Stupid move is more like it!

And, assuming Apple's Maps eventually becomes "epic", it will STILL lack Street View.

With the release of iOS 6, Apple is TAKING AWAY FEATURES.

Happily, I can simply stick with iOS 5. But, for how long before Apple's contract with Google expires completely? Will the original iOS Maps app stop working once the contract expires?

Mark

FWIW I didn't even know GMaps had streetview until a few months ago and i've been using iPhones since the 3GS.

From an education point 3D maps is much more useful.

Asking us to use other apps for the time being? It just doesn't seem right for a company like that to say such a thing.
As a consumer, that's what I expect from a company. A lot of times when I am trying to buy something from a retailer that doesn't have a product I'm looking for (or doesn't have the right size, or right model, etc.) and they recommend a competitor store because they know they might have, makes me respect them more.

From what I have used, Turn by Turn and the maps themselves seem completely fine. It's just the location of shops, bars, hotels and businesses that seem all over the place.

Also, I didn't know maps had street view before.

I've read this letter a few times, and I can't find the part where he offers to let us use the as is Google maps in iOS 6 until Apple's attempt gets better.

It is not just the Google database that is better, it is the search ability. I can put in random keywords, even airport codes and Google will find destinations for me.

Would be nice if my iPhone 4 stopped promting me to upgrade. The removal of Google maps is not something I want to upgrade to.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has published an open letter to customers on the company's website addressing the criticism over the new Apple-powered Maps app in iOS 6. In the letter, Cook apologizes for not meeting expectations and mentions a number of alternative mapping solutions customers may wish to use while Apple is refining its Maps.

Maps aren't even that bad, they're actually quite good in most cases. People need to calm down.

People seem to forget that Google has had nigh on a decade of collecting your personal information to improve their maps. We're all mad because Apple has released a product which on day 1 is ten times better than Google Maps on day one? Every new iPhone release there has to be something for the punditry to label ________gate. This year its maps.

Same with Siri, unless it goes to the Millions of people out there it would remain as beta, even after 20yrs of perfecting the speech & AI.

Recognizing Voice is one thing, knowing what it means i a different ball game, thats Siri, its not perfect but i've yet to find any thing equal or better than that.

Siri is a pretty shell over an existing voice recognition platform called vLingo. I used the same app for years before is was a shocking technical achievement.

It has been on the BlackBerry platform for years which much of the same can be done. Just without the visual "fluff" so to speak. Apple did make some interesting changes but it's still limited to some degree in comparison to what I had on my old 'Berry

Before the instant snarky reply of "buy another BlackBerry lulz" try using one when your fingers don't work as they should.

The iPhone is more accessible to me and having features I use almost daily removed in the update just plain sucks.

You've clearly given this a lot of thought.

I'm not sure that is how I'd read it...
Given it a lot of talk and no trousers more like....

He may even have some valid points, but he made himslef sound like a fanboy that has been dumped by his mummy.... does anyone who can really affect change in relation to any of the debates on these forums actually read any of this stuff?? and do they really give a **** even if they do?? they're capable of generating hundreds of millions of dollars in a single day by selling the exact same products everyone is talking about on here, regardless of whether there are perceived issues with them.

The only way they might start listening is if the moany little ****ers vote with their feet and buy alternatively branded products.... but they're not going to do that are they???

Believe it or not, millions of iPhone users don't care about turn-by-turn but depends on the accuracy of the maps themselves, the POI and public transport info.
Apple could have kept Google Maps as it was, without adding any feature, and developed simultaneously their own dedicated turn-by-turn app. Problem solved.

Tend to agree with you - too many self inflicted injuries. Apple is now recruiting for more map engineers - duh. It would have been a far better move to have hired those extra engineers well in advance of releasing a product that Tim needed to apologize for.

I believe the jury is still out on Tim's performance - all the more as time pushes him into the spotlight.

Innovation & execution....

Lame, Jobs would be pissed

I don't care about the maps thing, it's really not that bad. I don't like Cook seeming like baby and asking for forgiveness. I want to hear about another town hall meeting where he curses the hell out of his employees and tells them to shape up.

Way too soft to lead men like Scott, Phil and Jonathan. With world's most valuable company and 100 billion cash, Apple's biggest threat is disruption from within. Cook's softness will make employees miss Jobs's tough, physical presence. Compare his response to Phil's on aluminum, it is clear they have completely different styles and a battle between Tim and Phil will cause massive damage to Apple.

Steve was a tyrant and was the only one who could have kept the fabulous four together in unity. Cook suggesting competitor product is a very bad decision, Toyota CEO was in tears when he stood up to the podium, but even he did not recommend his customers to buy Honda cars!

But you do realize that multiple articles have reported that Google was willing to allow the same capability using Google's map database, right?

I'm not usually a "source?" guy, but in this case, I've been reading the opposite; or, more specifically, Google was willing to do it "someday, in their own sweet time, whenever, after Androids had won sufficient share through differentiating with this feature..." So do you have a reliable citation supporting what you state? Thanks!

I'm quite confident Apple is going to tack several zeros onto some checks to make sure this issue is rectified as quickly and cleanly as possible. They're sitting on a huge war chest. Most any other company in Apple's position wouldn't have the financial resources to get this fixed quickly. Apple does.

Steve wanted thermonuclear war against Google and it appears Google wasn't willing to give Apple the data they wanted for turn-by-turn. Therefore, this is still war and Apple can dig really deep into that war chest before they even come close to hitting the bottom of it.

In this day and age, accurate mapping technology on smartphones is not simply a nice feature to have. It's critical. I have little doubt that Apple will throw liberal amounts of money at the people who are the best in the mapping industry over the coming weeks and months.

Hmm that's it? It doesn't even feel like a well written letter.

I guess there goes my hope of them admitting defeat and bringing back Google Maps...

Its really as simple as adding the Google app back on iOS 6 since there was another year remaining on their agreement. #justsaying

Tim Cook is an idiot. He's about as sincere about this as he was about "doubling down on security." LMFAO.

Yes and I'm sure you're a multimillionaire posting on a Mac forum from your yacht...

Geez, the map app isn't that bad and there are other choices out there, how many haters (trolls) visit these forums anyway?

My iPhone 5 is awesome and I also love my Android devices, I'm so pleased with my toys, good thing I don't go through life like some people, full of anger and sadness... over a phone.
