, then we know that a larger iPhone is coming.

I've just been reading through the comments, some have been interesting, others are just people showing ignorance and hostility.

To those saying 'I have no interest whatsoever in owning a X" iPhone' yes you may not be interest due to whatever reason like having midget claws, I can assure you the demand is very much there. Why else would large android and windows phones be selling so well?

I don't know how big apple will go, my guess is 4.7-5.0", they will shrink the bezel and adjust the design in order to minimise the awkwardness. But I have no doubt they'll keep a 4" version around for some time at a slightly lower price point.

I've used a friends S4 and it certainly felt big (as well as cheap and plasticky) but not unusable, I have fairly large hands (I'm 6'3") and actually find my 4" iPhone 5S a bit too small when holding it. Apple aren't stupid, it's the reason they do so well. They know many people don't want a giant phone be it S4 or Note sized and will definitely keep making 4" variants, but they will move with the market. Anything bigger than 5" is just getting stupid, anything less than 4.7" is too insignificant, that's why I believe this is the screen size they will chose. what resolution they decide is anyone's guess. 1080x1920? A scaled resolution of 640x1136? 1080x1920 would be my choice, simply because it's become a standard for media and scales up well with 4k and above displays. Just have to wait and see. But no doubt Apple will work their magic again.

Apple will never lose the "iPhone" name. Sorry. You kept me reading though and I agreed with most of it.

I really hope they keep the standard size phone along side this new monster geek phone that will make you walk with a limp when it's in your pocket. I'd actually love a smaller phone as well. I miss the days when phones were getting smaller and smaller with each generation.

I mainly just use my phone for making phone calls and quickly checking the web/news apps, a smaller phone/screen would be fine for that. I use an iPad for all other apps and games where a bigger screen actually makes sense.
