"The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you."

Apple is driving itself more and more towards the massive consumers, quantity instead of quality. Steve Jobs worked the other way around.

I agree. I particularly respect the way he'd pull successful products from the shelf so as not let them become too volume driven.

Sorry but using words like " fan boiz" immediately invalidates your argument.

Oh and yeah Steve would have released this. He just would have done a better job softening the edges and lowering expectations.

Invalidating arguments without arguments invalidates YOU.

And Steve would never have released this.

That would be the nature of the world today. My generation (I'm 23) believes we should have everything handed to us on a platter and at the first sign of trouble/hardship we b**** and moan.

This goes for consumerism as well. To the guy who said "It may work well for you, but that doesn't mean it works well for 100's of millions of others", that goes the other way as well. And I'd venture a guess that a majority of people haven't had any trouble.

A couple people complain -> the media grabs a hold of it and won't let go -> the competition riles up a huge media circus around it -> now people won't shut up about it and assume that EVERYONE has the same trouble they have....

Sounds a lot like US Elections....

wow, sounds like a lot of truth here. Antenna gate didn;t affect too many people i knew, me included, and yet that was a thunderstorm of bad press.

If they had said this was Beta it would probably have been better but then people would still complain about not having an app out of Beta that they had before.

I use OS5 maps but when i wanted turn by turn, I switched to MapQuest as I like that better, and since Maps didn't do turn by turn.

BTW - I think there's some subtext in this apology.

That being - Apple is going to do everything it can to get Maps "right" - but that it's going to take awhile. LONG enough - that Tim was willing to apologize and offer alternatives vs giving any kind of timeline and/or how many resources he has working on this.

If he believed Maps was going to be a 2/3/4 month fix - I don't believe this is the letter he would have written. My .02

Apple never seems to learn from their mistakes.

FCX was the same thing, as was iMovie and Quicktime player (which has never recovered) before that.

It makes perfect sense that there are times where it is necessary and rebuild from scratch. But doing that takes time, if the initial versions are either missing needed features or just flat out bad, keep the previous version available and make the new one available AS A BETA to anyone willing to try it out. Then switch over when the new version is actually ready for full release.

Really, it's not rocket science. And yet Apple keeps not only releasing products before they are done, they take away the previous versions that were working fine for people. Maybe this time around they'll feel the hurt enough that maybe, just maybe, they finally learn a little something from it.

Good call on bringing out Maps. It had to be done for the long term good due to the limitations Google had put on Apple.

Bad call on the apology. Tim is too nice. Anyone with half a brain should realise that with something so complex dropping it into the deep end is the only real way to test and improve the app. Maps has functioned fine for me. If I were Tim Cook I would have said nothing at all - whingers be damned and can go buy another phone.

Exactly how did Steve work the other way around? Amazing how much revisionist BS we have since Steve died.

These Replacement Apps Have to Go!

Hurry, bring back the regular map apps! Lol

Seriously, it seems as though Apple wanted to provide for its customers more mapping functionality than the previous solution provided (ie turn-by-turn directions). I applaud them for having that as a short term goal. I would rather for them to make an attempt and fail, than to fail to make an attempt.

At least Tim didn't take the Roger Goodell approach and act like there were no issues.

I love Maps

For what it's worth, I love Maps. I love the Siri integration. I love the smooth vector based content, I love the cinematic camera angles.

The data can catch up. The foundation is good.

What's funny is it'll be easier for Google to COPYCAT the things Ilike about Maps than it will be for Apple to catch up with the Data.

I wish they could kiss and make up and rent the data, but I stand with Apple that Google RIPPED OFF iPhone with Android and that needs to be addressed. You can't just spend millions if not billions of dollars to come up with something then watch competitors crank out copies of your technology without doing SOMETHING.

I got royally ripped off by someone once and even though I agreed to the terms just to get the deal overwith, I seethed with resentment that someone who used to broadcast their respect for me would go so low. Google is made up of a lot of good pro-mac guys but they only brought a very small amount of innovation to the table and basically copied the iPhone beyond that. I can totally understand why Apple would at least not want to give them any more publicity.

AND even starting with a copycat product, it at least does give us some outside influence on Apple. Remember, Apple didn't even want to let 3rd parties write Apps. So, the competiton is good. I don't want to see Android go away, but a patent infringement lawsuit that makes them pay to licence the technology they rip off would be fair (Apple pays them to use Google technology)

1. Apple Maps isn't that bad. Could it be better? Sure. Does it have all of the same level of detail as Google Maps? No. But it's not bad for an infant product.

According to Apple Maps, I live inside a Chevron Gas Station (Chevron doesn't have gas stations in Brazil). It is THAT bad.

I am happy with maps ios6

I live in the border of Mexico and USA, when I look at new maps app satelite view on Mexico shows everithing on gray scale. but i find it very acurate, Yesterday i travel to Monterrey Mexico and use for the first time turn by turn directions to diferent adress, Its info its about 2 year old because some streets have change direction, but I could easy get to all directions, I could do it witout it.

Dear navigation neophytes,

I'm glad you are so happy with the new turn-by-turn driving directions in iOS 6. But you do realize that multiple articles have reported that Google was willing to allow the same capability using Google's map database, right?

If Apple had been willing to put its "thermonuclear war" against Google aside for the sake of its customers, we all could have had our cake and eaten it too!

Instead, we get mediocre turn-by-turn and abysmal everything else in iOS 6 Maps.

Apple is reinventing the wheel. Google already has a really really nice wheel. In fact, Google has the BEST wheel. Until iOS 6, the iPhone was all about the BEST user experience. Now, with iOS 6, users get mediocre maps (at best) and apologies.

Disappointing, to say the least.

Mark

Multiple articles reported that Google and Apple attempted to negotiate terms. By your rationale Apple was willing to issue Samsung licenses for their recent court battle. Terms that Samsung would never accept.

Credible sources have stated Google wanted features that Apple would never accept, like prominent branding, and even more user data. The same data Apple needs to build its map application.

Apples Maps in the long run will be better for us (iOS users).

Was a bold move by Apple and all though they haven't quite pulled it off it will be an epic feature.

Steve would've never apologized for a product AND told us to use a competitors product. He probably would've pushed the team harder to work out the kinks before launch, too. Miss him

I wish Steve was still here. Hey, didn't he have a son?

Yes. He also had a wife last seen cuddling with the Clinton's at the DNC so I don't think we'll see any more cutting edge business decisions coming from the Jobs family.Politicians perhaps.

Apple Maps is a complete cluster-***** and a totally embarrassing episode for post Jobs Apple.

I upgraded to the iPhone 6 and have barely used if since opting for my work's Galaxy S3 simply due to the inaccuracies presented in Apple Maps.

The 2% of Barista fan boiz who are experiencing no issues I wish u well but the 98% who are, I feel sorry for you.

Steve would NEVER have allowed this.

Oh did you now?
