He also pointed out the feature that pings people when they've been sitting for too long, which he sees in use on a daily basis at Apple.

Really, that's the best you've got? I need a $349 device to do that? My phone that's constantly with me can't give me the same reminder?

I suppose for people who need to ask their phone whether it's raining outside...

Heaven forbid anyone actually think, gee, I've been sitting on my butt all day and it's numb, as are my legs. Also, my back is killing me. Without an Apple watch, people would never have the thought to move.

All sensors and measurement devices are extraneous.

Why bother using a fever thermometer when you already know you feel hot? Why test blood-glucose levels when you just came to from a faint? Why bother wearing a watch when it'll get dark when it gets dark?

I disagree. IMO some people pull off being arrogant very well. Steve Jobs comes to mind, for imstance.

No he got away with it because he WAS a genius and contributed much to society. He was still an arrogant jerk and not much loved by people closest to him because of it by his own admission in his bio.

But no one here is a Jobs level anyway. So arrogance is not a good look for any of us.

Why bother having a brain to utilize memory & function if you need all these electronic devices to do what your capable brain can do?

It's disgusting the laziness of people these days and they wonder why they are helpless or go bonkers when they can't find their electronic device to assist them in EVERYDAY, REMIDEAL TASKS.

People are getting dumber by the year and exponentially increases yearly as these "life assist" devices take over their brain functions.

Last time it was checked by a survey, 80% of adults between 18-25 did NOT know the Social Security number!

It's true that being arrogant without having the actual ability to back it up makes you just a dumb bully. But if I may so, your blanket assumption about everyone else's "level" is coming off as a bit... arrogant.

Anyhow, it's just a personal preference, but I find it attractive when someone with a high level of competence gives a well-deserved put down to someone who is bumbling incompetently along. The BBC version of Sherlock, for instance, has the main character doing that to incompetent policemen and clueless clients, and the show's got a wide following of fans who like that aspect of the character. So while I respect that you find arrogance off-putting, please don't assume that everyone else feels the same way you do.

This is a just a variation on the noble savage concept. What humans will lose in memorizing trivial minutae, they will gain many times over in the breadth and depth of the ideas they will be able to analyze with the adjunct of machine intelligence. Of course, if you don't like it, you can move back to the woods and focus exclusively on your "EVERYDAY, REMIDEAL TASKS".

Blood sugar, body temperature and blood pressure are a bit more serious and potentially life threatening. Nice try though.

Like learning how to spell? :p

Yes, we have lost so much because we don't spend all that looking for food :). Now, we can roam grocery stores for 10 minutes and be done with it : that's called progress ;-).

Indeed, we lose some... But gain others. Like hand writing. People are bemoaning we are losing this skill. Well, this skill has been used by humans for a very short time by a very small number of humans as whole. A few hundred years and maybe 10-20% of the planet. So, losing it doesn't mean we are returning to savagery (although my signature is so horrible that indeed It could have been done by an ape :), just moving on to something else.

But expensive watches are attractive or convey status. The apple watch is ugly and heavy, and conveys brand participation--but not really status. Does it do more than tell time? It will tell you your pulse, it will tell you if you have a phonecall or text, and if you squint, you might able to use it for maps.

----------

It depends on your definition of an expensive watch. From what I can see there is nothing less than $3000 on the market today that conveys 'status.' Your $600 Seiko or $1200 Tag is not really a status watch, they are basically a little more than a fashion watch like your $300 Fossil.

If I wanted to buy say a $6000 Breitling, I'd have to do some serious thinking as to whether I wanted to make that investment, versus other life obligations.

However, a few hundred bucks to see if I like living with this Apple Watch more than my traditional watch, that's worth a punt for me. Maybe not for you, maybe not for the person reading this, but for me it is.

As for your assessment of 'ugly' that's subjective. I happen to think Apple have done an excellent job. In fact I think the use of the word ugly is simply misinformed, especially if you've not even seen a real one. For me, I think that a typical Breitling watch is too 'busy' as I like a cleaner look in my watch. But for me to call it 'ugly' just because I like less stuff on the face would be pretty unreasonable.

Steve Jobs famously called the computer a bicycle for the mind.

Here's an amazing 56 second long YouTube clip of Jobs explaining this idea.

You quoted the wrong person - - bawbac wrote that.

Yes, that other post had the spelling error but I was replying to YOUR post about what that OTHER person should be doing with their time. Sorry I confused you, lol. Didn't think it was that hard to figure out that I was joking with you about them.

Clarity breeds coalition.

If my use of the word "ugly" is subjective, then it can't be misinformed--as that implies an objective "informing" standard. I have not seen the watch in person--but the idea i can't draw conclusions from photos of the product is inane.

If you think about the MP3 industry, we weren't the first company to make an MP3 player, there were lots of companies in this. They weren't used very much. They were fundamentally hard to use the user interface was bad and you almost needed a PhD to use them. They're not memorable. I see the smart watch category very much like that. There are several things that are called smart watches, but I'm not sure you could name any. There hasn't been one that changed the way people live their lives. At Apple, that's our objective. We want to change the way you live your life.

I thought the Rio players were quite good. Really, no phd required. The game changer in the digital music market was itunes.

Some people keep posting as if Apple had announced a starting price of $999.

$349 is really not a lot of money for a watch, and this watch basically has a computer inside it.

Next time you are in a department store, look at their watches. Any of the decent ones cost more than that and all they do is tell time inaccurately.

Step into a high end watch retailer and you'll be hard pressed to find anything under a grand, and plenty more than $5K. And most of those mechanical watches are far less accurate than a $10 Casio.

If $349 is a lot of money to you, or you see no value in the previews of this product, then don't buy it.

If your point were true, Apple would just close down their Apple Stores and let people look at pictures of their products online.

There is a world of different between looking at a photo and handling the product yourself.

As for 'ugly' we'll just have to agree to differ. I'm somewhat of a watch enthusiast and have looked at hundreds of high end watches over the years. I think Apple have made a very attractive design.

whenever i am bored, i just log on to macurmors to watch the apple fanboys defend apple products. it never fails

Tim Cook's a great guy, but everything he says is like reading script from a terribly boring play.

I remember when Steve introduced the iPod - A thousand songs in your pocket; iPhone - Apple reinvents the phone. Simple, easy to get, and was true to certain extends.

Then those devices went on to change the way people live their lives, or impacted many lives in meaningful ways.

You don't TELL people its gonna do that. This totally reminds me of Microsoft actually going around telling people they are cool. Or Samsung telling people they are awesome. Or an idiot going around telling people hes really smart.

People's lives are impacted when the product enables them to do so. Not when the marketing team of a company tells people it will.
