Apple needs to stop selling outdated technology. They're selling the iPhone 4s and the iPad 2 which won't even be compatible with iOS 8 next year. Hell, the iPad 2 is barely compatible with iOS 7. It runs like crap.

Outdated technology is what makes up all phones at the 0 dollar price point. You're not going to get the bleeding edge tech without paying for it.

I'm still puzzled by the 5c. Does a 15% price difference really differentiate the three market segments?

5s $650
5c $550
4s $450

Seems like 30% would make more sense. Most other electronics have the low end at 50-60% below the top model.

My girlfriend uses my old 4S, it's display feels like an old Nokia 5110's screen today. I know there are people out there who still think it's perfect, but I cannot believe anyone would get a two-year contract to get that phone for free.

As for the iPad2, it's 379€ with a **** display and only 16GB and WLAN... I cannot believe people still buy this thing... oh apple... or oh people?

The 5C is okay compared to the 5, but it's simply not good compared to the competition (price range).

"5c Wasn't Meant to Be an Entry-Level Phone", we just wanted it to look like one. ;)

Color = cheap? Apple has had many high-end products with color (recently iPod and iMac). There's an entire world (demographic) outside of the metallic/masculine products.

They've had this model since the 3GS/3G/2G. Its been tremendously successful for them meaning that yes the 15% price difference does differentiate three market segments.

Apple does not compete at the low end and they never will. Its the same reason you don't see them selling bargain MBPs/MBAs.

Yeah, free.

Sure Timmy.

Not all consumers want to lock themselves into onerous 2-year contracts.

And most consumers would prefer some hardware subsidization since they're paying for monthly data plans over those 2 years anyway.

As did mine until I took another reader's suggestion and did a clean install of iOS 7. Now my iPad 2 runs like it did with iOS 6.

The 5C is to me a much nicer phone in design and would love the 6 to be based on it with the sane colour styles.

Best phone visually to my eyes since the 4.

Wasn't the best move keeping the 4S around. Yet another year before the 30 pin connector is killed.

It probably costs Apple US$1 to make a cable that they sell for US$20. So why is it a problem for them?

As already pointed out, the iPad 2 uses the old 30-pin connect and so does the iPad Classic.

We've already seen the iPhone 5c selling for $45 on contract. I suspect we will see that price drop down to free by Black Friday.

Once iPhone sales drop off in the spring/summer timeframe, I'm sure we'll see "new" colors released.

Apple really needs to address off contract pricing. Sure, free is nice for those willing to be on a contract. But more and more people are buying phones outright, overseas as well as in the USA, and $550 for the 5c is just insane. And $450 for the 4s? It's ridiculous what you can get on the android side for that price.

Sure Apple needs to make their profit, but that number doesn't even make sense when you look at pricing for the iPads and the iPod touch.

The iPad 2 and 3 are basically the same. The iPad 3 has a retina display which needs a better chip to move 4x the bits. It has that better chip, not not a superior chip.

(The iPad 4 has the superior chip, and iPad Air even more so).

I don't think iOS 8 will exclude the iPad 2 or 3. I think that at some point, something like iOS 10 will require 64-bit chips, thus exclude all 32-bits at the same time, which means anything before the iPad Air will be out of luck.

I don't feel like this word fits Apple in the usual sense, but it totally does when it comes to the cable: Fragmentation. It's a crappy consumer experience for anyone who ends up with more than one Apple mobile device and they're not the same cable. Apple would have been best off updating all products to use the new interface and instead they're just dragging it out. The new socket is actually nice, but the half and half product line ruins that.

[...]

The "retina" display alone makes the iPad2 an inferior product at an incredibly bold price of 379€ (in germany) compared to anything available today. I know it's not about specs, but you must be knee-deep in iOS eco system, and some more ..., to not get an nexus10 (399€) instead of an iPad2.

So you think Apple should scrap the "outdated" phones and sell just the very latest? Or have two models, both the same latest tech but with two different prices?

Ooh you have insider info on iOS 8's compatibility? Please do elaborate. They're gonna drop support for a product they still sell?! Geez, talk about planned obsolescence! /sarcasm

iOS 7 runs great on my iPad 2, thank you.

Yeah, free.

Except there's no real benefit to not doing so. You're still paying the subsidized rate even if you buy a phone outright.

To be fair, some of iOS7's crappiness is across devices.

This is what you get when you have all kinds of idiots pressing Apple to change iOS to something new just for the sake of having something new. Now we all have to suffer through growing pains while Apple gets iOS to be close to the robustness of iOS pre-7.

Better than locking into a contract and still paying an additional 200 or so on top of that for a phone. I mean, they can't just give it away for absolutely nothing.

No one is asking for that. Buy it unlocked, and go with the carriers that do not cost the same, subsidized or not.

To claim it is free is being disingenuous.

I don't think it's out of order for them to call it free.. It is free, with contract. Just like the iPhone 5S 16gb is 200.

The 5c is an excellent phone. I switched from the 5s to the 5c yesterday and am very happy with my decision.

IMHO they should have made the 5 free, then everyone would have the lightning cable and a 4 inch screen sooner.

Oh wait, they couldn't do that because they repackaged the 5 and called it a 5c.

Great product but stop scamming the consumer. I really don't like how they release new products and then remove the previous gen only to continue selling a 2 gen old product. They did it with the iPad as well.

There is no scam. Unless you think so because you said so?
