Well that's disgusting.
Only if you view this designation as some sort of recognition that a person is great or heroic. It's not and never has been. If you look at the list of past winners, there are heros, monsters, and people who fall decidedly in the middle. It's simply a recognition of a level of influence.

Putin? how about Swift? At least Putin could be voted person of the year via "the worst" Swift - be cause she's pretty??? LAme!

Please let it not be Taylor Swift, please let it not be Taylor Swift, please let it not be Taylor Swift, please let it not be Taylor Swift, please let it not be Taylor Swift, please let it not be Taylor Swift, please let it not be Taylor Swift, please let it not be Taylor Swift, please please please pleeeeeeeeeze.

She goes to a dentist in my office building. I don't like her.

Taylor Swift person of the year ?

Just wow.

that's all I got.

Putin???? Wtf!???? Goodell? Taylor swift? I will never take Time seriously ever again.

Taylor Swift? for what? It's not like she's Elvis or the Beatles completely changing the way we think about music.

I think they nominated Putin just to give it to Swift. Bring him down a peg.

That has to be the worst list of nominees, especially the ferguson "protestors". Seriously?!?!

These are all terrible choices. Taylor Swift, hahaha. Putin??

Not sure if this means no or yes, but Putin was (of that bunch anyway) clearly the most influential person in the world in 2014.

Taylor Swift? Like, OMG really.

If it took Tim coming out officially for anyone to realize the man was gay they are blinder than Stevie Wonder and somehow more deaf than Helen Keller. :D

That having been said the rest of the list isn't much better. Ferguson protestors? Give me a break. Roger Goddell.... same. Taylor Swift, why? Did she have less boyfriends this year? Ebola caregivers, no offense but this is the JOB you signed up for. Wish I got an award everyday for that.

Honestly of any of what is listed Jack Ma is the most interesting and surprising. His interview about his newfound fame and fortune hit home as him being someone who doesn't want the spotlight or notoriety, he just wants to continue living in peace, do what he loves, and have a decent life. Was pretty and pleasantly surprised to still see a "human being" in a position of power like he is in.

My $.02.

At least Putin has a backbone. Swift .... Wtf?

Cook has been a runner up for Time person of the year right?? Though I would debate that he has actually done much while he has taken over, like flying autopilot. While not a bad thing to be honest, I have to admit innovation has been lacking since Jobs roadmap dried up.

Actually for the Beats deal alone, he should be removed from the list......

Right up there with Taylor Swift and Putin? Wow... Such company.

WTF Taylor Swift and Putin???

Taylor Swift is extremely hot. That's my vote.

Taylor Swift? TAYLOR. SWIFT?

Em ... ok.

Even if it's by influence, not likability (Hitler won in 1938 for example), Swift is not an influential musician. She is yet another bland pop artist of the last few years. She has absolutely nothing to contribute musically, her lyrics are entirely concerning superficial personal matters, and she hasn't done anything remarkable outside of her successful career.

I mean, how could she be nominated for person of the year when people like Richard D. James, Thom Yorke or Marshal Mathers never having won in the past? Love them or hate them, artists like these have had profound influence on contemporary music as a whole.

It would be an embarrassment to humanity to give someone so disposable such high praise.

Swift is not influential musically. She is another bland pop artist in a sea of bland pop artists.

Richard D James? Thom Yorke? Marshal Mathers? Andre 3000? Kanye West?

I don't even like all of those artists but I'll be damned if I didn't admit that they have been hugely influential musically.

Swift does not even deserve to be in the same category as game changers like these.

You are banned.

For life.

;)

Besides some teeny boppers, precisely who has Taylor Swift influenced? I do not understand her inclusion in this list.

Taylor Swift? LMAO

Is this a joke list? As in, something leaked as satire??? Putin, Goodell, Taylor f'n Swift, Tim Cook. WTH have they done?!?!

Let's skip all the outside stuff and go to the mac part. Why is Tim Cook on here. What has he done besides crunch numbers and hype up a year of unbelievable products which really was just another similar year to any other for Apple?

Look, I love Apple. But let's be real here. Tim Cook has done nothing to deserve this. Yes, he came out about his sexuality. But even he, didn't make a big deal about that and most everyone already knew.

From the people who chose 'you' to be the person of the year in 2006, comes the nominees for 2014, including the Russian president Vladimir Putin, and pop artist Taylor Swift.

The Ebola caregivers certainly couldn't be included, because that is a collective group of people, not one individual.

I'm guessing they will chose someone controversial and illogical from our point of view. If my prediction is true, then it shall be dubbed CRIME Magazine by yours truly.

Please, not Taylor Swift. She got the cover last month, that was enough.

Taylor Swift was easily the most influential person in music in 2014. Who cares if you don't like her music (I'm personally not a fan). But the facts remain, she was the only artist in the past decade to sell 1.2 million copies of her album within the first week. The runner up for that award in the past 10 years was her previous album in 2012. Most artists these days barely crack 250K with their first week of sales.

When the top selling album of 2014 and 2002 through 2014 suddenly disappears from the number one music streaming platform in the world, along with her back catalogue of albums, it is bound to shake up the music industry. Spotify pays artists cents to the dollar for streaming revenue. Taylor Swift removed her entire catalogue to take a stance against the music giant to renegotiate the way it treats all musicians and how they earn streaming revenue.

Influential is not always synonymous with your particular taste in music. Know the facts.

If anything he was the one, more than anyone else, who kept Jobs and Ive in line from approving products with a 2% profit margin but even better built than what we ended up with. He's always been a numbers guy and continues to be. Can we give him the award based on how many Chinese and Taiwanese families he facilitates great working conditions for and an amazing quality of life at 80-100 hours a week of work for with his number crunching abilities? Waving a rainbow around doesn't mean you still can't be a crook, Cook.

Sorry, I call it like I see it and know it. <stir stir stir>

Not trying to start a war here, so please don't take this as anything other than an interesting discussion :)

Tim Cook may not be a product guy, or a visionary, but he doesn't have to be, Apple has enough of those, who don't need to be distracted by also being CEO. After all, didn't Cook basically run Apple so Jobs could focus on what he wanted to? So Jobs didn't have to worry about running the nuts and bolts of the company?

'Anti Jobs' moves like the iPhone 5C, or Maps, or bendgate can't be accurately labeled 'anti Jobs'. You've probably seen the internal presentation with reference to 'low cost iPhone based on the iPod touch'. Services isn't Applea strong point: look at MobileMe. And, obviously there's Antennagate which was worse than the over blown iPhone bending stories we heard. Three examples that happened while Steve was CEO.

Didn't Steve have to be forced (for want of a better word) into having third-party apps on the iPhone?

Also, didn't he claim to conceive ideas like a touch keyboard using a multitouch glass display, that weren't his ideas?

Yup I actually agree with this and:

a) I don't like Taylor Swift's music* and;

b) Not that this should matter but others have brought this up, I don't find her that hot.

I DO agree with her stand against Spotify.

Similar reasoning for other inclusions on the list, influence NOT likability.

*Currently listening to Liz Phair's album "Exile in Guyville" a much more talented and yes hotter singer than Taylor Swift.:apple:

Yes this, I wish people would stop making Jobs as some kind of infallible saint.

And let's be fair the only thing the Beatles objectively have to Taylor Swift, One Direction, Rihanna etc. is that they got there first and that Lennon wrote the songs (although so does Taylor to be fair).

Musically the Beatles are basically a bunch of guys singing love songs in front of backing music.

Putin, Person of the Year?

Might as well nominate Kim Jong Un, too.

Putin is the most powerful man on the planet (or among the most powerful) and was either directly or indirectly related to a whole lot of huge news stories throughout this year.

It's not necessarily a good thing when you're selected as Person of the Year. I don't think anyone would claim Putin to be an especially good man, and if it serves as any consolation, Hitler was the most powerful man on the planet at one time, too, and he won Man of the Year in 1938.

Edit: Someone beat me to it. Curses.

Roger Goodell? The Washington Redskins, and the Adrian Petersen and Ray Rice abuses obliterated any character and credibility he or the NFL ever had.

TIME shouldn't have even taken the time (pun intended) to consider him.

BL.

The "person the year" is supposed to reflect the person our group of people that had the biggest influence on the world this year. While anyone related to the NFL had a big influence in America, that influence wouldn't extend past our borders. Cook on the other hand may make since he did release the biggest seeking phone of the year, of course that happens every year, and I personally don't think it's a great reason.
Personally I would go with Ebola docs or Kim Jun il

Why not Putin, Hitler got the honour of being Time's Person of the Year 1938.
Adolf Hitler: Man of the Year, 1938

Greatest single news event of 1938 took place on September 29, when four statesmen met at the Führerhaus, in Munich, to redraw the map of Europe. The three visiting statesmen at that historic conference were Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain of Great Britain, Premier Edouard Daladier of France, and Dictator Benito Mussolini of Italy. But by all odds the dominating figure at Munich was the German host, Adolf Hitler.

Führer of the German people, Commander-in-Chief of the German Army, Navy & Air Force, Chancellor of the Third Reich, Herr Hitler reaped on that day at Munich the harvest of an audacious, defiant, ruthless foreign policy he had pursued for five and a half years. He had torn the Treaty of Versailles to shreds. He had rearmed Germany to the teeth— or as close to the teeth as he was able. He had stolen Austria before the eyes of a horrified and apparently impotent world.

Being gay in a world where gays and lesbians are still persecuted or killed for who and what they are is sure as hell a big deal. And for someone who the head of one of the biggest companies in the world to come out as gay is a big deal. That gives others hope that it can and will get better.

BL.

Except a white, hugely rich boss of the world's biggest company is hardly going to be persecuted is he? It is just politically correct BS and is probably seen as condescending and patronising by Tim.

Gays have always wanted equal rights - so why does being gay make you deserving of an accolade?? Why not pick any random hetero guy/girl and put them on the front for being hetero?

Putin, no matter how much we pretty much all hate him, is globally more relevant to politics and international policies than all of the other candidates.

From his behind-the-curtain actions in Ukraine, to his obscene spending for the Sochi Olympics, for his anti-gay, anti-feminist, anti-democratic stances, for his belligerent attitude as the "leader of the most powerful nation on Earth", for backing Syria's ongoing civil war and preventing the UN/the West from intervening, etc. The list goes on.

We all hate him, but we also love to talk about how much we hate him. Remember, the Time award isn't for the most likeable person, it's about the most talked about (in good or bad). The only thing that doesn't sit well with me how much Putin would probably love to be man of the year (again).

What's with all the Putin Hatin? He's doing everything I would do if I was the leader of Russia and NATO was slowly surrounding my country. His behavior is very rational.

So you would make 100% sure that those countries still somewhat neutral run towards NATO-membership as fast as they can, while isolating yourself and pushing your country into deep recession, all over a god-forsaken penisula and a handfull of ancient warships ?

Putin's problem is that he is a quite good tactical thinker, but completly lacks strategy.

Putin in my opinion is not that influential just aggressive, his influence has reduced massively on the international stage because of how he is running Russia, trying to bring back the old Union and doesn't like it when former members decide to be part of something different. At the same time he is losing respect from other nations residents for restricting free speech, freedoms and rigging elections in Russia. It really is amazing what you can do when you control the media and take some topless photos of yourself...

Tim cook comes out as a homosexual, and Vlad Putin enacts a law to prohibit such actions.

#Bendgate.

Who cares what Time has to say about anybody or anything? When was the last time you read Time magazine? For me that was like decades ago.
