In this day and age 64GB should not be an option. This pricing model is nothing but self serving.

If you use iCloud for media and photos/video and are often near fast Internet, 64GB is more than enough.

The larger storage options are mostly for people who do not use iCloud and/or have poor connectivity and have to be able to store a lot of media and data on their phones.

I'm glad they are providing options for both types of users; I was worried they'd keep the phone storage at 64/128 forever and just tell people "use iCloud". iCloud isn't an option for everyone.

As an old codger who paid £680 for a 128k RAM floppy disk (400k) tiny mono screen Mac in 1985 the new iPhone could be £50,000 and it would still be a bargain compared to that!

This mentality is baffling. The vast majority of users aren't even using 64GB. It's 2018, internal storage is all but irrelevant.

Then why provide a 512GB option I wonder. Why design a chip that boasts the 512GB support? It’s relevant because with the new camera features people will have more 4K videos and high def photos on their phones.

After taxes, most of the Apple products have gotten to a price that just isn't worth it. That, and the strong dollar is just cherry on top with Apple's currency conversion.

I think it has effectively pushed me into keeping my products well into 3-4 years or more range.
Thankfully, just a mid cycle battery replacement and they actually do last that long so it's win-win.

Strong dollar? You must be living in Space or Turkey.

I like Tim Cook and I do think that he is a very good CEO (numbers prove it) but saying things like that with a straight face is a serious skill of his...

The iPhone Xr is pretty similar to the Huawei P20 Lite. The iPhone has FaceID and the A12 Bionic, but the P20 Lite has a 2280x1080 screen and fingerprint reader. They both have 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, but the P20 Lite has Micro SD slot upto 256GB and a dual camera setup. Yes, the P20 Lite has copied the notch and vertical cameras from the X, but it's not a bad looking phone. The prices... iPhone Xr £749.99, Huawei P20 Lite £279.95. Is the iPhone £470 better? I honestly couldn't say so. If any family members were looking for a cheap iPhone and were contemplating the Xr, I would honestly have to recommend the Huawei.

Indeed it is, but still... he’s about to literally destroy millions of X units (the “most innovative phone ever”) just 1 year after launch in pursuit of profit. Gotta acknowledge that.

Do you really think the phones are going to be destroyed?

They are going to sell remaining inventory in the refurbished store. Why would they destroy good product?

I've bought a new iPhone at launch every year since the 3GS. It started out as $200*, then $400*, then $600, then $650, then $750, then last year $1000. This year the phone I would get is $1150. They say a frog won't jump out of a pot if you heat it slowly, Tim Cook has priced me out of the pot.

*due to how contracts used to work in the US

Yeah, in Poland 4S started at 2700PLN on launch (including VAT). iPhone Xr starts at 3750PLN and Xs at 4980PLN. Last year's iPhone 8 starts now at 2980PLN.

In other words, a couple years back you could have had flagship at a lower price than today's last year's tech.

Speaking for everyone there? I use 25 gb out the 64, it is plenty, for most people.

Sounds like your speaking for most people too... :-\

IMO, 64GB is far too little. A imagine a lot of people may have their photos and music syncing to their iPhones - those two items alone can take up significant space.

YMMV.

From a business perspective, the iPhone Xr seems amazing. It's $250 less than the Xs but seems to lack more than $250 worth of components (especially once you account for margins on each component). It doesn't have an OLED screen, ForceTouch, a secondary camera, the thinnest bezels, or stainless steel body, but it's still ostensibly a thing of beauty.

The most important thing is the perception of value between the Xr and the Xs.
It costs $250 less and the customer doesn't know how much an OLED panel costs or if the stainless steel is more expensive.
They kept Xs at the same high price so Xr seems like a bargain to the average user, even if it is $50 more than iPhone 8 was.
You get the same design edge-to-edge and great performance for a much better price. It is LCD? I bet the majority of customers don't even care, they have LCD on their iPhone 8, 7 and 6s so it isn't a step backwards. No dual camera? Right, but thanks to the A12 they can have a fake bokeh effect pretty enough even with a single camera. 3D touch? I don't think it is so important to the average customer, you long press on the control center and you're done. Very few people will miss it, and it makes me wonder if 3D touch will still be there in 2019 since they removed it on what is mean to be the mass market product.
And it has colours! You only miss the gold option, but you have black and white and other 4 colours to chose from.

Wages and salaries are not what they were 30 years ago, yet Apple has the audacity to jack prices of their entry level phones over time.

Makes sense.

I keep saying, the best way to play the iPhone upgrade game, is to wait it out. You can get a iPhone 7 Plus now for 650. Yeah, its a 2016 phone, but I still see people like my sibling rocking an iPhone 5s, which he just upgraded from an iPhone 5. I have the iPhone X, which I upgraded from a 6s (still have it).
I still have my 6S+, which I bought after the 7's came out for a reduced price. It works just fine for my needs - which include support for wired headphones. When the battery goes out on it, I'll try to replace it with another 6S+ if they're still in stock. Currently, my provider still offers them new for $550 - likely not much longer. The improved photography on the new models is nice, but if my main reason for spending mega-bucks for a phone was for a fancy camera I'd just fork over for a nice DSLR digital camera and stick with a moderately priced phone.

Then you are obviously far too blinkered to realise that there are other options than Apple for people to use day to day.

No, I just have some friends who use Android and they always seem to be having trouble with their phones.

My techie friends (and myself, if I ran Android would) get along fine. But those who aren't techies can get into trouble very easily with Android. iOS is really good at keeping you from shooting yourself in the foot, which is why I recommend it to all my non-techie family and friends.

Left over iPhone 7s - a bargain at $450. Just remember, it too was at one time "the best iPhone we've ever made".

At one time, the Commodore 64 was the best computer Commodore had made... that doesn't quite work years later ;-) LOL.
