I've been happy with my Maps app. But the fact Tim Cook apologized and people are still bitching is funny. You can't say or do anything right anymore.

Just wait for the google I/O they will show basically nothing for whatever they call their new OS but show a bungie jumper and will get almost all internet love.

This is a nice start. Of course it doesn't make the Maps any better, but at least we know they are most likely working hard on fixing this mess.

There are a lot of problems to go through though. First of all, in many places the maps don't align with the satellite pictures very well. This causes all kinds of problems, especially when using GPS.

Image

Another major problem seems to be double data. This causes some places to have 2 exactly same layers that are in slightly different places. I found many examples of this especially in Australia. Here the angular green layers don't make any sense anyway, but they are also doubled with slightly different positions.

PLease don't post these pictures showing where maps doesn't work. And please don't acknowledge that an apology is a good start. It upsets people. ;)

<----- The Black Country / West Midlands.

There's a lot of errors with the mapping around here. Most towns aren't labeled, the one's with labels are in the wrong place. POIs are years out of date, in the wrong place or a combination of the two and the satellite images are a blurry pixelated mess.

Apart from that it's alright. ;)

I see. Sorry, I am a relatively new arrival to the UK (been here for 6 years), so I didn't know what the Black Country was.

How did you calculate those 5 years+?

The first commercially available phone to run Android was the HTC Dream, released on October 22, 2008.

This is not even 4 years today.

(Btw, first iPhone went on sale in the United States on June 29, 2007, so for the iPhone it is 5 years+ today). :)

I don't care if it's 4 years and not 5 : it's just way later, and for a product that doesn't provide CORRECT informations in too many places.

1. Apple Maps isn't that bad. Could it be better? Sure. Does it have all of the same level of detail as Google Maps? No. But it's not bad for an infant product.

Infant is irrelevant, and its perhaps not that bad for you, but for some its quite useless as large parts of map area's are simply missing everything but the mayor roads.

2. "They should have just stayed with Google Maps on the back end". Valid point, especially in the short term. But Google has been dragging their feet for far too long in bringing turn by turn to iOS and at some point you have to change the game somehow or the self-fulfilling prophecy about Android having turn by turn and iOS doesn't will never change.
Googl offered apple turn by turn, but it would have costed apple. Apple refused and opted first for apps, and now for built in.

3. "They shouldn't have released the software if it wasn't 100% ready". Is it really that bad? Sure some stuff is off right now, but when you are going to rely on crowd sourcing for building your grid you have to start somewhere. Now's as good a time as any.

They could have brought it in as "apple turn by turn" or "apple 3d maps" together with google maps .
But they had 2 mayor reasons to release it now, Gimmick for an otherwise pale iOS update and surpise google so for months it will be the only maps app people will use.

Once google maps introduces its own app most people will be used to it, or moved onto something else.

You might start thinking about buying good mapping program from one of the dev's in your store. Jobs would have never let that map app out into the wild... You know Tim, Google is off shopping buying up devs from your app store... Taking #1 hits and making them their own.... Just recently my dearly beloved Snapseed was scooped up by Google... You know Tim, you've got an awfully big war chest. Use it to pick up some good devs and quit fussing over patent battles. You'll have no one good left in your sand box at the end if you don't focus on what matters now.

Sincerely a long time mac user and previous employee of the once visionary Apple Computer Inc.

When did Apple start getting into maps? It surely must've been on Steve's watch. Can't put all of this blame on Cook.

looks like the dumb people are out of the Bush works knowing nothing about crowd-sourcing and user data.

speaking of "dumb people" - the expression is "out of the woodwork" - not "Bush work"

....and its much more than a crowd-sourcing issue. Educate on the yourself more thoroughly on the technical issues before posting. It just makes you look, well... dumb.

I don't know about everyone else here, but I for one am sick of the whole "Jobs wouldn't have let this happen" Steve did let something like this happen. Does anyone remember the iPhone 4? It was released with reception problems! The all-mighty Steve jobs allowed a phone to be released that didn't work properly as a phone!!! He also apologized, by releasing a bandaid solution bumper. Is the maps app as good as google, no, will it be... we don't know, but it is a damn good start. Tim/Apple has acknowledged the problem and is obviously working on it. I for one believe that is better customer support than what most consumer product companies offer. Would Steve have let this happen, we don't know. Why? Because he is long gone. Sorry.. that we know for sure.

Apple Maps is a complete cluster-***** and a totally embarrassing episode for post Jobs Apple.

I upgraded to the iPhone 6 and have barely used if since opting for my work's Galaxy S3 simply due to the inaccuracies presented in Apple Maps.

The 2% of Barista fan boiz who are experiencing no issues I wish u well but the 98% who are, I feel sorry for you.

Steve would NEVER have allowed this.

+1 for this! Being a fan of a good product shows a certain amount of technical knowledge. Being an apologist for a terrible terrible mistake just shows a questionable amount of blind misplaced faith

That's asinine.

How's Google's turn by turn?
How's Google's vector maps?

I'd give up both those features for street view and transit information in a heartbeat. You forget that iphones are far more prevalent by population in cities, where people don't use turn by turn. And google's turn by turn works very well on android phones. Apple could have had it too if they *gasp* dealt with some branding. Nice try tho.

Maps aren't even that bad, they're actually quite good in most cases. People need to calm down.

A maps app where the data cannot be trusted is worthless. That's currently where Apple Maps sits.

Sure, 95%, or even 99% of it may be accurate... but if I can't trust it, then I'm obviously never going to use it without double checking a different source.

Maps is a disaster in NYC. It frequently messes up E. XXth St and W. XXth St in business listings. The same is true for north and south. And some roads which traverse boroughs have businesses listed in the wrong borough, and sometimes even New Jersey. It's a joke.

Tim Cook forgot to include info on what the F is going on with the absence of a new iMac

Discontinued.

"Were weren't selling any of the things!"

If they had a product line as deep as dell....sigh, damn too good to be true.

You're right. I actually think he would have let this happen.

Dear navigation neophytes,

I'm glad you are so happy with the new turn-by-turn driving directions in iOS 6. But you do realize that multiple articles have reported that Google was willing to allow the same capability using Google's map database, right?

If Apple had been willing to put its "thermonuclear war" against Google aside for the sake of its customers, we all could have had our cake and eaten it too!

Instead, we get mediocre turn-by-turn and abysmal everything else in iOS 6 Maps.

Apple is reinventing the wheel. Google already has a really really nice wheel. In fact, Google has the BEST wheel. Until iOS 6, the iPhone was all about the BEST user experience. Now, with iOS 6, users get mediocre maps (at best) and apologies.

Disappointing, to say the least.

Mark

Sorry but using words like " fan boiz" immediately invalidates your argument.

Oh and yeah Steve would have released this. He just would have done a better job softening the edges and lowering expectations.
