Being gay in a world where gays and lesbians are still persecuted or killed for who and what they are is sure as hell a big deal. And for someone who the head of one of the biggest companies in the world to come out as gay is a big deal. That gives others hope that it can and will get better.

BL.

For this reason alone, Tim deserves a nomination.

Not to defend the list, because I also think they could have done better...

.. but who would be on your list for Person of the Year? In short, you're not happy with what they have - could you post better? I'd love to see what others have in mind for the award.

Exactly.

If you're saying someone shouldn't be on the list - at least give your opinion on who SHOULD be on the list....

or you're just a hater or player that I have to shake off... :)

If it took Tim coming out officially for anyone to realize the man was gay they are blinder than Stevie Wonder and somehow more deaf than Helen Keller. :D

That having been said the rest of the list isn't much better. Ferguson protestors? Give me a break. Roger Goddell.... same. Taylor Swift, why? Did she have less boyfriends this year? Ebola caregivers, no offense but this is the JOB you signed up for. Wish I got an award everyday for that.

Honestly of any of what is listed Jack Ma is the most interesting and surprising. His interview about his newfound fame and fortune hit home as him being someone who doesn't want the spotlight or notoriety, he just wants to continue living in peace, do what he loves, and have a decent life. Was pretty and pleasantly surprised to still see a "human being" in a position of power like he is in.

My $.02.

By thier own criteria Putin should win hands down as the most influential person this year

"a person, couple, group, idea, place, or machine" that has "for better or for worse done the most to influence the events of the year,"

Yes. Putin, by this measure, should absolutely win.

At least Putin has a backbone. Swift .... Wtf?

Cook has been a runner up for Time person of the year right?? Though I would debate that he has actually done much while he has taken over, like flying autopilot. While not a bad thing to be honest, I have to admit innovation has been lacking since Jobs roadmap dried up.

Actually for the Beats deal alone, he should be removed from the list......

For levity's sake.

Hitler was Person of the year also in 1938.

I think it was called Man of the year in the 1930's.

Not sure if it is the Canadian version of Time or another publication, but here in Canada, we have "Newsmaker of the year", which is a more accurate title, IMHO... Person of the year kinds of give it a positive spin even if not is implied.

The list is mostly ok and Putin will probably win the honors again (after all he is the single biggest threat to world peace right now, hence the most influential). But that's fine - future generations will look back and he will look just right among his spiritual equals Adolf Hitler (person of the year 1938) and Joseph Stalin (person of the year 1939 and 1942).

At the end of the day it's all about selling magazines and I'm sorry but Tim Cook does not sell magazines.

Tim Cook coming out was not the most important event 2014.

This has nothing to do with a certain 'event'. This has to do with influence. And Cook's coming out shows to everyone, regardless of who they are or what they have in the world, that being gay does not mean you have to be treated like a pariah.

To us in the US or any other First World country, this may seem normal. To someone in say, Iran, Africa, DPRK, etc., this could mean the world.

Who knows? Knowing someone as influential as Cook being gay could have saved a kid from committing suicide because someone was idiotic enough to record and broadcast his tryst, violating his privacy.

Cook has more than likely gone through just as much persecution, especially from being from the Deep South, and knowing that it got better for him just may give hope to someone else that it will get better for them.

While I understand where you are coming from, If one lives in a country that openly prosecutes or kills gays and lesbians , I am not sure how very rich man, leading one of the worlds biggest companies, coming out is going to inspire them.

Look, Cook coming out was not a shock to anyone , and really not a big deal. Now if Putin were to come out...... BOOM!!!!

You know they are going to pick the Ebola care workers. Its just gotten so predictable lately.

Yeah he just sells hundreds of millions of $500+ devices all year long.

Right, because coming out as gay is the solution to world hunger and the 1000's of lives lost everyday from trivial causes.

Roger GOODELL? Pioneer of the Fist-Bumpgate? What an atrocity to justice, and what an endorsement of the Illuminati!!!

Hope Tim Cook wins.
