Tim Cook has been with Apple since 1998 - about 15 years. He had been granted $510 million in Apple stock per article last December (yes, it's come down since then :). Ignoring all his other compensation over the years, this amounts to about $35M/year. At 50 hours/week, 50 weeks/year, that's $14,000/hr. Add a typical Apple markup, say 200%, and he's worth $42,000/hr. The $100k bid isn't much over what Apple should be charging for him, day in & day out.

Of course he actually makes more than just the stock, and most of his earnings are in the last few years, so $100k/hour is probably less than they should be getting for his time today -- if, of course, he's worth what they're paying him.:)

Great job denigrating a dead man. Just because Steve Jobs doesn't boast about it, doesn't mean he doesn't contribute.

Bono said under Steve Jobs, Apple was the large contributor to Fight AIDS under project RED. Jobs is also seen as a prime candidate of someone who made an anonymous donation of $150 million to cancer center at the University of California, San Francisco

Under Steve Jobs, Apple also contributed to Stanford hospital:

Doubt Steve would have ever done this considering how little he donated to charity.

Ok, does anyone else think it's odd that the charity is for justice and human rights when Apple gets a lot of it's stuff from China, who is one of the wort violators of Human Rights?

Did that stop you from buying Apple products?

Yes it might be beneficial and for business reason for OWC CEO to "sit and have a cup of tea" with Tim.

But to your last point, I don't get it. The new 27" iMac is still upgradeable from what point? The only accessible component is RAM, that's not changing but still, the rests need brave souls or official ASP to make the surgery and upgrade. That's not by any means "upgradeable"
Yes, RAM. HDD/SSD if selected with Apple. That's all I consider 'upgrading' - no doubt others wouldn't.
I was saying it seems increasingly harder to do such things, and probably will be in the future. Given the latest iMac screens to do the HDD/SSD.

OWC doesn't just do upgrades, they do accessories. External optical drives, external hard drives, Thunderbolt enclosures, iPhone cases, etc.

But if they think that Tim is going to spill upcoming product announcements they will be very disappointed.
Agreed. Wishful thinking.

But the only user-upgradable component on the previous iMac was also the RAM. They haven't changed the upgradeability on the 27" in that regard.

Yes iMac 27" luckily still have accessible and replaceable RAM slots in it. But in regards of repairability, the new 2012 iMac is more sealed and harder to pry open than previous gens (Maybe you've already read it on iFixit).

RAM is the easy part, but considering OWC also provides SSD (blade or 2.5") for Mac computers, that repairability factor alone makes the new iMac less upgradeable than the old one.

if apple was serious the could choose to do business elsewhere but their greed dosent allow that

If by "greed" you mean actually being able to compete with all of the other US companies, which also get labor from China, yeah, Apple is too "greedy" to back out of that.

Steve changed the world with his vision of computing giving even 3rd world countries the opportunities to own a smart phone. I think that's charity enough.

Yeah. All those people who boast doing 120 hours of "community service" in high school do nothing compared to people who later found great companies, employing thousands of people and providing products to the entire world. You want to help the community? Start a corporation instead of walking 5 miles and putting up posters to encourage people to save paper.

Tim: "So you are the bastard providing upgrades to our supposedly non upgradeable Macs?"

Larry: "Uh... yeah."

Tim: "We would really like this to not happen. We would like our customers to pick a more expensive configuration from us directly, or buy a new machine, if their RAM or SSD is not sufficient. Because of this, I've decided that we will now also solder our SSDs to the logic boards in the future."

I hope OWC founder/CEO gets it to be honest.

OWC are a pretty decent source of Mac upgrades and knowledge and it might be of some benefit perhaps for them to sit down.

Though I'm getting increasingly scared that most of what Apple are making in the future will not be upgradeable. Thankfully the latest 27" iMac still is.
I'd better not see an increase in the price of my next batch of SSDs

How do you know he donated little to charity. Just because he wasn't public about it doesn't mean it didn't happen.

i won nearly 37 million US $ in lottery but i gave it all away to charity. i kept it private, i only brag about it on internet forums though.

Source?

Pretty sure people in 3rd world countries who fight for food and water don't give a **** what Steve Jobs invented.

Steve did a lot, but don't over glorify him and his ideas.

Does the winner of the auction get a refund if Tim Cook loses his job before the coffee date takes place?

hehe :D

if apple was serious the could choose to do business elsewhere but their greed dosent allow that

...Or how about having the necessary skill-sets and production volume?

There's more to manufacturing than just cheap labor. Is Apple going to have to take on the responsibility of reforming the education system in the US? Simple answer: Nope.

One can only understand this comment through sarcasm...

Touché... well done!

I'm not sure why anyone here (or who might be bidding) thinks they will get any inside information and/or be able to really pitch a product/service, etc.

Oh sure - you might be able to engage Tim in a conversation about your company. But at the end of the day - unless he's REALLY compelled - not much is going to transpire.

You're "buying" 30-60 minutes of his time. That's all you're getting. You and he in the same room at the same time one-on-one.

It's not a "let's grill Tim Cook about all things Apple." If he's unwilling to talk to the press at keynotes or stockholders meetings - he's not going to magically open up to you because you won an auction.

And you aren't going to be BFFs/pen pals either.

Info.aspx is in the lead currently...

I have no idea who that could be or how I could possibly google that.

Yup. Idle,awkward chit-chat for 30 minutes.

And maybe a photo.
For this reason I hope some company exec. doesn't win the auction.

And that photo could very well be taken by the charity and/or Apple marketing to go in their newsletter... MAYBE you'll get a copy ;)

Yay OWC!!!!

OWC makes the best and most compatible parts for Mac & THEY ARE MADE IN MERIKA!!!!! So hopefully he can knock some sense into Tim Cook and start putting some better quality/home built components in Mac. I tell you what, if I had coffee with Tim Cook I will smack him and tell him to "STOP RUINING THE NANO!!!!!" They were on the right track with the 6th generation Nano. Alls they needed was wifi and app support so you could run Pandora/internet radio and buy songs on iTunes. But what did they do? They took the handy dandy clip off the thing, made it bigger like a mini Touch, and added video support!!!!!????? On a nano?!?!?! Really?!?!?!?
