Really? I actually miss street view a ton, but if I had to choose, I would choose turn by turn.

STREET VIEW = ENTERTAINMENT

TURN-BY-TURN = UTILITY

I completely disagree. Streetview lets you verify an address then you plot that into TomTom or Navigon for turnbyturn. I would much rather have the old Google Maps app with no turn by turn.

Turn B Turn

Much rather have Turn By Turn and its working great on iOS 6!
I love it!:cool::apple::apple:

In iOS6 - maybe previous , to back space swipe left or right on the display at the top.
I can't remember how many levels of tech support I've been through looking for than answer this problem, without any resolution which is still a problem for someone like me who doesn't trust the swipe movement. But thanks I'll remember this alternative it works in 5.1.1 also

Think for a minute the price points have remained the same for every iPhone, that's a hard task for any company, to try & keep price points the same for this long when you have investors to keep happy and customers!!!

Nope that's because the iPhone was overpriced from the start so its easy to keep the price the same.

Apple is no longer calling Maps:

"the most beautiful, powerful mapping service ever."

http://9to5mac.com/2012/09/29/apple...most-beautiful-powerful-mapping-service-ever/

I'd missed this key development. As Idefix says, following the apology, Apple have now changed the misleading claim on their website from;

"All of which may just make this app the most beautiful, powerful mapping service ever".

To;

"All in a beautiful vector-based interface that scales and zooms with ease".

Parading Ignorance......

Nope that's because the iPhone was overpriced from the start so its easy to keep the price the same.

You are the perfect example of no matter what good Apple does, you are of the mind set to find something wrong with it! I'm sure you've never owned an iPhone and never will! In stead of getting an iPhone to actually have real input from actual use, you will parade your ignorance all over here on MacRumors! I'm not sure why I'm even engaging in this silly Banter!:apple::apple:

I hate to insult someone's intelligence, my intentions are not to but I don't think you are thinking rationally! All one has to do is watch Apple Stock and there sales numbers already!:apple:

I'm proud to say I have Apple Stock and bought at a great time, when I could see where they were going. I also sold some and was able to put a healthy down payment on my new house not to long ago! Apple stock is predicted to continue upward! I don't think that's because they are over priced or selling bad products, it's because they sell great quality products at great prices for what you get needless to say the Customer Service that comes with all apple products!!!:cool::cool::apple::apple::apple:

Now _that_ was one excellent & very relative graphic!

With ScuffGate, battery life issues & more, Apples nail in the coffin was ditching the widely recognized & used by millions... Google Maps.

A major blunder so blatant it's obvious it was done as an F U to Google, offending millions.

Apples arrogance has always been at the center of everything they do, highlighted by the corporate culture & adoring fan base left behind by one of the worlds most narcissistic males.

Going forward with Tim Cook at the helm, a great guy that's highly intelligent, experienced & focused, I have great confidence he will center Apple and stabilize the turmoil caused by the unfinished plans the prior CEO left behind.

This. My friends been using them and am very impressed & jealous.

Apierrec: Used them all weekend long... Still no complaints, but after reading some of the posts from the weekend it seems people that are outside of major metros are having problems. This weekend i drove to a small town in Bumblef***, Pennyslvania, and had zero issues. Used Maps all around the Philadelphia Metro (i live in center City Philadelphia) the entire weekend.... ZERO issues. The only thing i am realizing is that every small business i usually visit is not on their mapping system. So I also found myself tagging them on yelp as well as other places.

My take: Apple maps are awesome.. they will become great!!

Boy you sure hate Steve Jobs, don't you.

I agree 1000 percent, I remember when Google Maps was much worse then Apple Maps is now, it took being in the public's hands to refine it to what it is today and just time, that's what Apple needs to do! Getting it into the public's hands is the beginning of what will make it better as well as the engineers being under lock & key!
Remember not everyone is having a bad experience, I would love to see some stats on how many truly are unhappy & how many are happy? I know I've had nothing less then a stellar experience!:apple::apple::apple::cool:

...v but after reading some of the posts from the weekend it seems people that are outside of major metros are having problems.

I live in rural Nova Scotia, a place I'm sure most urban Americans would regard as the backside of nowhere.
I decided to test Maps by asking for turn by turn directions to a lottery dream home in a brand new subdivision 30 miles away which isn't yet on Google Maps. It got me straight to the front door.
I was very pleasantly surprised.:)

Boy you sure hate Steve Jobs, don't you.
Not really, yet I never hesitate to state my observations and opinions. Good or bad.

I've been a serious Apple user / enthusiast since 1991. In the early days he was a different guy, intelligent, measured, reasonable.

However unlike Steve Wozniak, Jobs changed as Apple grew, in ways that caused him to be quite feared and despised by those who worked "Under Him". His temper tantrums are stuff of legends, yet due to the grip he had on the press, little of it was known outside the walls of Apple.

It's as simple as that. :)

So now Apple not only should make an indestructible phone because we know all other phones are? That's a ****ing joke, I'll bet your the type when your car gets scratched you take it in for warranty with the ignorant look on your face and say "I only rubbed against it with a sharp object" and expect it to be fixed under warranty! What the **** is it with you people, I'm sure you complained about the glass last year! I've had every iPhone model every yr. and in true Apple fashion their quality is far above anyone of the competitors! There's not even a close second! I never broke a back glass and my 11 yr old daughter only did it once and when I went to Apple with the intention to pay for it, they didn't charge me even though it was her falt! Same experience with on of my iPads, I dropped it & broke screen. Went to Apple knowing I would have to pay for it, the gentleman at the Genius Bar told me price $369, I told him to fix it and to my surprise he gave me a brand new iPad in the box not a refurb. and no charge! Not even a refurb. that's service and no company comes close to Apple! The difference is I was willing to pay for my accidents with my hardware!
As for iPhone 5, I've been puting it in & out of my pocket for week now with no wear or scratches. When some cool cases come out I'll get one because I also know they're not indestructible! What phone out there resists scratches or breakage any different? Btw why did they need to change Vibration motor, was there something wrong with it, never heard any complaints regarding that. Keeping costs down in areas that need no improvement makes all the sense in the world to me. Especially when, god forbid Apple raise there price's!!!
Think for a minute the price points have remained the same for every iPhone, that's a hard task for any company, to try & keep price points the same for this long when you have investors to keep happy and customers!!!
I'm sure the people who said they opened there phones with flaws will get another one with out any problem! One of my new iPhone's had a bad SIM card, OMG Apple dropped the ball on me, they didn't check the SIM, Oh ya that's AT&T. But I'm sure you would think Apple & Tim Cook should have known about this or is it there falt?

Bill Maher made a comment about a politician, woods and bear. Drawing analogy, using Apple products doesn't make one a Technology or Consumer Electronics expert. There are lot of folks here think they are. Problem is when analyzing a complex problem like Maps/Navi App, it is very difficult to explain to folks pretending to be experts.

You are loyal to Apple because you own stock or Genius exchanged your broken devices time and again.

I bought every iPhone Apple ever released on day one. The only phone I had problem was a 3G, that also with call voice quality, which was exchanged thru advance exchange. My first iPhone is still in use by one of my relatives. I sold my last iPhone 4s Black for $375. It was in mint condition after 12 months of use.

There is absolutely no reason to go with aluminum other than to cheap out. Same goes for vibrator motor, same goes for Apple Maps. It costs only $190 for materials and $8 for labor.

There are aircraft, luxury sport cars made of aluminum. We don't see paint peeling off of planes and cars even with the extreme conditions they go through.

Again, this thread is about Tim's apology about Maps.

Cliffs notes: Our maps suck, use a competitor's product.

At least they dropped google. Yes their maps are better, but they started out from nothing as well. Google was unwilling to make compromises with apple, thus we would have been stuck with the subpar navigation that we had compared to androids nav app. Its never good to be at the mercy of your competitor. Now they can move on from google and create an experience for apple users that they enjoy and get use out of. Also competition creates better products, what better than the two biggest smartphone companies competing to make the best product. Thats what America is about.

----------

Those who wanted voice navigation used free/paid apps. There is no evidence there was a huge outcry from users for this functionality. This was just another missing feature like NFC, removable storage, removable battery... (list goes on) people lived without.

In reality one cannot depend on navigation without local map store on the device. Loss of data connection when you desperately need direction is not a good thing. For same reason I have TomTom. I use Google Maps for search and use the address in TomTom.

It is disingenuous for Apple to say they wanted to bring voice navigation and 3D maps to iOS and loose integrated search functionality.

That wasnt the problem. the problem was they were being tied down by their main competitor, google. Google was obviously creating an inferior app for apple to use compared to the one they were producing for android. Yes i have owned an android and thats one thing i really enjoyed on it. Apple was sick of being at the mercy of google for their maps app and so they made their own. It will get better with time. You have to start somewhere, google did as well.

I grew up in the collision business and restoration of all types of metal, and you are absolutely way out of your league to even say something so stupid that plastic is more money and that you don't see paint peeling on cars with aluminum or metal! In fact plastic is the worst to keep paint on, second you only find aluminum on the most expensive automobiles. Our collision shop has to have a special clean room for the aluminum cars. As far as the anodized aluminum verses paint your statement could not be more inaccurate! Anodizing aluminum adheres 10 times better then paint. Maybe your thinking of powder coating? Completely different process but they don't powder coat the outside of cars and powder coating chip in big chunks off of auliminum!
Again I have been taking my iPhone 5 in & out of my pocket for a week now and my 12 yr old daughter has put hers in & out of her school back pack, no damage to ours. Machined aluminum, magnesium or stainless steel is the most precise and high tech way to make a product like apples products! To make them out of plastic as you say is the better way would lower Apples quality to that of all the other cheap **** phones we see out there!
I'm a Apple fan that's for sure, because they make the most highly precision products, its like a Honda compared to a Bentley or Maybach! Honda being a great quality car but no comparison to the precise high quality of a Bentley!
How much plastic would you find on a Bentley vs aluminum or a power window motor that works outstanding from last years model? should they change that motor just to change it to do the same function no worse or better and it saves costs? No, Change it when there is better or the one that exists is now out dated.
In the Automotive world we see carry over parts in some of the most Elegant vehicles made, that's good business to keep prices reasonable even on the high end cars. How long does a auto manufacture keep the same body style?
Sometimes for years and just refine it!
Sounds to me like you are an Apple fan but have now become one of the people who look for something to complain about, so maybe you can get another free case or bumper? Most people use a case anyway, I prefer not to and I'm sure my phone will be in great shape when I sell it next for the next update!

Yes, this thread was about the letter from Tim Cook that I felt was a nice thing to do being how in the past they were always criticized for not responding to problems! Tim is doing what the people wanted, or should he hold a press conference and cut a limb off on stage to make the little baby's happy! I've said this so many times "Apple is Dammed if they do and Dammed if they don't"!
Once again I'll use this from last year "if you don't like it, don't buy it"!
Don't complain that it's this or it's that, take your entitlement cry baby butts back to Apple and return it! then go buy a plastic piece of **** from one of the Android crowd! Then you can start your own Rumor Sight to snivel on or phrase you new Galaxy S3 or the Phablet Note and with the not you won't have to worry about scratches putting it in your pocket because it will not fit!

You're showing a bit of bias here. Let me work on that for you ;)

Google and Apple were unable to reach an agreement. It's not that Apple was unwilling to compromise or, as you stated, Google was unwilling. Both parties were unable.

Further - Google wasn't obviously creating an inferior app for any reason other than Apple's agreement with Google did not include the functionality Google had added to maps. Additionally - I believe I read that Apple's team actually created the App. Yes - Google's data, but it wasn't Google's "App"

The long/short of it is - Apple and Google signed an agreement 5 years ago. That agreement didn't include any/all updates that Google has since introduced. When both parties sat back down to negotiate - neither one would concede so Apple went its own way.

I am a Apple fan and will remain one as long as they make good products. Jobs didn't run Apple like any other American Inc., thats what made it unique. Cook seems to be trying run like any other company. I was responding to someone else comment and you jumped on with colorful language.

Maps is a bigger issue than most non-Information Technology folks can understand. Jobs in one of the interviews clearly mentioned they are not into maps and search business.

All major technology players deal with each other and play nicely for most part. Because they get revenue for their technology running on competitor's products. For Apple to say Google didn't provide Voce Navigation is disingenuous. One of the reports suggest iOS is getting old and they want to get into App market. Maps is Apple's way of testing waters.

It is going to be slippery slope if Cook lacks negotiation skills to deal with counterparts. He should know Apple's limitations and pick battles carefully. Here are few examples about cooperation among major players.

1) Today Oracle signed an agreement with Nokia for location based services.
2) Nokia paid $8.1 Billion for NAVTEQ which provides navigation software used in most vehicles.
3) Asus designed Nexus 7 for Google even though Asus has a competing product.

Oh, BTW I bought two Speck Candyshell cases for my IP5s. You can see pictures on iPhone Accessory forum.

I'll tone it down

You, nor I were in any of the negotiations to have a say on what & why Google Maps had to go? It was ok for Google to enter into the smartphone business & release junk? But not ok for Apple to give Maps a try, I guess what saddens me is a awesome hardware product is released (iPhone 5) and all people can do is complain about an App? Google new what was going on but did nothing to release an App.or try & make available Google Maps in the App store? They're playing Tit for Tat same as Apple! I've read Steve Jobs book (one of the best books I have ever read) and he give a little of his feelings that had you or I been in his shoes might feel the same. He helped Google when they needed it,as a friend and like Microsoft he was stolen from again!
I don't care about somebody getting into the same business, competition is needed to advance. What I don't like is people that "piss down your back and tell you its raining" and that's what Google did to S.J.

I still feel Apple will get maps up to par, I just can't understand why people are so unwilling to let them work out the bugs. What is Tim Cook done so bad as CEO, nobody has given a good reason as to what hes doing so bad. He's never going to be SJ, he's once in a life time!
I'm not sure why you told me about what kind of cases you got, but those are nice cases.
:cool::apple::apple::apple:

I just want them to fix my street and make usable in New York.

But if that's a weird case, then just carry on.

I believe that was a comment directed to KnightWRX, and not the world at large. At least that was my intent.

Good luck with your Maps issues.

Has anyone making this suggestion actually tried this? It's just about OK if you're standing still, but several seconds between updates, the current position disappearing off the edge of the screen, and no compass kinda make navigating difficult!

* I didn't update, so don't have to do any of this, thankfully!

Of course, the problem with the old maps is not just that they didn't do turn-by-turn, but that the screen couldn't (according to Google's ToS) even update the screen once you past a waypoint. I'm sure maps.google.com is no better but it's what Google is willing to provide.

Google maps had barely any local businesses until Apple allowed them on to the iPhone. Used them again last night - 30 miledrive from Center City Philadelphia to a Chuck E Cheeze North/Northwest of the city. The turn by turn GPS is amazing. Sooo much better than any GPS. Siri is really great at re-directing routes. Really good at identifying traffic. Im a big fan.... This cloud based mapping system is already better then ANY gps i've ever used (GPS's are trash).

That's awesome! Again, i'm not having any issues and cant seem to figure out what kind of problems are really affecting people. Flyover is more of a gimmick on both Apple and Google maps today. How many people need to see perfect landscape images of a major city??
