Whats interesting to me about the next iPhone will be in relation to thickness. Apple always strives to make things thinner, but the headphone jack is now the thickest object on the outer rim of the phone. To make it thinner, that has to be changed.

And I also think this is a MAJOR redesign, just like the iPhone 4 was. The phones since the iPhone 4 have largely been based around the same philosophy, and I think this next generation will be radically different. I feel like Apple has been working on this thing for a while (remember the larger screen teardrop shaped rumors). Whatever is coming is going to be amazing.

It doesn't matter. The iPad air is slimmer then the iPhone 5s and has a headphone jack, not only that, but there is a lot of room for it, they can trim the iPad even more easily. If you look closely on the side, you can see they can almost take of still around 3mm of thickness. It's the chamfered edges and little gap that makes it seem there's no room.

My god Tim Cook and his billion-dollar stock option is so out of touch with reality it's just sad at this point. Who does he think he's fooling by not saying what everyone already knows about a larger iphone? He must be some kind of delusional to think he can keep any kind of relevant secret from prying eyes.

It's always the same shtick with you. Of what company are you CEO?

This year there will be a 5-5.5" iPad with LTE. Unlike other iPads, it will have an earpiece and a vibrate motor.

Like other iPads, out of the box it will not be able to make cellular audio calls or send SMS. This enables Apple to offer it at a much lower price than the iPhone because:
- Apple won't have to pay the carriers the high margins they demand
- Apple won't to pay Qualcomm for the voice features to be enabled on their chipset, which makes it cheaper to produce.
(See the difference between the iPad and iPhone for the scale of these costs)

Even if it cost as much as the iPad mini 7.9" (which it won't), it's half the price of an iPhone. iPads are available in much wider distribution channels than iPhones, and they are not locked to a carrier.

FaceTime Audio and iMessage are Apple's solution to phone calls and SMS. And their are plenty of solutions in the App Store that give you a regular phone number and SMS.

Even carriers don't see a future for traditional voice - it isn't part of the LTE standard as there are a plethora of existing VoIP standards - almost all of which work today as apps on iOS! Carriers have been terrified of this impending moment - they become a "dumb pipe" - truly commoditized.

The new iPad's 1356 x 1024 resolution is exactly half the new 12.9" iPad Pro (2712 x 2048) Only one new layout is required to support both the iPad Pro and iPad 5"

Legacy iPad and iPhone Apps Run Letterboxed with minimal border:
iPad Non-retina = 1024 x 768 = 166 pix top and bottom
iPhone 4” retina = 1136 x 640 = 110 pix top and bottom

The new iPad isn't the solution for everyone yet, but its amazing price (16GB ~US$399) for something that isn't last year's model, sold through retail channels, not carriers, and larger screen will drive phenomenal sales.

In less than 4 years the iPhone and iPod touch will be discontinued. The iPad 4" LTE will replace the iPhone. The iPad 4" WiFi will replace the iPod touch.

iPad is what Steve Jobs intended the iPhone to be named in the first place.

We weren't really ready for that as they had to be named relative to things we already knew - a phone (iPhone) and and iPod (iPod touch).

Would you like to place a wager on this? I'll even give you odds.

Just correcting myths as I see them: carriers do NOT make a fortune from selling iPhones. In fact, they make a lot less than most other consumer phones.

Apple however, IS making a fortune:
1) They force carriers who wish to carry the iPhone to first commit to selling very large amounts. This means they require the carrier to first spend top dollar before any profits are made.

2) iPhone profit margins are very low for carriers - do some research.

3) In less-developed countries, Apple actually screws carriers even harder by selling them the iPhone at a considerably higher price.

Apple doesn't "force" carriers to do anything. They don't have to buy it. They can tell Apple to pound sand and go away at any time.

Actually, that's the exact definition. You not liking the word does not mean it doesn't have a definition.

Have you ever used a 4.7 inch phone? And I was not aware of an official definition of the "word" phablet.

Edit: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phablet

Hmm......

Agree, 5" is pretty close to the sweet spot with me as well. Although if the options are 4" and 6", I'll go for the 6" even though I think it is verging on too big. I'd rather have too big than too small...

Completely agreed. 4" is just not cutting it anymore. The perfect comparison is with computer monitors. There was a time when 17" seemed plenty, but try getting work done on a monitor that small nowadays.

I consider any phone with a screen that is 5 inches or larger to be a phablet. My HTC One is 4.7 (I think?) And I can operate it with one hand, like an iPhone. I don't consider it a phablet. It's a large cell phone, yes. But not a phablet. "PHABLET" Is a silly word anyway.

I want to go back to iPhone soooo bad. Can't wait until February 23rd... Upgrade. :) HTC One is a great phone, but neither it nor Android is as good as iPhone and iOS, in my opinion.

the more I see of phablets, the less I want one....but it would be nice to have one available for the folks that want an iPad mini-like phone in their pocket

would like to see more form factors with the iPhone, which is coming someday (soon hopefully). Depends on the look and feel if I will personally jump to the bigger iphone.

I could see the iPod going away at sometime, but the name iPhone will live on as long a people are still using phones as a primary source of communitcation.

You sir, are crazy!

Am I the only person on the planet that would prefer a smaller iPhone?

Probably not, but then there is a Collective Want.

It is hard for many people to stand out from the crowd and not conform
Some people are so unsure of themselves and lack their own confidence that they HAVE to wear the same cloths, drive the same cars, own the same phones etc as people are them as they are so desperate to fit into their social circle.

This is not uncommon and has been going on for years.

Personally I like independent people who genuinely buy whey THEY like and not what they feel they should get to fit in.

Buy something nice and small and be your own individual :)

All those people writing paragraphs on how you don't want a larger iPhone because its 4.7" is considered a phablet.

Shut up.

You know your still going to get it.

If their figure is true, their total revenue per subscriber works out to about $117/year and that's assuming 100% of their revenue comes from subscribers (doubtful it's 100%). Of course handset sales are part of that per subscriber number plus any subsidy, too.

You asked if the article had a typo when it said 763 million customers.

It doesn't appear to be a typo.

----------

True, but it's important to note that about 80% of them are still on 2G phones and can't even afford a cheaper (Android) smartphone.

"Only" 100-150 million have a 3G phone, the addressable market for Apple is therefore much smaller at the moment.

There are also many unofficial iPhones already being used on the CHL network.

That wasn't the point.

User hudson1 simply questioned whether China Mobile really has 763 million customer or if the article had a typo.

It appears that China Mobile does, in fact, have 763 million customers. That's all I was showing.

Completely agreed. 4" is just not cutting it anymore. The perfect comparison is with computer monitors. There was a time when 17" seemed plenty, but try getting work done on a monitor that small nowadays.

On the other hand a lot of people have gone the other way. Apple doesn't even make a 17" MBP anymore and sales of the 11.6" MBAir are strong. How anyone can get work done on a screen that small is beyond me. They must have great eyesight and spend their whole day in a single app.

At work I've got two 1920x1080 displays and multiple spaces and still end up having to rearrange windows all day.

There is a place for 4" phones. They pack a lot of functionality into a small space. There is also a place for 5" phones that offer substantially more screen real estate in a device that still fits into a pocket. I'd really like to see Apple offer the full featured, full speed iPhone in both sizes.

Older folks want bigger phones

I hear that some would like a TEN INCH phone. Like the phones of old, with jumbo numbers. They are probably easier to find than an itty-bitty phone.
Just sayin'

Mr. Cook posting on Twitter in China ? Well I thought it is blocked... Seems like he is crossing the Great Chinese Firewall :)

He'll most likely be using an American SIM; it's only blocked for Chinese SIMs/ISPs.

Those who want larger screen phones are welcome to them, I already have trouble reaching the upper right of my 5S screen and I have large hands, Jobs was right. I have had to rearrange my apps so those I'm frequently using in single hand situations are in the lower half of the screen.

iphone 5c really made us all happy.

your phone should be the source of happiness in your life....but all right ill bite -- my dad just got a 5c for $0. he's really happy with it. it does the job he needed done. if yours doesnt, why dont you return it, get a different one?

Any developer who uses the same layout on a 12.9" iPad "Pro" that he/se uses on a 5 inch "iPad Micro" deserves to be slapped vigorously.

ALet's hope Apple continues to offer the flagship iPhone in both 4" and 5" to satisfy more people.

Lets hope not. Too many SKU's is bad and entering the phablet market is just stinks of bad business.
