Do you read Chinese then? It's a translation. A google one at that.

Many word and phrase carry respect and apologies.

Anyway this is terrible. Much as I am all for the customer. You have a years warranty. This is only going to encourage people to bust their phones a 51 weeks in, get a new phone and have another year warranty.

In fact, there is no apologies at all...

He had no choice but to apologize. Apple had several choices earlier, but they blew it. You can't simply disregard local laws and blow off the government when they call you on it.

HP made some bad calls with China in 2010, and state media called them out on it in much the same way as they are with Apple today. HP lost 50% of all sales in China as a result. It could very well be too late, but they have no choice but to step up or lose... what... about $15 billion in sales?

I'm only going off how I've been treated while in China, and my wife (Who is Shanghainese) and her relatives opinions of the average honest person who lives there, but it leads me to this:

My experience is I wouldn't let China have a more generous policy simply because they're more likely to abuse it.

Any policy is factored into the price. When people abuse it, Apple will just raise their prices.

Stock down over 3% today. Due to this China rift or something else?

I have seen one news article that claimed it was because of iPad Mini trademark rejection which of course is a total BS. It appears that there is an entire industry now that fabricates BS analysis out of whatever real news they see on AP, Reuters, Digitimes etc (Wall St. Cheat Sheet and alike)

Sellers taking advantage of the recent small dead cat bounce to unload on continued unfavorable news.
News last week of layoffs at Foxconn might have had something to do with initiating the recent sell off.
Some analysts are talking about $280-$320 bottom when the market corrects 10-15% later in the year.

After everything that I've read about the importance of China being a new market for Apple, I think it only makes sense to be in a slightly defensive stance. It might appear cool and American to have some Steve Jobs behaving like a complete arrogant ******, but after everything that you hear about China, Apple wouldn't get very far. In the end this means more success for the company, any stock holder should be happy about this decision.

I don't get it. It's not clear to me from this or any related articles what Apple was doing "wrong". They said they already went above and beyond Chinese warranty law... so what are they "apologizing" for, and why change warranty policies? And if they have such a great warranty in China now, how about the rest of the world? Canada has very limited warranties, much like the U.S.

Some facts have been lost after numerous translations and bloggers add their own flavoring on the subject, but basically this is how Apple treat some of their customers in some part of this world:
- they won't service your equipment; they will swap it with a refurbished unit
- if you want them to service it instead of swapping it, you will have to pay for the service charge even if it is under the manufacturer warranty
- these apply to all of their product lines (not only to 4 / 4S)

Scenario: you bought a retina MacBook Pro with Samsung panel a month ago, and you are having some minor keyboard issue. You go to an Apple store and asked for help. The Apple genius tells you that they can swap a "refurbished" unit for you. Will you go for it? You may end up getting an old retina MacBook Pro with the LG panel. Otherwise, you may pay to have them service yours.

I hate how some of the so called professional bloggers phrase this issue. You will see them explicit states that the issue is raised by Chinese government backed media company, which doesn't give us more insight into the subject. For me, I am only seeing a company adjusting its policy to better serve its customers.

Have the fanboys posted "pull out of China" yet;)

No, but for a country that repeatedly adulterates milk and toothpaste with auto coolant and to be looking at a phone's warranty term reeks of pretentiousness.

Here's a story that has gone under the radar:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/03/15/us-china-reforms-capitalaccount-idUSBRE92E05W20130315

Observe two tech companies that are on the list of companies the Chinese are apparently going to allow to transfer large amounts of funds out of the country: Samsung and Intel.

Observe a tech company with a huge cash pile that is not on the list: Apple.

In China it's pay to play, with foreign companies having to cross-license their IP to play. Even Qualcomm has apparently cross-licensed its IP with Huawei. Apple has a couple of very valuable things it can offer, unfortunately, I doubt it is willing to offer either of them. Apple can cross-license its IP including design to Huawei, or it can use Huawei chips in a special version of the iPhone that might win the long sought official access to China Mobile.

It's amusing that a restrictive communist government has better consumer protections it seems than the US. Well, at least in this case....

The Chinese have better warranty coverage than North America. Gotta love it.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease.....

The guy loves to pull his panties down to his ankles every time someone tries to fornicate apple from behind.

This is a mean and unfair thing to say.

The 'devil' made him say it.....;)

Better under Cook than Jobs, like others said, Jobs would have kept quite and Apple looking like an even more arrogant company. Communication is getting better now, something that Apple sucked at.

If your in the wrong, its good to apologize .

It would be far better to not be in the wrong in the first place - it is called performance and execution.
