With the iPhone X they created new price points (up of course). It sold well so for the iPhone Xs they carry on with the same price points. It's logical. The Xs Max is a new device so again they've now set the new price points for it.
They don't care who buys them and if customer X or Y can't afford them! As long as they sell enough the price points will stay the same.
At the next major iteration when they come up with new stuff ala Face Id, 1GB storage option, 5G, Flexible screens, etc... the price points will increase again.
This won't change until their quarterly profits go down significantly but we're sure going towards the US$2,000 price points.

Note: They didn't make the mistake twice with the Watch Edition... Disappeared quickly for Series 2 as it must have tanked in spectacular fashion!

Apple's marketing is top notch when they can convince you that $749 starting for the stripped down Xr is affordable when it's comparable to a $300 Android device. On top of that, they still punish you with kiddy crayola colors like on the <$100 children's Amazon Fire devices instead of Xs' adult color options. And, if they truly wanted to serve everyone they would've kept the affordable SE line instead removing it and forcing everyone to pay the new higher Apple tax.

The Xr is available in black and white. Is that not adult enough for you? It also has the same Camera as the Xs, just not dual, Portrait Mode, FaceID, and the A12 beast.

Apple customers don't want to run Android, even if it's $300. If you're upset about $300 vs $1,000, how do you explain the Note 9 ($999) versus the $300 Android. That's an even worse value story because you can't say you prefer iOS since they both run Android.

I guess for your average consumer a midranger is more than plenty to meet their needs, and an iPhone 7 is a very good midranger for £449. If you want something a bit more the 8 or XR offer differing priorities in the upper midrange from £600-£750. If you’re someone that really wants the flagship, it’s likely tech is a passion of yours so you will be willing to pay more - and basically subsidise the R&D and initial higher component and tooling costs associated with the bleeding edge. The Xs/Max don’t cost upwards of £1,000 because Apple want them to be ultra exclusive, they cost that because Apple want a certain margin from them over and above what they cost to design, build, ship and market...

No it doesn't :) I've provided the calculation, feel free to provide a correction to it if you disagree. Only thing I didn't include was the exchange rate, I used Oanda for that today where 1 EURO gets you 1.10250 or put differently the kiosk rate based on interbank rate +5%. Depending on your bank card you may get a couple of percent discount on that, but naturally you don't give your bank card to a friend to buy one, and thus kiosk aka cash rate seemed a reasonable assumption.

Right, take New York for example which would be the most likely place anyone I know would be visiting. The VAT on an iPhone there is 8.875% so that would it make the $999 iPhone XS cost $1087.66

When you convert that to Euro it is €931.58 (see attached photo). The phone costs €1,179(VAT incl.) in Ireland and €1,179 minus €931.58 is €247.42. So even with a bad exchange rate, I’ll be saving well over €200. PEACE

Everyone's needs and budget will be different, but all I know is that I always used to get the newly released flagship iPhone model every single year up through 2016. I skipped getting one altogether in 2017 and now this year, I instead went with the iPhone 8 because it honestly does everything that I need for it to even though I could afford to pay more. I'm sure there will be some out there that will fork over $1,449 for the 512GB XS Max, but my days of getting the new flagship iPhone every year are definitely over.

I'm still holding onto my iPhone 6S. The 7 didn't impress me, and I didn't want to invest in Face ID in its first generation, so I skipped the X as well.

I feel like the 6S is struggling to keep up these days, and the new models look nice, so I'm ready to pull the trigger.

I have not bought a launch day iPhone since the 4S and instead bought last gen devices since then, and this time I was all set to buy the 512GB XS Max but at $1449, I'm starting to have second thoughts...

Maybe getting a used iPhone X 256GB will be in my future.

That is what I did. I got the iPhone X just a few weeks ago. Got a smoking deal on them. Yes, its nice to get the latest and greatest but the phones have gotten so good now. I do like the idea of the adjustable Bokeh, but I can get that with the Focos app. Its really awesome. So I'm not really missing much. I'd like to keep this phone until Apple rolls out 5G phones with triple rear cameras to improve noise. That in my opinion will be the next revolution in camera phones.

In this day and age 64GB should not be an option. This pricing model is nothing but self serving.

Please explain, I have an X64gb and don’t even use half that storage.

Music and pictures are in the (i)Cloud and everything else doesnt take up a lot of space.
I have huge playlists, 4 pages of apps and a ton of pics dating back to 2009 all accessible anywhere I go. And not even 32GB used.

What are y’all doing with all that storage in the time of LTE and Cloud?

First time saying this, I honestly think it's time for Tim to get out of the spotlight.

I think Tim has already done this. At product launches, Tim is the emcee of the event, but he lets other team members do the presentations. That's really smart. He knows he's not Steve Jobs and he doesn't try to be.

So apparently 2018 is 1984. It's very Orwellian to say they want to serve everyone with their price range, but then have their lowest-price offering currently available at a higher price than their cheapest option used to be. War is Peace. Ignorance is Strength. And More Expensive is Cheaper.

Never buying a phone with a notch.

I'm going to buy my son an iPhone SE before they are all gone. $349 is my budget for a teen's phone.

I wonder what would happen if Apple finally adds the in-screen fingerprint reader. Will they call it the next big thing after telling people that Touch ID is not as secure as Face ID? I guess they'll stick to the notch even when other manufacturers have 99–100 percent body to screen ration ;)
Who has a 100% body to screen ratio?

You mean the Note 9 with a forehead and chin or the several Android phones with a notch, but no FaceID?

I miss the old days when carriers subsidized, a phone was cheap with the subsidized prices, and they did annual upgrades.

I'm frequently in areas not served by mobile data so I can't rely on any of that. I'm genuinely surprised at all the responses here suggesting that 64GB is plenty. I have to be careful or I will run out of memory on my current 256GB device. I'm well jelly of my gf's Samsung with memory card slot. Would solve a lot of problems. Memory is very cheap so I just don't understand why this is part of a tiered pricing structure anymore.

My opinion not all people like big phones. This was a big bad decision apple made. I was expecting the next gen i8 /SE to be the same size but what a disappointment
