How will the second gen be much better without an massive improvement in battery tech. At most, they'd get a slight improvement in the blue tooth chips and maybe 30% if going to 14nm. That's giving a few hours more, not a full day more anyway.

Don't be so sure. Say what you will about Samsung, but their Tizen platform for watches stretches that battery life to the 3-4 day area with moderate usage, realistically. This is on the Gear 2 Neo w/ a 300mAh battery.

There's plenty of fat to shave on both of the major platforms (Android Wear, Apple Watch). The LG G Watch R is starting to wander into the 2 day territory with more than moderate usage. I just wish it hadn't been designed to look like a blah every day watch.

First and foremost, the Apple Watch needs to look good.

----------

The most important thing is that the Watch needs to look good.

Maybe it's just me or maybe it is because I am not paid by Apple to applaude the design like some fashion magazines...but the iWatch is, well, a good looking smartwatch. It is however not a good looking watch...plus, despite what Cook says, with the screen off (which will be all the time not in direct use....hopefully for battery life sake) it still looks geeky as hell.

I for one would have much preferred the look of a moto 360...but I have to admit that I am into big watches anyway ... obviously as it's mostly a matter of taste: YMMV ;-)

Why is it not waterproof?(!!)

I would take the one to the left, and use it for sports, if it was waterproof. Great for surfing, windsurfing, kayaking, sailing and running.

"Since the Apple Watch requires daily charge cycles, users are given a more intimate experience of sitting down with their Apple Watch and waiting for it. iPhone users familiar with this feature would be pleased to know that charging their Apple Watch will work seamlessly through their daily routines. Consciously checking on the remaining battery life often allows users to gain a personal connection with their Apple Watch."

These Jony Ive skits are getting really tired.

Forget buying the first gen model.

Oh please. I'll have 2 first gens and probably the same of the second gens.

I already have 28 Watches. That's the thing with them they are collectable bits of jewellery. As it is I want about 3-4 of these already.

They do need a better men's premium version. The Steel and Space grey are nice but what about Titanium or Ceramic

The Apple Watch is one of the geekiest things I've ever seen.

And what's your problem? Us geeks inherited the earth about 20 years ago. Jacks are flipping burgers at their McJobs

----------

The problem with Apple watch is that its trying to be everything, yet it isnt anything.

It's possibly the best fitness watch. Possibly the most usable smart watch. Possibly the Fastest smartwatch.

Whatever it will certainly will be the most SUPPORTED and UPDATED smartwatch...

Most Android things get made, sold in various numbers and then completely passed over and forgotten with no updates at all. The Most popular devices get updates like the G5 etc. The Cheap devices are left on the original OS and even bugs don't get fixed.

This is true... but It doesn't actually do anything though does it... and there is no software for it.

One day soon there will be an entire course syllabus in Business school taught regarding the blind epic fail of this device.

Oh dear... like the iPhone you mean?

iPhone may well become Apple's next Newton.
There is no likelihood that Apple can be successful in a business this competitive.
There's no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance. It's a $500 subsidized item

Yes.. Look how much of disaster that's been.

And the same happened with the iPad, iPod, iMac, MacPro in fact everything Apple have ever done... and yet they still mention the Newton or the Apple camera, devices from the 90s that were ahead of their time - even the Cube was only a failure due to expense and manufacturing issues. Actually sold a fair amount at the time.

What I do think will happen is the V2 will be slimmer - using the same straps. But I bet they won't come out for 18 months.

I think this a design failure, is one area that I think other competitors will look to leverage. I'm sorry but a 12 to 24 hour battery for a watch just won't cut it.

Again apple chose form over function and its impacting the actual usage or utility of the product.

Samsung Unveils $299 Galaxy Gear Smart Watch With One-Day Battery Life

Yeah, at that time everyone expected Apple to come out with a watch that would last 2-3 days on a charge. If they can only get a day of usage, with no Always on Display.....

Say what you will about the Moto360 being a fail, the thing lasts over 24 hours when not using Ambient Display... Apple can't possibly get worse battery life than the Moto360...

"Wind up"

Interesting choice of words

I know! When I first glanced at the headline my immediate thought was you have to wind the watch to charge it? WTF? Then reality set in and it finally made sense.

Form over function? Huh? How is the form of this product responsible for poor battery life? I suppose Apple could have chosen an e-ink display ala Pebble but who would really want that? And Android Wear watches aren't using e-ink displays. Cook says you'll likely be charging it every night because you'll be using it so much. What does that have to do with form? My guess is Cook is being conservative on battery life so the watch gets better battery life than Apple advertised rather than the opposite. When the Almost 360 came out the battery life was horrible, but a software update made big improvements to battery life. Why is that not possible with Watch?

The Apple Watch will be a dud product by Apple standards. Too feminine for men, too masculine for women. It'll mostly be metrosexuals and tom boys who end up buying this watch.

I'm not sure what folks were expecting. They are bound by current battery technologies just like everyone else. I'm sure the engineers are doing the best they can with what they have.

*shrug*

I wasn't expecting more. However, there are plenty who honestly believe(d) that Apple wouldn't release a watch that had the same limitations as Samsung, LG and Motorola. That those watches were big fails because no one wants to have a watch that dies after a day and needs constant recharging.

I suspect many will balk. But then, like with most things, it will become "no big deal" because they charge their phone every night too.

Personally - I'm not interested in this new breed of smart watches. I do have a pebble and it's more than enough "information" at my fingertips. My opinion and desires might change. But for now - I prefer to keep my computing functions on my phone. Simple alerts on my wrist are more than enough.

I think the initial sales will be good, but then as people start using it, they'll find the short comings, especially for the premium price they're charging.
