It has far more in common with the 6S than the Air or 5S. It is not literally an Air with Touch ID new chip. It would be far more accurate to say it's a 6S in a new enclosure, which isn't quite right either.

The most important parts of any computer are the CPU, GPU and RAM. All of which the 2017 iPad shares in common with the 6S and not the Air, 6 or 5S.

It's an iPad Air, updated to include the a9 SoC (which includes RAM on the package) Touch ID, and new wi-fi radio. It's performance characteristics, as you state, and as I originally implied, are similar to other devices using the a9, sure. But no, it's not fair to say it has more in common with a 6s, because it doesn't, it has more in common with the Air and performance slightly better than an Air 2, considering you're really going to be doing different things on iPad and iPhone, and the chip is powering considerably different hardware.

My comments regarding the 5s and 6 were aimed at the iPhone SE, which does use a variety of components from across those devices, plus some from the 6s too.

Price gouging? Every business will try to charge the highest price possible that their customers are willing to pay.
And gouging will only work if your consumers don't have alternatives. Guess what, there are plenty of cheaper phones and computers out there. People can buy those instead of Apple's.

Maybe you should try starting a business, and see if you can survive without your definition of "gouging."

The entitlement attitude of people these days is extremely irritating.

Can someone tape Tim's mouth shut? This PR spree he's been on lately isn't helping anyone. I recall a time when Apple would only make statements when they took out ads or had a conference.

Apple products are for rich people in rich countries or for a few enthusiasts that would rather get them rather than pay for more important needs.

That is like saying the Apple Watch Edition isn't priced for the rich...

I love Apple products; have for decades. I've lost count of how many Apple products I bought over the decades, despite the budgeting I had to do. However, Tim is clearly out of touch with reality if he is claiming they price them for everyone. Maybe if he meant second hand, 5 years later after release, sure.

“But if you look across our product lines, you can buy an iPad today for under $300”

^ is that even true? The 2017 iPad starts at $329, then $399 for mini 4, then $649+ for the Pro...

What is he talking about?

Oh second craigslist iPads, right.

I think he was thinking iPad 2017 was 299, and by undercutting that extra dollar, he can make that misleading marketing claim

He should lower iPad 2017 to 299 on principle, after that :D

Cook is right, poor people get to experience Apple products as well since Apple's furious pace of planned obsolescence allows poor countries to receive a prodigious supply of older Apple products to add to their toxic waste sites.

Exactly. This mythical $300 iPad he talks is probably a fine device, but it’s not a smart long term deal.

That further proves that Tim Cook is out of touch with the average house hold when he's making a product that people shouldn't technically be buying due to it ballooning their expenses. This chart also does prove, that while everyone CAN buy an iPhone, only the high incomes, high education are buying them at the highest rates.

And yet the iPhone is one of the best selling phones across the entire smartphone market, not just the premium space.

Well, no, that's not true and it's easy to verify.

It's significantly faster than the iPad 2, about 1.5x, in all but multi-core geekbench (no surprise, given the core count) where it draws level.
Better battery life too.

http://www.macworld.co.uk/review/ipad/new-ipad-2017-review-3656385/

Compare Geekbench to MacWorld's own 6s review and you'll see they're pretty much within margin of error, or at least near as doesn't matter. I even used the figures from the 6s+ to make it a fairer fight.

http://www.macworld.co.uk/review/ip...y-uk-geekbench-benchmark-audio-cheap-3623611/

Geekbench

iPad Air 2: 1823
iPad 2017 Single Core: 2359
iPhone 6s Plus Single Core: 2527

iPad Air 2: 4343
iPad 2017 Multi Core: 4340
iPhone 6s Plus Multi Core: 4407

Same story in graphics performance, all sourced from the above URLs. In fact, here the iPad 2017 pretty much destroys the Air 2 and beats the 6s handily too in the T-Rex test, though can't keep pace in Manhattan.

GFXBench Metal T-Rex Onscreen
Pad Air 2: 41.6 fps
iPad 2017: 56.1 fps
iPhone 6s Plus: 38 fps

GFXBench Metal Manhattan Onscreen

Pad Air 2: 29.3 fps
iPad 2017 Single Core: 28.6 fps
iPhone 6s Plus Single Core: 37 fps

Odd to make such a specific claim that's so easily refuted.

I'd say it's fair to say it has more in common with a 6s.

Why does Apple always make stupid statements like this when their ridiculous prices are questioned? Phil responded with something along the lines of we're paying for the experience, not the product. Whatever that means.

Because apparently they can and that's how they roll. Of course, someday even their loyalists will start to laugh and call them out for being hypocrites in that respect, at least that's the hope.

This is a perfect example of how wealthy individuals are out of touch with us regular peasants. Maybe a $1000+ is affordable in his world but that's rent money for a lot of folks.

Apple products aren't necessarily for rich people. But you have to have a pretty decent income to afford apple products.

This is the same company that sells a macbook charger for $70 and then charges an additional $20 for the usb-c cable.

Don't even get me started on the 2017 macbook pricing.

Next day: announces $1000+ smartphone

What a perfectly put and beautiful reply... I love this...

The hypocrisy is bleeding everywhere... Apple has lost perspective as it has the Elite running a company for the rich and famous, they look down on people who are not rich, those they call Employees at Apple Retail...

My Reply to Tim Cook is simple... "PROVE IT!"

Apple products are for the rich, i you can afford one you are in the top 1% of the worlds earners... you may not be the 1% of the 1%, you may not drive a lambo but you are really ****ing rich. So Tim Cook get off your high horse

Don't hold your breath on that. The ONLY way folks are going to truly call them out, and by that I mean talk with wallets and not mouths, is if instant financing goes away. Very few consumers actually think about the price of the thing they are buying. It's always $XX/ month. Neither the banks nor the Corporations will ever let that happen. They will let you finance that iPhone for 30 years before they make folks pay for it out right.

Correction, Apple "changed" the world, they no longer are doing so. Samsung is changing the world now, first they brought us phablet phones and everyone laughed at them but then Apple copied, and then they pushed stuff like OLED, inductive charging, waterproofing, etc all of which Apple is adopting years later.

He can say whatever he wants. But with iMac at 25 THOUSAND BRL and iphones at 3500 BRL... He can suck my boloney too! Apple is full of it..

You have to admit the iPhone X is sort of taking the iPhone 7 and just applying some Samsung technology and features to it.

Considering that IBM switched their employee's computer lineup to Macs because it was cheaper in the long run, I can't fault Cook for saying this.

The switch isn’t mandatory for IBM employees. They are usually given a choice between a Lenovo or Apple system. Sometimes, that choice is made by a certain management level for the employees below them.

You know what. I think we're looking at this from the wrong side. Maybe he's not talking about the line up today, but Tomorrow the pricing could change completely.

Could be that he slipped and there will be a price cut to < $300 tomorrow on the Ipad.

And perhaps we've all be hoodwinked in believing in a $1000 iPhone, and we see a realistic price band.
