I'm not trying to downplay how talented Tim Cook is running Apple's vast empire, keeping the brand going and making great products, nor trying to say his coming out wasn't a good thing, I just feel that Person of the Year should celebrate people fighting Ebola, or doing charity work, etc.

Being gay in a world where gays and lesbians are still persecuted or killed for who and what they are is sure as hell a big deal. And for someone who the head of one of the biggest companies in the world to come out as gay is a big deal. That gives others hope that it can and will get better.

Come on. He lives in California, the gay capital of the world. He's a multi millionaire who could retire tomorrow. He's hardly taking a risk coming out now.

You could say the same exact thing about the only other person similar to Cook that would be just as influential: George Takei.

Everyone on the ST set knew that Takei was gay, and if it had come out back then, his career, let alone his life would have been ruined. After Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed same-sex marriage legislation here in CA in 2005, he took the same risk that Cook did and came out. Things got better for him. Same for Cook, and they are paying it forward to others who aren't as fortunate enough to be able to survive on the amount of money Takei and Cook have.

Again, it isn't about money, or the act of coming out; it is about how much influence they could have on people who are (were) in their position: gay, in the closet, and worried about what would happen if they came out.

BL.

Personally I would vote for Jony Ive. His designs have revolutionised the way we think of and interact with technology on a daily basis around the world.

If anything he was the one, more than anyone else, who kept Jobs and Ive in line from approving products with a 2% profit margin but even better built than what we ended up with. He's always been a numbers guy and continues to be. Can we give him the award based on how many Chinese and Taiwanese families he facilitates great working conditions for and an amazing quality of life at 80-100 hours a week of work for with his number crunching abilities? Waving a rainbow around doesn't mean you still can't be a crook, Cook.

Sorry, I call it like I see it and know it. <stir stir stir>

true - but he's the CEO of the most profitable company in the world - more than exxon. being in such a position, it's not necessarily the fact that he'd be 'risking' anything in a physical sense, but he'd be doing a disservice to anyone like him who lives in some degree of fear. it took courage to come out. he's a relatively private person who took a huge gamble stepping into steve mf'ing jobs' shoes. i'm not gay, but i admire the hell out of the guy for having serious cajones.

Is this a joke list? As in, something leaked as satire??? Putin, Goodell, Taylor f'n Swift, Tim Cook. WTH have they done?!?!

Let's skip all the outside stuff and go to the mac part. Why is Tim Cook on here. What has he done besides crunch numbers and hype up a year of unbelievable products which really was just another similar year to any other for Apple?

Look, I love Apple. But let's be real here. Tim Cook has done nothing to deserve this. Yes, he came out about his sexuality. But even he, didn't make a big deal about that and most everyone already knew.

Let's be blunt. the Person of the Year is just click bait. Time used it to sell magazines. Now they use it to get web clicks, generate buzz, on sites like these, in the hope of selling magazines.

It signifies nothing. Never did.

From the people who chose 'you' to be the person of the year in 2006, comes the nominees for 2014, including the Russian president Vladimir Putin, and pop artist Taylor Swift.

The Ebola caregivers certainly couldn't be included, because that is a collective group of people, not one individual.

I'm guessing they will chose someone controversial and illogical from our point of view. If my prediction is true, then it shall be dubbed CRIME Magazine by yours truly.

Cook is at the pinnacle of his career, he was never at risk in coming out.

I would much sooner see someone like Sean Penn nominated for his continued work in Haiti, when everyone else has left the country.

Time Person of the Year is like the Grammy's. You can criticize it all you want, but some very important and influential people have won the award, and the winner is a permanent piece of history.

No reason the people fighting Ebola couldn't win it.

The only real risk he's taking is that some people will look on his coming out as a reason to stop buying Apple products. Right or wrong being gay is still frowned upon or even illegal in many countries and religions around the world.
Personally I think one's private life should remain private.

Not that I bothered reading it much in the past, but Putin??? I'll never bother to pick up an issue of Time again...not even at the dentist.

Putin would actually get my vote. It's not a value judgment, it's about who had the biggest impact on the world/news/society. IMO that's putin this year. Russia hosted the Olympics, the whole Ukraine thing, crushing rebels, defying the EU and US, etc. Not a nice man but influential this year? Absolutely.

Time's person of the year award is given to "a person, couple, group, idea, place, or machine" that has "for better or for worse done the most to influence the events of the year,"

In that case, ISIS should have been nominated too. They've clearly been very influential with events this year.

Seriously .... Tim Cook?

I can't believe it.

Probably because the Apple Watch had something to do with it.

i was hoping to see Rush Limbaugh in the running. He probably had as much to do with the Republican take over of the Senate as anyone other than O. ;)
