This trial is setting up the ultimate argument: why do consumers have to use the App Store as the only means to install software on their iPhone or iPad? You know that's what's coming.

How can we know? Was this really Scott’s fault? Under how much pressure was he to release Apple Maps at that time? Did he warn it wasn’t ready or not? We don’t know the details. All we know is he was fired because he did not want to sign the letter of apology to the public.
Indeed, we don’t know.

That means we don’t know that it was his fault and that he deserved to be fired.

It also means we don’t know that it was “not really his fault”, or that he was “ousted for no good reason”.

You’ll note I’ve made no assertion whether he was to blame or deserved to be fired, I’ve simply argued with people who have acted like they do know. So it sounds like you agree with me.

One thing I do know though - his UI design might not have been everyone’s cup of tea aesthetically, but it was a lot easier to identify interactive UI elements in those days.

I see how it can be hard for people not to empathize with Epic. I still make an effort of the see the hard work of the content creators. When you are an entire company and see 30% of your profits taken away by an intermediary for no reason, i could understand the struggle. Good luck Epic.

My interpretation was that Scott wasn't fired because of Maps, but because of his abrasive attitude that made it hard for many other executives to work with him. Maps just provided a convenient excuse for Tim Cook to fire him, but either way, it was clear in hindsight that Scott Forstall's days at Apple were numbered so long as he refused to toe the line.

Last I checked, Epic too runs their own App Store and charges developers a commission to host and sell their apps.

I have absolutely zero sympathy for Epic, not least because Epic is clearly not doing any of this for the benefit of consumers or developers. I want Epic to lose, and I want them to never again be allowed on either iOS or android, for having the temerity of endangering the vitality and viability of the App Store for everyone else, just to earn more money for themselves.

It is very telling that Scott is on Epic’s list instead of Apple....it is also telling that Apple is bringing in so many people to praise the security of this App Store model when the Mac is secure without it (aka browser downloads)

Noooooooo… as someone that happily wore that first Apple Watch (SS) for years I don't agree at all.

In my opinion calling that first AW obsolete after a year is as ignorant as calling every earlier iPhone obsolete simply because Apple releases a new one every year.
Yeah... I rocked my launch day s0 until grabbing my s5. The screen on the 0 is trashed: awful burn-in, whole thing is super dark, virtually useless now. Sitting in a drawer (ironically enough, I just charged it yesterday and was reminded how awful the screen was). But in no way was it obsolete in a year. It’s greatest feature then is still my fav - even on my s5 today: I pull my iPhone out way less than pre-watch era.

Yes. There can be many reasons for someone being fired. Yelling in a meeting, having a poor attitude, messing up massively, and more. People are getting fired for much more ridiculous things these days like completely false accusations.

People need to stop bringing this up. No, macOS and Windows is not "just as secure" as an iPhone. I have actually seen malware on a macOS device and never seen one on iOS. The classic desktop model is NOT secure.....NO way.....Just look at what is happening to Windows environments recently. Solarwinds, Microsoft Exchange, still hearing massive reports about Ransomware taking down businesses (some hospitals and CD Prokekt Red). We still are in an environment where one bad email and one employee that falls for it can take down an ENTIRE company until they restore from backups. So I really wish people would stop with the "macOS" and to some extent "Windows" are "just fine". The only reason macOS has less malware is due to market share. If I were to write something malicious, I would go after Windows since there is more of a chance to get someone.

And macOS malware is on a rise too.

macOS malware is worse than its ever been IMO. I have 3 iPhones in the house, 2 android phones, 2 mac laptops, and several windows machines (desktops, laptops).

The only 2 devices that got hit with malware (one of them being OperativeMachine malware) were both running macOS, and nothing in the house has an antivirus.

How about all the developers Epic tricked into thinking they were getting a better deal with Epic's 12.5% rate only to find out they give you nothing for that and that you lose closer to 45-50% or even more per sale? Epic give you the equivalent of hosting a webpage for their 12.5%. Google, Valve, and Apple give you a complete package for 15/30% and with no hidden fees.

well that's one aspect lack of data but the engine behind is was garbage also and that's kinds his fault cause he was the leader of the projects so he should tested it in smalls detail

How do you think Cook Approved it?!!
It was tested but locally probably only around Apples campus. It was there first try at weening off Google. Apple doesn’t source the map data and didn’t back then entirely.

Scott did great for Apple as a whole:
iOS
Time Machine !
instilled and persisted in the quality of iOS apps submitted by developers included the app main icon logo.
Else we’d all be using iPhone XS as phones and junk apps that covers more than 50% of androids. No thanks!

Why - who was in charge of building/acquiring the database?

FYI Google is THE only company that sources it’s own map data! Until very recently Apple.
Even Nokia for their S60 maps or Microsoft for every smartphone OS they made outsourced map data entirely!

“The enemy of my enemy is my friend?”

may first I was like “what you talking bout Willis?!” Then realized FB’s battle with Apple is about privacy NOT the App Store pricing model itself

Go see Phil Schiller: "Can't innovate my ass"

Sorry but this was that former employee that leaked all data that Apple is suing recently. That guy is in charge of the crappy butterfly keyboards as it was HIS design not Phil
Heard a rumor he’s held up in a Thatch Roof Cabin in West-Central Wales near the Mach Loop. ;)

he’s been working and getting awards and nominations for Broadway plays he’s created and quite successful at it or having cameo interviews that 100 Days of code.
LOL! Somewhere either ON or OFF Broadway.

Exactly
Will Forstall be like Hulk Hogan at Bash at the Beach?

Whose side is he on!!?

Nah he’s be like Ultimate Warrior when he military pressed some 300lbs guy for a 10 count in the ring. That boys n girls I think he 80’s was Epic!!
