This is not about the best/nicest/coolest person of the year. It's for the most influential. Has nothing to do with good vs evil.

So that would mean Hitler takes the gold every year. Sorry but it's not just a popularity contest. The person must be influential in a way that moves the world ahead in positive way too. And it has to be a person. These groups of people take a questionable award and make it a joke. What was it last year? Bloggers?

"a person, couple, group, idea, place, or machine" that has "for better or for worse done the most to influence the events of the year,"

Well I'm not sure what the others in the list have done this year, but I certainly don't consider Tim Cook to have done anything to fit in this bracket, announcing your gay doesn't influence the year and neither does an iPhone launch.

But hey ho, it's only what some magazine thinks.

Putin is an odd choice; he has only distinguished himself by leading his nation down the economic rathole and trying to rebuild his old country using Hitler's playbook. Neither is changing the world much at all.

Maybe a*****e of the year.

Hitler DID win, in 1938. Stalin won too - twice. Putin has also already won twice.

Maybe your criteria would be better, but they're not the way it's acutally decided. The actual criteria: "a person, group, idea or object that for better or for worse...has done the most to influence the events of the year".

The reason hitler doesn't continue to win is that the actions themselves have to be in this year, not just some far flung repercussions.

Now that Tim's openly gay he'll definitely win, because otherwise Time will be sued for intolerance.

Seriously, it's all hogwash. Since the time when they've given Nobel Peace prizes to Arafat and to Obama. At which point it became completely irrelevant.

The list is mostly ok and Putin will probably win the honors again (after all he is the single biggest threat to world peace right now, hence the most influential).

I agree, but again, the 'most influential' might mean for 'most of the population', and I would guess that for Americans, because of the American culture, know more about Taylor Swift than they do of Vladimir Putin... therefore Taylor Swift would win for most influential from them.

Like all Apple does best, Tim wasn't the first to come out, his announcement wasn't the most eloquent nor the most impassioned, but with all things Apple, his timing was impeccable.

30 years ago such an announcement would have been a death sentence. That there's such hatred and animosity still doesn't surprise meas old hat reds die hard. What also won't surprise me is that in another 30 years being gay will be perfectly normal because kids growing up today will have rôle models whether they be Sam Smith or Tim Cook.

Time's award has never really been about what's politically expedient but about human progress. If Tim gets the award then I applaud both Time and Tim. This is one aspect of human development that will have its day in the sun.

I like Tim cook less and less each day. I guess time will tell what his tenure at Apple does to the company in the long run. Personally, I thibk his coming out was more a publicity stunt than anything altruistic. Just like people have speculated Apple bought Beats to be more "hip" with another demographic, being gay is also "hip" in some circles, and honestly I think Apple is afraid they're becoming too niche and needed to broaden their appeal.

But I guess we'll see.

Taylor Swift person of the year ?

Just wow.

that's all I got.

Her new album 1989 is easily one of, if not the best albums of 2014, and that's say allot coming from me, who NEVER listened to Taylor Swift before this album.

I've been playing her entire Album non-stop, and everyone I know who has the album loves. I see references and spoofs to her album and album art all over social media. I could totally see her being the most influential in the music space this year.

Vladimir Putin?

TIME, please.

"Person of the Year (formerly Man of the Year) is an annual issue of the United States news magazine Time that features and profiles a person, group, idea or object that "for better or for worse...has done the most to influence the events of the year".

Hitler was person of the year in 1938.

Roger Goodell? The Washington R******s, and the Adrian Petersen and Ray Rice abuses obliterated any character and credibility he or the NFL ever had.

TIME shouldn't have even taken the time (pun intended) to consider him.

BL.

Those scandels are WHY they're considering him. To be person of the year, you don't have to be a super amazing person. You just have to be a huge topic that year. Hence Putin on the list too.

Putin would also belong in the most wanted terrorist list.

Name: Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin
Known aliases: Putler, Huilo.
Crimes: mass murder, theft of state properties, liquidation of independent media, information warfare, multiple illegal wars, occupation, supplying terrorists with weapons and money, general crimes against humanity and psychopathic desire to start WW3.

Well in this case, Putin wins!!

Apple currently has three quarters of a trillion dollars in the bank. I doubt they're afraid of much of anything at the moment.

Considering the mediocre to monstrous people that have been Time's Person of the Year. It's not really an honor but a slap in the face.

Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin were winners.

1989 is the only album to go platinum this year.

Are you talking about Putin or W Bush?

And Benito Mussolini was on the front cover of Time Magazine many times during the 1920s-1930s (although I don't see any evidence he was ever the Man of the Year like Hitler and Stalin).

Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin were winners.

So were FDR, MLK, Ghandi, Churchill, and many more admirable names. It's a mixed list with the only common denominator being highly influential.
