I'm with you here. And I think it needs to be said that almost all mac's being changed for newer models, will be sold or given away to other people with less power hungry computing needs. Not everyone need 4K video editing machines!

Ya. I don't think I ever threw away any type of electronic equipment. Always sold it to someone else. I mean hell, even old wires I didn't need had a box of them and sold them at a garage sale.

please give us an indication what non-boring and unpredictable things you would have liked to have seen this year. And what about the Apple watch, how was that boring and predictable?

The Apple Watch was predictable. In fact, it was predicted. A line of Apple-inspired fragrances and skin care products would have been unpredictable. How about Apple Cruises? Apple tires? Apple apples?

Wouldn't call the iPhone 6/6Plus a success. It was a complete disaster. Did anyone not notice the supply problems from the second it was released?

No. I remember the demand being a lot higher than one could have predicted.

For the record, I don't consider Mac's overpriced for the quality of the product.

What I don't like, and what stops me buying a Mac is lack of "Choice"
That IS APPLE these days.

Apple decide what you need, what you should be using, and how you should use it.
Unless they ever change this, I cannot see myself buying a Mac.

To be brutally honest, the only time I could see myself buying a Mac is when I'm a lot lot LOT older, and have just given up bothering, and want someone else to make all the choices for me, but I'm no where near that point now.

I agree somewhat in spirit. Apple has largely become what Microsoft used to be...the final arbiter of how individuals interact with its systems from hardware choices to software choices. Where I disagree with you is that this has anything to do with age. I am a self-professed old fart. I've owned Apple gear since I bought an Apple ][+ in February of 1980. Since I was once a UNIX kernel programmer, I very much enjoyed having total control of my systems and that was much more possible both in hardware and software in earlier decades with Mac systems. The trend, largely set by Apple, is to move everything into the "cloud". For me that presents a lot of security and privacy issues. For the record, I don't trust today's Apple any more than I trusted Microsoft in the 80s/90s/00s.
Linux and FreeBSD may become more attractive.

What I want, is what many want, and what Apple won't make, and may well never ever make as it goes 100% against their "Apple knows best" policy, and that's a "Proper" desktop Mac computer, that I can fit my own memory, SSD's, and most importantly graphics cards into.

Millions of real loyal loving Apple users would jump on such a machine, but Apple probably will never make it, as Apple has realised the big money is in the mass market of customers who don't really know much about computers and just wants a very nice looking box that just works.

Of course, there is a BIG market for that.

I just find it such a great shame Apple now sticks 2 fingers up at any real computer users, and all those people that Actually made Apple a company in the 1st place.

Apple has left those loyal fans with nothing :(
And that's a great and sad shame :(

This is true and putting a slick but less flexible HI on UNIX has served Apple well up to a point. There are many people who are younger for whom these issues do not present a problem. Apple's bread and butter now is mobile and consumer devices. To me iOS is a horrible operating environment, but that's because I'm used to having a real workstation for a computer system. Now, Apple is merging MacOS with iOS, to the definite detriment of MacOS in my opinion. The default is that apps have to come from Apple's app store. It's actually somewhat a pain to install 'non-approved" software. All of those are technical reasons that I don't much like Apple's current direction. I also find Tim Cook's use of Apple as a bully pulpit for political issues important to him to be somewhat unethical. Bottom line, I'd prefer for Apple to produce "insanely great" products and leave the political posturings for individuals.

lol, i know. i'm a died in the wool, long-time apple techslut myself and even to me these comments are laughable.

Mac mini ram soldered -- who cares????? it's a little ****** box! you want to max the ram, order it maxed for f's sake. so silly. whatever pennies you think you may save going 'off brand' for ram is hilarity. waste more time talking about it why don'tcha?

and os 'a disaster'....??? uh, on what planet do you reside? mac os is the most stable, capable, consumer-aimed os out there...

as always, if you can do better.... [feet up, reclining..] we're all waiting to see your handiwork. baited. ******. breath. out here........

Who cares? Thousands of Mac users who love the Mini and was expecting an actual UPGRADE not a downgrade.
Yosemite has many issues, all noted on this website. Ignoring them doesn't make them go away

CEO of the year because his corporation has made the most profit? I guess that's what it means because I personally would never vote anyone in that position of a corporation that big as CEO of the year!

And CNN????? That's a news channel right? So why would anyone actually care less what they think anyway?

All about that profit margin. But if I wanted to pile on,

Aggressively pushing software releases that weren't ready or tested

Pushing his own personal agenda on behalf of the company

"THINNER IS BETTER"

This comment is so problematic.

Ya, they just closed down their factories and offices in Los Angeles, moved to a smaller institution in Texas. No problems though.

----------

Does winning the award have anything to do with his coming out this year?

No. Lookup what a CEO does, has nothing to do with their sexual orientation. Next question.

Tim Cook was a good choice, but I believe that I would give it to John Chen at Blackberry. Chen had absolutely nothing to work with and a stock price that was below $2.

Was always going to be tough gig after jobs. Enjoy the award....shame it's CNN.

----------

I agree. Tim was running Apple for sometime before Steve's passing.

I'd argue that Tim delivered Jobs roadmap during and after Steve passing. I'm just worried that roadmap is coming to an end, hence everyone is asking what happened to the innovation .

Tim would be smart to bail out when on top, question is, has Apple reached the top yet?

Would you believe some of these posters reside on planet earth, facing the reality that Yoshimite launched with some serious issues, what planet are you on where Yoshimite is the most stable OS ....LOL!!!

Had you been a Mac user for a long time you would realised why upgrade ability was a selling point with macs. You solution of buying the max spec.... LOL, you completely missed the point . How about the fact the previous generation mini was faster? You often buy an upgrade that is worse??? Yeah, got my feet up, tell me more of this awesome planet you live on.....

Why do I get the uncomfortable suspicion that one of the reasons why he was awarded this was because he came out publically?

and not at all because his company is the biggest, most valuable US company? yeah thats your paranoia.

but doing the above AND being the first Fortune CEO to come out is a big deal. in my state you can be fired for being gay.

----------

Because coming out publically as gay isn't exactly an award-winning achievement.

of course its an achievement for the first fortune-100 CEO to come out as gay. in the old-boys club this would never be tolerated. it's changing. yet here in Louisiana you can still be fired -- FIRED! -- for being gay.

Well deserved. The iPhone 6 is amazing and was the most exciting upgrade since the iPhone 4. Loving the integration across my iPhone/iPad/Macbook that Yosemite and iOS 8 have brought as well (though iOS 8 had some initial issues). Good job Mr. Cook.

For imposing an aesthetic? The decisions were probably justified. The aesthetic sells. Attitude to software testing? Perplexing (speaking as someone who's main, but not only, role is testing systems of software, people and hardware). I remain unhappy with iOS8.

Well deserved. It's not easy following a legend. Hopefully he can continue to be a positive role model for young gay men who want to pursue a career in business. For that matter, based on his career so far, he'd make a good role model for all young men.

Mr. Cook named CEO of the year by CNN..

CNN is relevant?

Only to those who feel it deserves comment.

----------

So you can also be imprisoned or killed in some countries for being a Christian. Does that mean the CEO of Chick-fil-a deserves a shout?
Yes, if he moves to one of those countries.

Where is the big AppleTV update? It doesn't matter if it's ready or tested, and Cook is supposedly being aggressive.

We want transit directions in maps, whether they work or not. Someone said you were pushing. What gives? Are you aggressive or not?
