Why anyone on earth has the slightest interest in this product is beyond me.

The Apple watch is the answer to a question nobody asked.

Anyone who thinks different than you MUST be wrong, right toughguy?

I didn't say anybody was wrong. I said I have no clue why anyone would want this thing.

I mean... seriously. I don't know why a single person could ever possibly need or want this. What is the point? It's just such an absurd product, in my opinion.

What's next? The iToothbrush? Sorry, but I have no use for accessing emails on my toothbrush.

So that's why Mac and iPhone sales are greater than ever? One of the reasons for Watch's "premium price" is the build quality and materials used.
Using premium build quality and materials for a device that will become electronically obsolete decades before it physically wears out is wasteful... and supports the claim of being a "boutique" item that some/many make.

One more thing I have to remember to charge (that won't conveniently be docked in my car to/from the office).

If you begin relying on this for anything productive, it's going to quickly become a hassle.

Think I'll stick with my automatics. :)

Agreed. Functions I don't need. I'd have to remember to charge it daily. Four bills plus to even get one. It requires a nearby iPhone to do much. So far I've seen nothing in the Apple Watch that would make me drop a dime on it.

I've had my doubts about particular Apple products before but this is different. I wasn't sure if Apple could make a better phone than the big boys, until I saw one. I wasn't sure if Apple could do better in the music player market, until I saw one. I wasn't sure Apple could make a tablet that would sell when others had tried and failed, until I saw one. The Apple watch though is out and the more I learn of it the bigger the disaster I think it will be. This is Apple's Operation Market Garden. They think they can make anything and it will sell fantastically because that's the way its worked for over a decade. This time though there just isn't enough actual substance, actual function, actual value to back it up. Oh they will sell some. A lot more people will look at it, ooh and ahh over how pretty it is and then walk on by. Of those they do sell, I suspect more than a few will end up in the jewelry box or sock drawer after a few months.

I really think Apple is going to take a bath on it.

That's actually a very interesting point. One that I hadn't thought of before.

I do admire Apple's build quality though. I think it's a major reason for the strength of Apple's resale value.

What it needs is a failsafe mode where there's enough power to drive the display and a clock app. That way when there's no juice left to do anything exciting it reverts to a watch instead of just being a wrist limpet.

YUP! That is exactly what needs to be done. I currently wear a wrist watch daily. If this functionality were available, I would be much more interested.

"You're going to wind up charging it daily," he said, declining to provide a specific battery life for the device as Apple is still examining how people use it.

11am charge

3pm charge

7pm charge

followed by over night charge

????

or

2pm charge

then overnight charge

or just one charge at night?

so many possibilities from one quote. How many times a day?

That makes zero sense. Apple has one of the best records in the CE biz of making easily recyclable products. But go to Walmart and pick out the biggest POS $65 Android tablet loaded with "Jellybean," and not updatable. It will likely last even less time than the iPad 2 the next aisle over. But it's plastic shell, decidedly not of a premium build quality, will last forever if not recycled. Same goes for the mercury laden circuit board inside.

So please tell us what the heck you are talking about? All modern CE devices have shorter life spans than the sum of their parts. It's just a fact that tech moves a lot faster now than ever before. But never before have people made a concerted effort to take their obsolete devices to a recycling center where 95% of the parts can be remade into something else and the toxic parts can be properly disposed of to cause the least harm to people and environment.

Not surprised and not bothered, either. The Apple Watch is going to be awesome, so I'll be using it quite a bit. Getting a full day out of it is enough for me! Can't wait for pre-orders. :apple:

Good morning Tim.
I bet you can't wait for the pre-orders.
The revenue float will be a lot longer than a day.
Trillions in the bank. :apple:

Not sure how you read all that. Daily has a common meaning of "once a day," as in a daily newspaper, daily shower, daily jog, daily commute to work, etc.

An honest reading of Cook's statement is that one will need to charge it before going to bed. What Cook does not say is what time he expects people to go to bed.

If my watch can't last a full 24 hours then its pointless. I shouldn't be telling people I can't give you the time because my watch battery died.

I don't mind charging it at night when its not being worn, but anything more is just stupid and people shouldn't buy into it.

They should have 2 battery packs, one for smart watch, and it will fallback to a simple digital watch so at least it can tell time.

how is this watch not geeky??

It's a v.1 product. Of course it's geeky. So what?

If you walked around with:

an original iPod -- people looked at you like you were a geek b/c you were (I proudly had one b/c 5,000 songs in my pocket... Wow! I didn't care what strangers thought)

an original iPhone -- people looked at you like you were geek b/c professionals had Palms and BBs. The iPhone was a toy. (I proudly had one b/c it had the most amazing web browser I'd seen in a phone - 2G made it a tad slow, but I endured, but that's what geeks do.)

an iPad -- people looked at you like you were a geek b/c why can't you just read a book or magazine made of paper like the rest of the world and use a laptop for everything else, even web browing. (I proudly had one because my iPhone's screen was too small and my MBP too heavy, I had to do some workarounds but didn't mine b/c that's was geeks do.)

Of course today none of these products in there advanced generations are considered geeky. They are as mainstream as apple pie and vanilla ice cream.

a daily charge going by your interpretation means once in the day. And we know its an overnight charge. So two. Maybe I'm wrong and your right. Who knows. The iPhone is a daily charge... but not to everyone.

ps.. my reading was honest.

"Wind up"

Interesting choice of words

Either Apple, or a third party, should design an attachment that can charge the phone by a winding mechanism. I think they would be popular. Wind-up radios have existed for many years so I don't see why this would not be feasible.

No micro-Solar charging panel on the watch? No built-in motion-induced charging mechanism like other "self-winding" watches?

People have said this about every Apple product. Go back and look at the initial comments about the iPod, iPhone and iPad. I'm not saying Watch will for sure be a hit just that this is not the first time comments like this have been made about a new Apple product.

----------

It's ok, you can still buy one. :):

And others can choose not to buy one. :)

When it's brand new. After a couple months you'll be charging it at lunch.

:apple:

I guess you got used to the **** Android phone so I feel for you a bit. My wife charged her iPhone 4 daily since she bought it 4 years ago. Nowadays she still charge it daily. The battery may very well got worse but it's hardly noticeable.

----------

The Apple Watch is one of the geekiest things I've ever seen.

You're seeing it wrong. :p

True. The difference is that in all my years of using Apple products (started with an Apple IIc in the '80s), this is the first time I really think Apple screwed up on a product. I've had my doubts on a few Apple products until I saw one. I've been very impressed by some products that turned out to fail. I even tried to justify the puck mouse. I admit to a strong bias toward Apple and what they make. That said I think they totally screwed the pooch on this, and I've never felt this way about anything Apple ever made. We'll see though, I could be wrong. But where I could see the value of other products once the details and pictures came out, even if it wasn't something I might use, with the Apple Watch I just don't. The more I see, the more I DON'T see the value of one, don't see it being a success. I have never been as pessimistic on an Apple product as I am on this one. I see chrome and glitz and style but no substance that would make it worth the money, make it worth adding to my life. I really feel the Apple Watch could be the companies New Coke. Their Edsel.

But I very well could be wrong.
