With the iPhone X they created new price points (up of course). It sold well so for the iPhone Xs they carry on with the same price points. It's logical. The Xs Max is a new device so again they've now set the new price points for it.
They don't care who buys them and if customer X or Y can't afford them! As long as they sell enough the price points will stay the same.
At the next major iteration when they come up with new stuff ala Face Id, 1GB storage option, 5G, Flexible screens, etc... the price points will increase again.
This won't change until their quarterly profits go down significantly but we're sure going towards the US$2,000 price points.
Note: They didn't make the mistake twice with the Watch Edition... Disappeared quickly for Series 2 as it must have tanked in spectacular fashion!
